- I went to my Bible (NIV) and read 2 Samuel 11, where David supposedly saw Bathsheba bathing on her roof, but when I actually read it, the bible makes it clear that David was the one on the roof, and from that roof, the roof of the palace, he saw Bathsheba bathing. Curious, I looked at every other translation online and in all of them, David is clearly the one in the wrong and looking where he wasn't supposed to be. But in all the lessons I have heard and specifically the song Hallelujah, Bathsheba is the one on the roof and seducing David.
This is simply not the case, not in scripture. Scripture actually makes it clear that Bathsheba wasn't in the wrong at all, saying the thing David had done displeased the Lord and comparing her to an ewe lamb (which in scriptures always means spotless and blameless), so I decided to correct this wrong teaching with my version of Hallelujah. I hope you like it!
I really hope you enjoyed it, I feel this version more accurately represents the story of David and Bathsheba and her experience and feelings, as well as the feelings of those who may have been hurt by clergy and church people. If you want to hear a healthy interpretation of the story, and the only one I have heard so far to preach it in a healthy way, check out Restore Austin: David and Bathsheba.
Lyrics:
Now I’ve heard there was a secret chord
That David played and it pleased the lord
But you don’t really care for music,
Do you?
Well it goes like this the fourth the fifth
The minor falls and the major lifts
The baffled king composing, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Halleluuuuuujah
Your faith was strong but you needed proof
You saw her bathing from your roof
Her beauty and the moonlight overthrew you
You had her in your big strong hands
You drug her there, And you killed her man
And from her lips you drew the Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Halleluuuuujah
I know that there’s a God above
But all I’ve ever learned from love
Was how to shoot somebody who outdrew you
There’s a blaze of light in every word
It doesn’t matter what you heard
The holy or the broken Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Halleluuuuujah
I did my best it wasn’t much
I couldn’t feel so I tried to touch
I told the truth I didn’t come to fool you
And even though it all went wrong
I’ll stand before the Lord of song
With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah
Hallelujah, Hallelujah
Haaaalelujah, Halleluuuuujah
