- In this video I am photographing birds in flight. The common tern are really cool looking birds. Its also a great bird to practice flight shots. Hopefully you pick up some tips and trick as well. My goal was to catch them with fish in their beak.

One of the best RUclipsrs out there. Always excellent photos. Thank you for all of the effort you put into your videos.
wow....makes me really humble and happy to read your awesome compliment. Thank you so much for the support!
Trond, I want to thank you so very much for this and for all your videos. Not just because they are really informative and helpful to me as a photographer, but more importantly because of your genuine passion for and appreciation of birds, animals and the environment. Your kindness and obviously very deep respect towards nature is something that's very reassuring for me to see and it gives me a lot of hope. For lots of reasons it's been a tough couple of years and your videos always make the day feel a lot brighter. Thank you, brother.
Dan Richardson Wow....what a great compliment. Thank you so much 🙏
Your enthusiasm is infectious Trond. Great photos as always.

Thank you so much for your kind words :)
Your joy is wonderful and always gives me new courage to go with my 500mm in the nature fore Wildlife photos. Thank you.
Thanks a lot Clive! Wish your photography the best.
Nice shots I love it
Hey. Your photos are amazing. Thanks for sharing them ..... 📸🤗
I'm glad you were sheltered by a tree, haha! Amazing work, shooting handheld! I love the freedom of shooting handheld, it isn't easy for sure, and I can only imagine the challenge with a lens as big as yours. Beautiful photos as always, Trond!
Haha...yes indeed it was :) Thank you so much Liesl for your kind words.
Lovely shots Trond. I also use back button focus and am really pleased to have made the change. It takes a little while to get accustomed but worth it. I use the 300mm PF lens with 1.4 TC , and this gets close. I had the same thought as you about actually getting a fishing shot, but haven’t been able to do that - yet! Love your videos keep them coming.
Thank you so much John! Keep shooting! :)
Love your videos and to see your excitement in your face. Also enjoy the tips I learn from you.
Wow. Fantastic shots. What an amazing location.
Beautiful and inspiring shots as always, great video!

What a neat place, great job Trond. I also appreciate your commentary.
Beautiful shots once again Trond keep up the great work.
Thanks a lot Kevin, for always supporting me. Really appreciate it
I love photograp bro❤️❤️❤️
So great!!
Hi Trond, ya, really really cool is right. “Your Work has reached a point, where it speaks for itself” You have grown within yourself, and it flows out in your work. “Well done my friend, well done”
Thank you so much Kim! Its so encouraging to read your compliment. :)
Really nice
Knowing how difficult it is to get good BIF shots, you have really stepped it up with these images. Beautiful work. You might consider trying full manual with auto ISO...takes some practice but the added control with both shutter speed and aperture while the camera floats ISO can be invaluable in obtaining more images. Great video and thanks.
This is how I shoot about everything unless I have plenty of light and I'm just in aperture priority with high enough ISO. I love manual + auto ISO + exposure compensation.
Fantastic video. Your Photographs are Beautiful. Thank you for sharing. As a newbie to wildlife photography I'm learning so much from you approach to photography. Big Thanks.
Beautiful shots and I always love your enthusiasm Trond.
Thank you so much!
i photographed them many times when there hovering in mid air its not easy but its worth it !!! by the way i love your videos n photographs it reminds me of myself n how much i love it !!!!!!!!
Its not easy, but really fun. Thank you so much for the compliment.
Trond, what great shots of the Terns nesting area, especially with the combination of the daisies and rocks! I was shooting Terns a few weeks ago fishing along the shoreline. Very difficult to capture these small fast birds doing that.
always great images my friend. great content
quality work and images Trond thank you mate just love it
Thank you so much!
Thanks for sharing Trond. Amazing shots, as always. 👍
Thank you so much John! :)
Godd job on working that heavy lens mate! That image at 8:56 is fantastic. Bra jobba. Always good images in your videos :)
Thank you so much Oddbjørn :)
Amazing images. The D500 is still such a powerful camera with this mighty AF! Very good video once again!
Wooow really fantastic bird freezing shot.. Nature all was beautiful, and u show beauty next level.. U choose awasome place to shoot
Thank you so much Vijay! :)
Another awesome video. I’ve been practising my birds in flight shots more lately, so thanks for the useful tips! 👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent images Trond, I have been handholding my 500mm f4 this week for BIF and haven’t had the successes that you achieved. Guess I need to keep practicing! Great videos and enjoy your passion for wildlife.
Thank you so much Simon! Wish your photography the best. Keep shooting :)
Dope! 🔥
Beautiful shots!
Thank you so much!
Thanks for this interesting video!
Great selection of Photos Trond 👍🏻
Thank you so much Mike!
hey trond, have u got a tip for shooting with a 300mm lens. Often it is very hard to get close enough for a nice picture.
Love to watch your videos. Keep on going. Great pictures
Beautiful work!!👍👍👍
Great video Trond,i learn a lot from your videos...Thank you
Thank you so much Simon. Thats really awesome compliment. I am so glad you find my videos educationally :)
@@trondwestby5264 Many thanks for replying back,i have recently started bird photography and struggle with camera settings,if you ever do a video for beginners and want company please let me know....Many Thanks
I use the 70-200 IS on the 7DII, but I’ve yet to get a shot Im even half pleased with. With my disabilities I can’t get to the good places to shoot them in the UK without going on a boat trip. Which then makes it twice as hard.
You got some truly amazing shots there Trond, they all had the 'Wow!' Factor plus more,
Another wonderful video, I enjoy seeing your passion as much as I do the birds.
Its much harder from boat. So true. Thank you so much for your encouraging comment. I feel so lucky when reading it. Thank you so so much for your kind support.
Beautiful images mate!! I'm off to the Danish coast in 2 weeks, will definitely be doing some water fowl images!!
Thank you so much! Best of luck to you in Denmark. :)
Beautiful mate 👍
Vanvittig flotte bilder, mildt sagt! Dette kan du :)
Tusen takk :)
Hi Trond what another brilliant video and wow your images are amazing boy do I have a lot to learn.Until next time take care my friend.
Thank you so much Clive! I really appreciate your support!
Great video as always Trond. Thank you!
Thanks a lot for the kind comment!
Super photos. 👍
Thank you so much!
I've always wanted to do stuff like that! I'm to young though and that camera and the lenses are to expensive for me 😞 Keep up the great work👍👏😎
As always, so engaging and some beatiful images - you're a such an inspiring photographer with great tuition skills. I have 3 questions, which hopefully you can answer/ provide your views on. 1) what aperatures were you using on these shots, do you tend to shoot shutter priority or aperature priority? 2) just out of interest what was your hit rate, by that I mean how long where you shooting for, how many shots did you take altogether and how many what you say pass the Trond criteria? 3) I know its not your usual style but would you consider doing a post processing video? Thanks and friendly greetings for the UK! Martin
Thank you so much Martin for your very kind words. I always use f4...or full opening depending on the lense. I shoot in aperture priority. 99,9% of the times :) . I took around 1000 images that evening. And I guess around 10 of them where useable. But only 4-5 of them I really liked. The one I liked the most I just posted on instagram . I will consider doing a processing video about birds :) Hope this answered your questions? Wish you all the best. And I thank you so much for your support!
Trond Westby thank you for the detailed response, and thank you producing such beautiful content!
Another cracking set of images Trond. I have to say I would struggle shooting a 500 hand held. I use a tripod with a good video head for birds in flight.
Thank you so much Robert! Its probably the best, to use a tripod :)
Świetny materiał wideo oraz kapitalne ujęcia ! :) Czekam na kolejne filmy ! Greetings from Poland Trond ! :)
Dziękuję bardzo za miły komplement.
Mal wieder Top VideoTrond
Very nice shots with very colorful background. Good point about not needing high speed when they are hovering. I used a Canon 100-500mm at very high shutter speed (2000-3200), but I was never able to get sharp wings. Very blurry wings. Maybe I'm close to the subject and my F-stop is not big enough. I used wide open at 7.1. What shutter speed do you use?
Thanks for a great video, fantastic photos and the very good info how to take birds in flight it was something I could use.
Do you never use a battery grip ? And if not why ?
Thank you so much Per! I used it on my D7100. But it was so expensive to the D500. But would be great to have.
Really loved it.. Keep going
Thank you so much!
Very nice photos of the terns in flight. I loved it when they had the fish in their mouth. I have a question, do you have to crop the photos or are they pretty much full frame as you take them?
Thank you so much for the compliment. I do crop a little bit. Its really hard to take flight shots in perfect frame out of camera. But I dont like to crop too much.
Great video Trond. Which settings do you use when photographing flying birds?
I am using aperture priority mode, f4 and change my iso according to the shutterspeed and light :)
Enjoyed your images. Are you shooting Manual with Auto ISO?
Extraordinary, I went out this morning to shoot Common Tern, and come home and find your video with you shooting Common Tern! 😂. Would like to know what you think of my shots 😎. Your shots are great with the foreground plants 👍👍👍
Thats cool Paul! Would love to see your shots! Thank you so much for your kind words!
Hi Trond, another great video, Thank you. I have a question, at 6:30 you talk about over exposing a little to avoid the bird being rendered dark, What metering mode are you using to determine the base line exposure please?
Thank you so much! I metering the whole image. That is what I am used to, and know how my camera react in different lighting.
you should be coming to saudi arabia for take some pictures for birds 😍 your welcome
Thanks a lot :)
Great info & images again Trond. I program a function button on my D500 & D5 to switch from focus group area for birds flying from side to side & a single point when they fly towards me. The only drawback is having to keep the button pressed to maintain single point.
Also, can I ask what job you do & have you considered turning your photography & RUclips channel into a full time career? Great work!
Thank you so much Andy for your compliment. I am a leader of computer sales in a electro shop. I hope to go more and more full time in the future :)
You would love the Nikon 500 f5.6 PF lens with the D500.....perfect for BIF...
I believe so too :)
I have had one on order for more than 12 months. They are still unavailable in Australia. Have to make do with the 300 f4 PF at present.
Just earned a subscriber, lovely video! By the way, would any of the lighter lenses help with getting flight shots, like the 200-500 or 500 PF? I would imagine the lighter weight might make it possible to hold the lens longer than a heavy prime!
Thank you so much! Welcome on board! It will definitely make it easier with a lighter lense :)
Great video Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Another quality video Trond! Great images🇬🇧🇨🇦🇬🇧
Thank you so much for your kind compliment.
Eyy, ny Westby video er beste ny video ^^
Tusen takk Johnny :)
Very good Trond. Have you tried manual settings on the D500 with auto ISO?
Thanks a lot! Yes I have. For me I dont feel comfortable using auto ISO. :)
Great video! Is there a mix of Arctic terns and commons in there? Some seem to be Arctic.
Thank you so much! You might be right. :)
They all basically look the same😂
Tusen takk for hyggelige ord. Det er bare å spørre, om det er noe jeg kan bidra med :)
Trond this video was one of my favorites, I loved how you explained your settings and I really liked the things you said about the lens. You actually answered a lot of questions for me. I’m thinking about going to an Alaska workshop to photograph birds. I’m shooting with a Nikon D850 with a Nikon 200-500mm f5.6 lens. I also own a Nikon 600mm but that lens is extremely heavy for me and I like to hand hold. I was thinking about renting the 500mm but it sounds like that too would be too heavy. I ordered the 500mm F5.6 the one that weighs about 3 lbs, but it is still backordered I ordered it in March. If you have any recommendations regarding a good lens to use for wildlife photography I would appreciate that very much. Thank you
P.s. your photos were beautiful.
I do a little of wild life I have a Nikon D 7000 with the 70 -300mm but i do want a 600mm but to .much money.
Flotte bilder av ternene. Hvor har du fotografert hen ? Har selv tatt en rekke ternebilder nær Lyngør:)
Tusen takk! Stavanger.
I have been inspired so much. Im a nikon user too. I intend to buy a combo of nikon d500 and 300 2.8. Is that a good one for wildlife photography? Thank you sir!
Thank you so much! I am so glad that you find my work inspiring. The combo with the D500 and the 300 2.8 is a really good combo. Wich I used myself for a long time. Together with a 1,4 converter.
@@trondwestby5264 thank you for your kind reply. Ill keep following you and your amazing wildlife photography. Best wish to you!
Do you shoot the pictures in JPEG or in RAW? Your burst is very fast.
Marcus Herbst D500 shoots at 10fps in high setting....
I use RAW together with a XQD card its no problem with 10 fps for many shots.
Hi Trond How do you get the eye sharp when photographing Terns as they are black and white. It is difficult to get the catch eye. Is it the time of day or is it compensation button.
Great video Trond! Aren’t tou using a gimbalhead for BIF?
Thank you so much Marc! I dont have a gimble. But hope to get one, one day :)
How do you meter for the flight shots when using full manual?
The whole image
@@trondwestby5264 Thanks, it's just that i am working in full manual and if the sky is brigh or darkt and I have just been shooting in the shade when i go to take a bird flying i get blinkies all over the place and the subject is over/under exposed
What kind of hit rate do you get with BIF images ????
I might be a noob, but you need to help me out on the short term, BIF? 😂
Trond Westby
Sorry for the abbreviation BIF, i assumed wrongly that you may have known this despite English not being your first language, my apologies, BIF is simply Birds in Flight. Really enjoy your work and thanks for sharing, look forward to the next one 👍
I need your website.
Well, duh! Why aren’t you using a gimbal with tripod? You already have an easy job, because the birds are all right in front of your nose, dude. Maybe try to get birds that are super shy and you really find out what it takes to be a great photographer. You are NOT! You are just sitting there and have the birds come to you.
