One of my favorite PG songs. The depths that he is willing go to is what makes him so great. Not many artists are willing to go that deep. This one causes a swell of emotion inside.
killer song, with some of his best lyrics, like in PG 3. a prove of how Peter Gabriel is a musician without limits, always with something to surprise you, like some of his contemporaries, David Bowie or John Cale.
I saw this tour live at Wembley Arena, was simply amazing, if you have any chance of seeing him, no matter how much it is, pay it, it's totally worth it! :-D
The lyrics and the sound describes perfectly the trauma and abuse I suffered in my childhood and my escape from it. Yeah, you can move on but you never forget....no matter how old you are.
If there was ever a theme song for my first 48 years, this would be it. Thank you Mr. Gabriel. Thank you for bringing me full circle. It now feels like our monster can't hurt either one of us anymore.
This song sends shivers up my spine! My dad used to play Gabriel era Genesis albums when I was a baby. I think Ive been listening to Peter Gabriel since I was in the womb. He still sounds great and always doing something new.
Best wishes dearest Colleague and Friend. Your work is so intricate. In Truth. In Light. In Sound. In Merit. In Attention. Mother Earth Blesses a True Child of Deity. On this Rock and Solid State Foundation shall your wisdom nurture Eternal Peace to Humanity.
PG says this song is about fear. I wonder if he truly knows the depths of it. For his sake, I hope not. He sings of 'flashbacks every night' and 'don't tell me everything's alright'. He sings of the Monster curled up on the floor just like a baby boy in the house deep in the woods. He sings of how he cries until he laughs...a testament to the absurdity of it all. Does he truly know the cowardice of 'Monsters'? I think so, because only someone who understands this truth can come to see the unmitigated absurdity of it. This is by far my favorite Peter Gabriel song of them all, because I listen to it every time I find myself enduring the flashbacks when everything is not alright and need to hear the truth behind the words "I own my fears but they do not own me".
Kind of reminded me of Nine Inch Nails only more artistic. I like how he goes from chaos to peace. That's what's it's like climbing out of the deepest pit of darkness, where you have no friends or family, even your own name seems strange, an illusion. And as you force your way to the light the darkness softly calls, " Why has thou forsaken me?". I think the poet D.H Lawerence describes this process beautifully in his poem, "The Ship Of Death".
There is that whole Nine Inch Nails type thing in this and a handful of tracks that he ever released, perfect as I'm a fan of both, and true that he can turn dark into great just like that.
Saw him in 1989 at the Amnesty Human Rights concert in Delhi. There was Tracy Chapman, Bruce Springsteen, Sting, Yousuf NDour, Zakir Hussain.. What a night!!!
RelliKtm - I have to agree.. We decided (me and my father) to go to Berlin last week to O2arena... Before the concert we were quite upset about the price and travelling costs bu it was worth it....
absolute agree with you if he could wrote things like SUPPER'S READY or all of THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY why don't again he can do it he's a GENIUS A MASTER OF THE PROGRESSIVE ROCK
Is he describing the human condition or his own experience? It's dark and still radiant. Like a private hell but with theme music everyone knows and whistles
when the girl sings into the mic, is that making the really cool sound? (i don't know how to describe it and that's just what it looks like) PS she's so pretty
@swing2727: I guess he's holding back because it's being filmed. He may be letting the pressure of getting everything right get to him? I don't know where abouts in the setlist this was, but he may have been conserving his energy to last the 2 and 1/4 hour show...
actually yes i know that he wrote the lyrics and in the SUPPER'S READY he wrote all the song who was based on a extra normal expirence that he was with jill obviulsly i know that the work of the band was amazing with the music but hackkett was so mainspraceful
It may be that they're running her voice through some effects. It could also be that she's just yelling on top of the synth sound. She is awful pretty...she's Peter's daughter.
It took so long for this album to come out that not alot of people showed up, the place is quit empty, and he was 53years old here, he went for italian suits in his 40's to budda wair and looking like he's pushing 60.Know a days he looks like he's pushing 80, fuck i thought people how eat only veg and fish should be younger looking or is it because he didn't want women to be attraced to him because of his knew wife of 31years old and not so attractive. I not know ,any ways i hope he doesn't break a hip with his tour with STING THIS SUMMER.
I've followed Peter Gabriel for virtually his entire career. With "Up" he showcases evolving musical sensibilities and expanded themes without losing the verve that originally set him apart from his contemporaries in the late 60s and early 70s. Though greeted lukewarmly by critics when it debuted "Up" may be arguably his best work.
When my da' died, this song made me feel it was okay to hate him and love him.
Thank you Mr.Gabriel.
My dad used to play this song constantly. It always scared the shit out of me. Years later, I can't stop listening to it haha. Haunting and amazing.
It's such a poetic and powerful song. I was stunned when I first heard it and that hard freaking riff in the start.
"And the monster I was so afraid of lies curled up on the floor." Catharsis.
One of my favorite PG songs. The depths that he is willing go to is what makes him so great. Not many artists are willing to go that deep. This one causes a swell of emotion inside.

Hope the great musician Peter Gabriel lives for ever. God Bless Peter Gabriel.
This stuff is soooo amazing only knew of his Hits for the norms but he really is a master

The best song from the UP album. I love it! One of my favorites too.

Achtung, so appreciated baby. Ah ..... Peter sooth that savage beast. I love this !
Truly awesome! Lyrics to live by.
Love how his insanity is so actually sane. He reminds me of Anthony Hopkins and David Bowie. But I'm right there with him heart wise

absolute agree with you if he could wrote things like SUPPER'S READY or all of THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY why don't again he can do it he's a GENIUS A MASTER OF THE PROGRESSIVE ROCK

Is he describing the human condition or his own experience? It's dark and still radiant. Like a private hell but with theme music everyone knows and whistles
its his daughter - Melanie =)

I can't tell you how many times I've thought this same thing.
when the girl sings into the mic, is that making the really cool sound? (i don't know how to describe it and that's just what it looks like)
PS she's so pretty
I love to be on the same side of Darkness, but I don't let it consume me to a comatose state, for more brighter DAYS are yet to come!... o.O
I have my fears- they don't have me
@swing2727: I guess he's holding back because it's being filmed. He may be letting the pressure of getting everything right get to him? I don't know where abouts in the setlist this was, but he may have been conserving his energy to last the 2 and 1/4 hour show...
@whoof1 Such a healing and liberating lyric.
I have my fears...
but they do not have Me
I beleive the backup singer is his daughter Melanie.
Milan - Italy
may 8th, 2003
Satiaraha: Gabriel was absent when the rest of the band wrote the music for all songs but 2 for "The Lamb.." you're only referring to the lyrics.
actually yes i know that he wrote the lyrics and in the SUPPER'S READY he wrote all the song who was based on a extra normal expirence that he was with jill obviulsly i know that the work of the band was amazing with the music but hackkett was so mainspraceful

His daughter looks a lot like Peter Gabriel in that video of The Musical Box for Six Hours Live with Genesis...just saying.
lol!
