I would recommend pasted blocks. You can paste in cornstarch or from crushed gym chalk.

The dye was. But if you know color theory then you can understand why after it’s dried it’s not fully black.
#1- black + white = gray You’d need a TON of dye just for one block and at that point you risk tampering with the chalk texture.
#2- a truly neutral black is difficult to make. Most are blue or green based undertones, which in a bottle is hard to tell. In order to cancel out the undertones you have to get opposing color (color wheel). So blue = orange/yellow and green = red.
