That casing is certainly impacting the tone quite a bit. Great video Bronson.

Yes, I agree, the sound of microphones inside of SM7BS is thinner, definitely. And I love SM57 sound with voice, but I use A81WS, it's much better (in my opinion) than A2WS ;) Thanks for the review!

      Thanks for the comment!
I do agree. I think the A81WS does work better when it comes to plosive rejection! I was being a little shallow because I do think the A2WS does look a little cooler (personal opinion), so I thought it was a good one to pitch for this video since the SM7BS is essentially all about looks. Maybe I should make a short video about those SM57 windscreens!

The big takeaway here is the RE320 sounds pretty darn good on your voice!

I like the SM57 with the Shure windscreen a lot.

I think having the SM58 the way it is, is original since everyone is hyper sensitive about how mics look. Nobody really cares as ong as it sounds good.

did you use the V2 or V1 project files for the 3d print, i cant find the V2 files anywhere but apparently theyre better and more accurate. do you know where to get the V2 btw?

if you know him, could you contact him to upload the new v2 files on his website as i think he forgot

HOW? How is it possible to get a 57 to sound WORSE? lol It didn't muffle it, it made it thinner. Im guessing the position of the mic inside this tube is causing some kind of phase issue with lower frequencies. Does it cover the little mesh thing below the head basket?
Im all for DIY stuff, hell I've 3d printed mic parts and have had varying degrees of failure and success. (lots of fail lol)
Perhaps some modification would yield better results, or maybe using it with a darker mic? Thanks for doing this though, i had downloaded the STL file to try this out... I think i'll save my filament for something else!

I definitely prefer the SM57 with the windscreen, the low end definitely is a bit more pronounced. The SM7BS sounds a little too... sparkly? for my liking at least.

I actually had a section in the video that I decided to cut because it wasn’t a perfect example and it was a little too extreme to compare to the SM7Bs… but I talked about when I would play live in bands, a big no-no was for vocalists to cup The microphone around the grill. It really changes the tone of the mic, obviously. I was trying to emphasize how a change in the shape, and what is around the microphone can change the tone, but I didn’t want people to think that I assumed the SM7BS was as bad as cupping a microphone. However, I definitely agree with you. The slight dip in the low end, from being in this enclosure, definitely emphasizes the high end!

Interesting video. I've thought about turning a sort-of SM7-shaped body to stick a good handheld condenser/pencil mic into before but since I don't use a camera for my videos it doesn't even matter.

Love your take on this and your honesty on this. I came across the same conclusion too. I put his proclaimed setup against a Shure SM7B and they sounded nothing alike. That said, I think his point was that it was to have the aesthetic of the SM7B and I think it's cool that he created a 3D printed frame. But in terms of audio they sound nothing alike. And in the case of the Sm58 as shown in your vid, it sounds worse in the frame because dynamics generally sound better up close. But his video seemed to claim that an Sm58+his 3d printed frame would be the same as an SM7B but they sound nothing alike. Another person, Art Vandeley, also disproved the theory as well. Look -- if it was a simple as buying an Sm58, everyone would just get the Sm58 and the SM7B wouldn't be bought. They are both viable mics. But they sound different. And no frame will change that.

      Thank you! I appreciate it.
You make a lot of good points! I do think that Caleb’s video “$30 DIY SM7B” is misleading… aesthetically it is a cool product like you said, but definitely raises some red flags when it comes to audio.
I’ll have to go check out Art’s video!

I printed the kit with a resin printer with 100% fill and put a Beta 58a inside... It sounds better than the SM7B IMO ! (We compared)
And the Beta 58b is louder, which is easier to use in production without insane boosting

Also, the great improvement to the original SM7B is the damn XLR jack! Shure it looks good on the SM7B, but man is it not practical!

Something that got me curious. Does the a2ws fits the Behringer xm8500 without the metal grill? I'd appreciate it if you could check :D

    • @MisterVaper
      @MisterVaper Год назад

It doesn't, the body has a larger diameter. Tried it myself not too long ago. I use the a2ws on the Behringer SL75C, which I prefer over the xm8500.
