From what I quickly saw on some YT channels, the question being asked is : Did the goverment get some money from these 10 top companies ? And if yes, where did the money go as it doesn't look like Hybe get anything ?
My economics professor used to say "money doesn't disappear, it only changes pockets" ...
Also, I believe such noises around the BTS concert organisation + the VIP not being properly invited and/or didn't attend the concert + the Scout Jamboree fiasco where not good indicators that Koreo would be able to organise the World exposition.

Amidst the Martial Law hearing, a new info came out that actually President Yoon government did allocate a budget for the Concert but somehow the money went elsewhere. So, instead of using the money to pay for the BTS Busan concert, the money was "embezzled".

It was a fairly well buried story in either Korea times, or herald. BTS was volunteered. Big Hit and BTS were totally ripped off. paid for almost the entire thing. They got back by paying for it themselves, BUT changed it to a free concert. Also, The gov. thought they had control of BTS by stalling ruling on BTS military exception. It backfired because BTS members had always said they would go to military, period. 2 days post concert they made announcement, with Jin going first.

I remember back then thinking that yes they were completely using BTS for their own gain. It was frustrating to see as for whatever reason, they didn’t meet the criteria to be exempt from the military after all they’ve done to bring attention to SK but if they need something, they quickly throw BTS in front to promote it.

The thing is BTS never asked for anything regarding military service they always said they'd go when called, RM's words 'Go when called'.
They had planned to go earlier but covid happened. Government officials visited 2 of the bangtan members families to pressure them into not starting their military service so they could do the concert. Yes we knew about that also. Jin had to set back the date he was going to start his military service in order to do the concert he wanted to start his military service before the winter.

  • @charW2013
    @charW2013 18 дней назад +5

Actually, I followed this in 2022. It was ARMYs who found the land was owned by an official who wanted to use the concert to get the land developed by the government for free. They found safety concerns about the grounds itself and transportation concerns. They were ignored until they finally got a newspaper involved. After weeks, it was finally changed to the arena. Also, it was ARMYs who brought out the price gouging, hotels were canceling reservations only to raise prices 3-10 fold. I personally had my $49 a night go up to 249 during the weekend of the concert. Others had there cost go up during the whole week. There were so many issues, they weren’t chosen because the world saw how poorly they worked on this concert venue and organization of everything related to it.
Look at how they embezzled the boy scout jamboree funds and not provide the minimal of comfort for them. They put them in a field without enough toilets, that floods, just a poor location because they spent the money traveling. This is money raised by the boyscouts too!

  • @eileencritchley4630

It was ARMY who visited the orginal site and took photo's and notes and basically did the risk assessment on the site. This is why HYBE moved it to the stadium and had to replaced panels that had come free in a bad storm.

To be fair, there is rule of law in South Korea. But I was shocked to have realised that as late as the 1990s political assassinations were still a thing. It reminds me of how young their democracy is. There is nothing wrong with that. Just look at how corrupt the US is. And they are supposed to be the beacon of democracy. Well. Not anymore. Especially not lately.

I loved watching that concert. I remember being excited to watch their one and only Run BTS performance. But I also felt they were manipulated to do it by dangling enlistment exemption. And then they suggested modified enlistment?! That really got my goat! The government wanted access to BTS members and forced them to perform as they saw fit. Oh hell no! And then the safety issues of the first venue! I mean. Come on! How is it that HYBE cares more about the welfare of the people than the government, whose sole purpose is the welfare of the people? And then throughout this whole concert, I don't remember BTS, not even once, mentioning, nevermind promoting, the Expo bid, which tells me, "Okay, we're done being manipulated!" I hated that they didn't get the exemption, but in retrospect, I'm glad that they didn't. The government can still manipulate them, but at least they have less power over them.
I don't really know why this topic is coming up again. It's interesting revisiting. At the time, it was so complicated. Now it feels cut and dry.

Yes, military service is mandatory for BTS but it is an underlying advantage they now have, as getting 'exemption' is not something that can now be held over them as some sort of bargaining tool. BTS remain in control and I think they learned a lesson from this. Independence is key.
The problem is that the Government had A BUDGET for at least some of the expenses. Hybe did not get this budget. You do not plan to host a world event like a world expo or the Olympics without ring-fencing funds. They just spent the money elsewhere. NOT FAIR ON HYBE/BIG HIT.💜

I agree, BTS remain in control and was smart enough to change a burden (military service) into an opportunity (solo works and individual releases). They managed this supposed to be "hiatus" very well through a thorough advanced planning.

Not only that this means they can squeeze any private companies there. If the ones they squeeze are the chaebols from the 1990s then you can argue that those guys grew so dominant and intertwined with the government due to government’s funding them in the 1990s. So paying for the government when called from time to time is quid pro quo.
But HYBE only exists since December 2020. It is probably the first company of this size that received no such benefits.
Which MAY explain why some elements in the Korean government is so hell bent on showing HYBE who is boss. Who knows. But that’s a different topic.

When the intended venue for the concert was chosen, I wondered how would they be able to hold a concert in such a location that was not ready to receive many, many people. Yoon reminds me of a president Drump wants to be.
Before the jamboree, Yoon wanted BTS to perform at his inauguration, and they turned it down. BTS had schedules or something. BTS bridged a connection with the UN and UNICEF 2017, not the Korean Gov. They were invited as the top youth leaders of South Korea. Specifically RM. Then MOON used BTS campaigns already in play with UN and Samsung year after year to sit there at the UN beside BTS. Yoon, before this was already blocking MOON's every attempt to exempt BTS. I think before MOON left office, BTS may have told him they would serve. Parliament made suggestions of a shorter term after Yoon was in office, but Yoon or Yoon's party shot that down too. Yoon pushed an audit on HYBE as soon as he got into office and it lasted months. They found nothing. After that, Yoon went hopping around to the competition labels and other big corporations to see if they wanted BTS exempted? Why would he need to go there in person that a simple email could not say? Fishy. Fishy. I think something happened here. The criticism from the public is that BTS and HYBE did nothing for the people. HYBE is not the gov. I do not see them saying sh1t about the Big3 owing the country anything. This seemed unreasonable and sabotaging of the good name of BTS. They did not even take gov money even while they were bankrupt. Why does BTS owe anyone anything? I think RM and the guys are doing all these webs of content outside of HYBE because of that criticism. But they were previously shut out and shunned by these same people and channels, hosts, etc. Has it really changed? You could not tell with how much favor MHJ was getting and the criticism HYBE received. No one would stand up for them (in public).

    Me: :Reads title.:
Me: Yes, it did. It tried to give BTS an extremely unsafe, almost inaccessible venue, and when HYBE protested, the government basically flounced, saying 'Fine, find your own venue, and pay for it yourself. But you WILL hold this concert.' And of course, the proposed budget for the original unsafe venue 'disappeared'.
And when HYBE asked recompense for everything they had to spend on the Asiad Main, the government said NO. HYBE spent 7B KW, or $4.75M out of their own pocket for that concert, and never got a bit of it back.
The government even pressured Jimin's father to get his son and the group to agree to it.
Just recently, it was revealed that there WAS military exemption in the works for them, and it was supposed to come before the General Assembly. But the Defense Committee refused to release it so it could be voted on. (Source Reporter Kim, K-Pop Shock, Jan 5: ruclips.net/video/1bfKa1la-RI/видео.html)

28:50. There was controversy here following issuing the photocards for the jamboree. The gov said they would launch an investigation into an oversaturation of photocards. I'm not sure what the stupid complaint was, but this seemed like an angry response from the gov to get back at bys even though they know what the photocards were for. The international people gobbled them up with more interest than the other artists. I Tthink this is also when MHJ was getting in her media campaign groove on. The investigation made no sense. I think another label did do something but they pointed at HYBE to make a media storm.

BTS appears to be an irresistible golden goose to corrupt and stupidly shortsighted SK politicians. Thank goodness that government is being replaced before they succeeded in seriously damaging BTS's reputation and important economic contribution.
Did the Busan, or the national SK government, collect any corporate or other contributions for the BTS concert? Were these funds recorded? And, as HYBE covered the concert's total costs, where did those funds go?

And then bts was made to be some kind of diplomatic ambassadors (temporary), also for optics. They did not benefit from it at all.
If you have noticed, hybe/bts/kpop in general, tries to stay away from politics. But they keep being dragged into it due to them being bts.

They are all so, so incredibly talented; together, and on their own, but, they are also extraordinary human beings. Put that altogether and you get beings who bring nothing but light and joy to the world.
I realize this is a bit off point. But, there is always so much going on around them; much, not good, even while some of them are still in the military, so, I’m also astounded by their strength.

and RM even broke down doing the dinner saying that him and BTS was put in this situation where they represent there whole country, without ever wanting to or felt worthy of. so it was their way of saying we wont bow down to the government we wont let them use us and hoped that army would understand after their annoucement of military enlistment. BTS did announce the enlistment the day after the concert like a F.. you korean goverment but we chose to serve on our own. the talk about excemption was still ongoing at that time. HB, this has been said since BTS was doing things for the Korean government and culture, etc. Most of the time, HYBE was covering all their cost, and the government didn't pay up for anything. especially when some politicians request time and time again for BTS to do things like appearances, etc. Since then, we believe they were forced to do things for the government. Like the president requiring BTS at the last minute to appear with the president. It was not something they wanted, but their government asked the UN. Then the voted to send them to the military despite people wanting BTS to continue since they give so much more than anyone as Korean citizens and money they bring into the GDP. I remember the articles criticizing those politicians that forcibly yanked the arms of RM and V to make it appear the boys supported them/the government during photo ops for the Busan Expo bid. That, together with the issues about funding and organizing the Busan concert, and the politicians baiting BTS with the prospect of an exemption, just gave me the impression that this government was not ok. It just seemed they/the politicians wanted the prestige but were not really capable of hosting such big, worldwide events. When news came out about how badly the World Scout gathering was handled, then that tragedy at Itaewon, I thought, the Busan bid was not going to succeed.
It's infuriating that it was while this administration was in power that all these other horrible things happened, such as the interrogations of Lee Sun Kyun, Suga, and that inquiry on workplace harassment where some politicians were obviously biased toward/against certain parties.
All citizens deserve a decent government. It's surprising that a developed country like SK still had to bear such types of politicians. But I suppose there are horrible politicians wherever you go.
I wonder if a budget had actually been allotted to the Busan concert. Considering the government didn't pay for it, that budget should still be intact and not pocketed by any politician. It's the SK people's money.

It is important to note that it was already decided that they will go to the military without any exemptions by the time Busan free concert was decided. They didn’t do it in the hope of being exempted.

@@HailToTheMeep correct that decision was made way in advance and they ended up having to put it off twice first time due to covid second time due to be 'forced' roped into doing the concert.

I had never heard of the world expo until the Busan concert. I am from the USA and as far to my knowledge, I don’t think we participate in that. Maybe we do and I’m just not heard it. Anyway, even though I don’t know much about it I think if I was on the board of voting the way that Busan treated BTS and Hybe would have kept me from voting for them. They lied about paying for it. They had a venue that wasn’t safe and it wasn’t until army Checked it out and said something that it was changed. They waited until the concert date was announced and everything before they even let anybody know that they weren’t gonna pay for it. All of those things would’ve kept me from voting for them. So Busan cut off the end of their nose to spite their face when they treated BTS like this. Nobody is faulting BTS for this., no it is the government that is at fault for losing the vote

I don’t believe any of them care about the expo. The campaign was just an excuse for them to gain something else. This is why none of the voting members of the expo was invited.

The World Expo, also know as The World Fair has been held many times in the USA. The Unisphere was built for the 1964 fair in New York City. I think the last World Fair was in New Orleans in the 80s. Hope this helps. Enjoy your weekend...💜

Hello! BTS is still going through a huge hate train. Even now, RM cannot post words aor a single picture without receiving hate. The gov just investigated hybe without reason for workplace bullying and overworking employees without evidence or even a complaint in one of those matters. Back to the point where BTS did more for SK than anyone else up for exemption. They deserved it and the people voted for them to be exempted 9 of 10 times. Why didn't Yoon exempt them like he promised? Wasn't it just before that, the Saudi prince showed up. Yoon demanded Bang PD be there at the request of the prince. Yoon received billions in deals to build nuclear power plants for SA, and like 5 billion in promise of additional events. Is the gov making deals that BTS or other artists would entertain for SA and still pocketing the money and leaving the artists to pay the expense? They said Yoon had no intention of doing the expo. Guess who win the bid? SA. SA wealth fund was involved with Kakao to inflate SM stock and stop HYBE acquisition of SM. Do you remember Yoo. Went around to SM, competing labels and other major corporations including Kakao to see their opinion on giving BTS exemption, but to me, Yoon sided with the take down of hybe, or at least some means to take their money. This followed him launching an audit into HYBE right after getting into office that lasted for months.

On the other hand, in Dec 24, the Ministry Of Employment And Labor ruled at least 2 times in Hybe favor : they allow the company to retain its “Top Company” certification, then they concluded that there were no violations of the law from HYBE regarding a employee death, and even more recently they dismissed allegations of workplace harassment against executives of HYBE. So maybe something is changing.
