Oh yea totally relatable here. Because The Room is a much more popular film than The Shawshank redemption. The reason the Crapolyte is getting so much negative publicity is because it’s not a Star Wars TV show. It’s a political agenda masquerading as a Star Wars show. And society is finally waking up to this Woke Mumbo Jumbo and doesn’t want to be force fed shit and being told it’s Caviar.

Not a fan of the critiquing just snippets of a story's whole. Especially if they are saying it is a Rashomon style story. We don't critique books by a chapter and this model only works for RUclips channels but not for fandom. It just stirs up massive amounts of negativity.

I agree I’m waiting for the entire story to be told to give my opinion. I like certain aspects of what we’ve seen and there are other I don’t care for but I can’t say a series is bad until I have viewed it all

A new hope was also one third of Lucas' script. The critiques seemed fine. And also: Does this only count for the 15ish% of the review critics, or the almost 90% from ...I don't know... "professionals"?

    • @RaikenXion
      @RaikenXion 8 дней назад +2

But the thing is doing a "Rashomon" style storytelling is cool, that's a really interesting idea for a starwars story, I admire that.
      BUT
Deciding to release your "Rashomon Style Series" on a WEEKLY EPISODIC basis is a stupid, Bad idea because it breaks that immersiveness of that story, and only causes your audience and fans to inevitably get frustrated, and judge it by each "part".
Especially if the writing of your show is weak too, and not upto that same quality level as something like GoT, Westworld, Walking Dead and even Andor.
So this is on Disney really. But they never learn do they.
BOBF should have purely been the Godfather style of serious, dark criminal underworld show, showing a former "hired muscle" type figure, reinvent himself into one of the actual "Crimelords" themselves. But as a Fair crime lord, who actually cares for the people, while still being totally badass and ruthless with the scum & villainy.
What do Disney do? Decide that show needs to be kiddy anc childish.
Mandalorian was doing great until they interfered with that show through BOBF and Season 3 Mando.
Obi wan show never needed the "Reva" character in there at all. It should have focused purely in being a character study of the main, title character Kenobi, in exile and watching over luke, while running into Vader. The Reva character, her whole backstory was actually compelling on its own, if it were given its own miniseries, about a Jedi padawan, snatched away and brainwashed, turned into a Inquisitor, all while she's secretly plotting revenge against Vader. But no instead Kennedy decides to have Reva's story crammed into Kenobi's story, which is only 8 episodes anyway lol. And the fans get blame and called ists for not liking the Reva character, when all the while, originally they were promised a show all about the iconic Obi Wan Kenobi.
It's Disney every time and Clueless Kathy Kennedy, who. An never get things right. This is why the franchise desperately needs someone running Lucasfilm who knows STAR WARS and is a passionate fan like us.
Otherwise these mistake will just persist.

I do not enjoy every project or every episode, but even the ones that are not great to me still help me escape for a short period of time ... I have been sadly disappointed by all of it! The writing is so bad. The Acolyte just happens to be the worse one. Like a zit that got so big you had to pop it. I had forgotten about the show, watched E1 and did not like it. I’ve watched all 4 and I cannot understand how the scripts were ever approved or how 180M was spent. Godzilla minus one was the best Godzilla story ever made, for 15M, and they did it through good writing. For some reason Disney does not consider writing to be worth much. Brava Meg! I could not agree more. I am often baffled by the vitriol in people who claim to be fans. So much hate. Does that not, in some ways, defy the definition of "fan"? I mean, there's got to be *something* they like! So the current releases are not satisfying them. THAT is endemic of Star Wars. Just look at how much more popular the prequel movies are now than when they were released - there again where people had expectations and were vocal about those expectation rather than being open to the stories that were produced. Remember when Book of Boba is being thoroughly reviled?
There's got to be room creatively for producers to innovate and step out of boxes (defined by the fandom) and try new things and new directions. There's being a fan, and there's letting your entitlement be more important than the storytelling. I always find something I like in the stories - some stories more than others. I don't expect every release to hit it out of the park. I don't want them to! That would kill the franchise faster than anything.
Frankly, I enjoyed Book of Boba, and Obi Wan, and am enjoying elements of the Acolyte - I take them for what they are, and the stories they are trying to tell. I do not value my own sense of what I want to see more than I am open to what has been created. Were there other shows that I enjoyed more? You bet! But if my inability to either be all in, or all out on the state of current Star Wars makes me not a "true fan" so be it. I have better things to do with my energy . . . like listen to Meg every morning with my coffee.

HERE'S a hot take: if you find a show or series is not for you at the moment, don't watch it! You might see it differently in a decade or so. It might never be your jam. Move on. Focus on what you enjoy, and let the rest fall away. Viewership speaks louder than rhetoric in these days when hyperbole and entitlement are in such evident abundance. Back in the days when the only Star Wars was in the physical movie houses, we used to call it "speaking with your feet."

A couple of thoughts. First: your absolutely right that disagreements should never be attacks or get personal. Doing so only proves you don’t actually have an argument to make. Next: define what “fan” means as it pertains to Star Wars. It used to simply mean, well, you liked Star Wars. I have been a lifelong fan of Star Wars, just not Disney Star Wars. But that’s actually an over-simplification because, now, I am an active detractor of Disney Star Wars because I’m a fan of Lucas Star Wars. I suspect many “fans” are in a similar position. Point being, it’s nearly impossible to define what “fan” means in association with Star Wars now. Lastly: I think the “review bombing” is not how Disney and access media are presenting it. It’s a narrative just like “it’s not safe for some fans of Star Wars” is a narrative (the only difference being that the latter is 100% made up). The show runners, actors and Disney itself created this “problem”. The “review bombing” the way I see it is a reaction by a significant portion of the fan base that have been tolerant of Disney but have been pushed too far by the nonsense, blaming and preemptive race and bigotry baiting that led up to The Acolyte’s release. The backlash, for lack of a better term” would have been less severe if the show runners and actors would have just shut the f up about their identity politics and just talked about Star Wars. But they can’t because they are all activists. So they got a reaction from fans for it that is overwhelmingly negative. They don’t like the response so THEY respond by doubling down and insulting and name calling and shaming and making cringy music videos and actively trying to take down critics and trying to make anybody critical of their nonsense out to be bigots. THEY created the problem and THEY are making it worse. In other words, it’s 100% Disney and the people who work for them who are to blame. They fractured the fan base. In their arrogance they thought that when they bought the rights to Star Wars they were also buying its fan base. They’ve acted in accordance with that belief. They are finding out how wrong they were. What a lot of people, including Disney, fail to realize is things have changed in the fan base. That huge base of fans now has a majority that have, over time, turned on Disney (and with good reason). Turns out you can’t keep fans by releasing garbage and just slapping the title “Star Wars” on it. It also turns out that fans have a tendency to be fans of what is quality and aren’t easily fooled when it no longer is. Who could have seen that coming? Disney sure didn’t.

Also folks need to be aware how access media works with small media outlets (including RUclipsrs and influencers) which usually fluffs up critics scores. This small outlets feed off of early access, critics screenings, early screeners, special events which content creators use to make content. Disney aren’t the only ones that do this and there have been several high profile movies that had high critic reviews early and then drop once outlets not in the access media stream get a chance to see it.

@@MustardSkaven We have no clue. It's horribly written, the acting is less than community film school level, almost zero direction, cheap sets and effects, no consistency with canon, and then, added to all of that, those criticisms are responded to with "well then you're just a racist bigot" by the show runner, her nepo jedi wife, and the lead actress.
So, yeah. It really doesn't make any sense how any actual fan can support it. Like how Obi-Wan wasn't actually about ObiWan. Or Boba Fett being yet another legendary canon figure that was neutered. Hermit Luke. Crotchety Han. Ignoring Finn except as token one liner guy. Mary Sue who didn't earn anything due to "blah blah destiny".
Sci-fi/fantasy enthusiasts love prophecy, heroe's journey, strong characters (regardless of race, gender, sexuality, or species), Mary Sues who earn it through age to help drive the power fantasy (EU Luke being a prime example), and we all love building characters up without the need to tear others down.
Disney had no clue how to hand over the torches. They can't keep up with their own canon they adopted and continue to just cherry pick concepts other writers actually came up with (once again, EU) and present them as their own. "Your writing sucks, your plot makes no sense, the inconsistencies can be picked apart by a toddler, and your focusing on message over substance". "Well, you're a racist/bigot/woman hater".
It's a vast universe. Hundreds of thousands of different species, millions of races, tons of cultures. You can't avoid homosexuality, multitudes of different forms of reproduction, various skin colors and genders. Just frame it all with writing, acting, and directing at a bloody acceptable level. Retconning, changing wikipedia entries due to mistakes an actual fan would never make, bait/switch tactics with Carrie Anne Moss, the absurdity that being impaled on a lightsaber is a flesh wound and a 4 inch dagger is death, a Jedi sitting there while a bar full of patrons is ripped apart by a force user, a jedi master committing suicide, sudden philosophical changes, fire in space, stone catching aflame like flash paper, "I'm going to kill you/you're my sister and we're twinsies and I'm good", Jedi being depicted as bumbling, weak fools with the average intelligence of bacteria, and nepotism out of spite (green lady can't act) as opposed to out of respect for a legacy character (lLeia).
We want to see the Jedi Order as a rigid law enforcement society that holds tradition over empathy and imposes order while the Sith espouse freedom and power while manipulating things. Shades of grey take nuance, and Disney writers lack the skill to portray that while being forced to churn out malarkey, knowing anything Star Wars will have enough viewers who just want Star Wars, even when they don't like what they are watching.
All of us deserve better than Wheel of Time, Rings of Power, post Endgame MCU, most of the DCEU movies, Sony Spiderman properties, and Disney Star Wars. And we most definitely deserve the right to point out what's wrong with beloved IPs.

I'd also note that a lot of people are trying to make a living off RUclips, and a large proportion of them are simply working on the basis that there is an audience out there who want to see bad things said about "woke" media, be it Star Wars, Dr Who, Star Trek Discovery, the Orville whatever. So they try and feed that beast, some of them find it works and that then spawns imitators.
Personally, I don't think the Acolyte is nearly in the same league of badness as say Picard, season 2. I'll probably keep watching. But it also repeats the flaws of the prequel trilogy in that most of the characters are just not sympathetic. If most of those Jedi are killed off, will I care? No, which on one level is possibly just as well (next up, jedi robes to be replaced with red shirts), but we *ought* to be inspired to care and we're just not.

There is no denying that there is a segment of fandom predisposed to disliking nearly everything. Some because it’s Disney, some because they consider it woke, others because women characters are strong, and some because the galaxy isn’t white enough for them. Then there are those that can’t think for themselves and the opinions parrot other outlets. For me as an OG 1977 Star Wars fan I’ve embraced it all, amazed half a lifetime later we still get stories. @TheGothicHangman Mark whining was how the character was written, so I would say he is a great actor for nailing the role. It was literally him following in his father's footsteps. As his character grew, he became less whiney. It's called range and good acting. Something the actors of acolyte are not talented enough to accomplish. As for the show not being white enough, the original trilogy didn't have a ton of white people in it either. A majority of the characters were aliens 👽, the women were the leaders, and the guys were either scoundrels or immature and would have lost without the women leading them. There's nothing wrong with you liking the show, just like there's nothing wrong with me for not liking the show. That's individuality. Like most things in life, it's never as simple as a lot of people on the Internet try to make it seem. I see people put 100% of the blame on either Lucasfilm or the fandom, and both takes are wrong. There are many factors as to why the fandom is in the war that it is now.
    1. Lucasfilm is not doing itself any favors with making these poorly-timed comments on the misogyny inside the fanbase. Maybe they shouldn't be doing that right before a new show comes out and creating controversy. There is also, in my opinion, a lot of arrogance towards the fans.
2.) As a fanbase, we have a responsibility not to yuck each other's yum. It's like you said, it's perfectly fine to not like a show or a movie, but there are a vocal subgroup that just want to tear down people's enjoyment of something. It works in the opposite way too, people trying to convince others that they HAVE to like something, otherwise you're not a "real fan". I've read countless books from current canon and the old EU that are just hot garbage, but I'm still a fan. We all have to be kinder to each other.
3.) There is a growing number of content creators on RUclips that are just stirring the hate pot so they can attract views and clicks. They feel no responsibility to the fanbase they try to attract and will gladly keep the culture war going on as long as they profit from it.
Thank you Meg, for not being like any of these. Channels like you, Generation Tech, Eckhardt'sLadder, etc are why I still come to RUclips for part of my Star Wars fix.

The Acolyte reaction is, I think, what happens when a large community of fans just hits the end of it's rope. The Last Jedi disappointed a lot of people who were mostly excited about Star Wars, expecting it to be good. The Acolyte, years later, is what happens after so many Star Wars shows didn't perhaps completely suck, but almost all of which (Andor excepted) let down the fans in some way or didn't stick the landing: Mando started great but S3 was pretty shaky. Ahsoka started off great, and kind of lost momentum in the last half. Book of Boba was just mostly bad, the Kenobi show was extremely bland (outside a couple of cool moments), Bad Batch feels pretty 'early clone wars' and speaking generally, it's mostly been fairly meh: not horrible, but not memorable either. Disney just doesn't learn, or care, they just want a cash cow. Acolyte of all the shows, just feels completely phoned in, from the acting, to the characters to the weirdly amateurish cinematography, it just feels like it was written and shot by AI. And I think people are just done.

This cast and director keep banging on about "representation" and "patriarchy" which of course was NEVER an issue in SW, but as it is, with identity politics being the coin of the realm, I think the movers and shakers in this program are not going to have broad appeal within the fanbase. Especially when the makers of the program have gone to great lengths to preface that this is specifically female and LGBTQ centric, based on Headland's orientation/life experience and the choice of cast. Believe it or not, that is not going to resonate with a large audience. They're taking a huge IP, with broad appeal amongst all walks of life, nationalities, sexes, ages etc, and using it as a vehicle for some very niche messaging. I mean come on; a coven of exclusively female witches, driven out and persecuted across the galaxy, yet home to a lesbian couple that are so powerful, they have brought a pair of twins to life within one of them, using the force, or "thread", something unparalleled in the SU. A fear without equal. And lo, they're two little dreadlocked black girls without a father, because of course they are...So subtle. And whilst LGBTQ is promoted and supported by every organ of the state, every media outlet, tech platform and corporation, the coven here is portrayed as victims, pariahs in a hostile universe. They could have literally done anything else and it wouldn't have smacked of victim hood virtue signalling. Or at least not lay it on so thick. If it's purely down to their use of the Force being perceived as perverse, by the Jedi, then congratulations, you've either introduced potentially the most powerful beings in the universe as abominations, or the Jedi are a complete joke. I think that's a stumbling block for most of the fandom.
The fact that it is poorly written, acted and shot, really doesn't help, so I'm not sure on what level most people can engage with this show, unless you are that niche audience that enjoy polarising people in this way, because you think that that is "progressive"

I don't put myself out there to be insulted by either side, but when something is so terrible I think people feel more called to action to voice it. If something is mediocre or even good you may not be as inspired to leave a review. If someone likes this show for whatever reason then that's on them. If I know them I may give them a ribbing, but all in good fun. I think politics has entered everything we do now, sports, entertainment etc.. and the ability to sit down and lose yourself in another world or time is no longer an escape when you get pulled back into modern drama and modern politics. Star Wars was pretty good at addressing principles and human issues that were timeless, now they are the complete opposite. It's no longer timeless, somehow they have made the universe much smaller and characters much less relatable to a large group of people because it's no longer about shared individual struggle, but about making heroes out of false victims that very few can relate to. I think the Acolyte is the Crux of people realizing the fun and timelessness of Star Wars is no longer. It's now a propaganda piece and prides itself on such and in that sense it is dead. The show is the Acolyte, the culmination of a shift in storytelling that has murdered what we all once used for escape, hope, and encouragement.

Meg, in the past few days, I have noticed most of the people crapping on The Acolyte the hardest also share a certain...political view. One that seemingly deifies a certain felon. It's not a coincidence that as Star Wars has become more socially inclusive and Disney has taken a firm stance against certain sociopolitical views, a very vocal segment of the online population has come out swinging against them. Nobody likes to admit it, but this is almost entirely a political backlash. Similarly to how there's a sudden backlash after it took "some people" 4 seasons of The Boys to realize Homelander is the villain, and the show is making fun of them. The Acolyte isn't perfect but this extreme level of negativity is far from justified. To be clear, it's okay to not like the show, but the majority of people watching aren't online talking about it. So we don't know how popular or liked it really is. But I when I can click on the social media profile of nearly anyone hatefully trashing Disney Star Wars and The Acolyte, and find other posts expressing strong right-wing political sentiments, it starts to become clear these are the type of people that aren't hating the show for legitimately valid flaws, but rather because they're offended by Disney not being a right-leaning company, and by the show for depicting a more diverse galaxy that offends their personal views.

Right wing ideologues are only exploiting the fact that this show has until now been bad. They may have amplified the criticism and fan backlash but they did not create it : Disney did that by releasing an impressively flawed product. Likewise, Disney also drove neutral and even sympathetic fans straight into the arms of said ideologues.
Take Andor, which is explicitly political and nakedly leftist : they tried to hate on that too, but fans who actually watched the show weren't having it. The quality spoke for itself, and eventually the professional haters realized the clicks weren't coming their way and just gave up. Same story with House of the Dragon and Inside Out 2 - haters tried to hate, complaining about wokeness, black velaryons, female-led narratives, you name it... but that's the kind of stuff only a fringe minority cares about. Normal people just want to be entertained, and are able to discern crap from quality.

Chewie doing a Tarzan yell while swinging on a vine with the ewoks?).
Star Wars was never meant to be Citizen Kane. I think many of us might be holding this show up to a standard it was never aiming for. The Acolyte may be darker and telling a different style of story in the Star Wars universe, but at its core, it's still Star Wars. It doesn't need to have the most brilliant writing to be entertaining.
Andor was a good show that took a more serious and gritty approach to storytelling. Some of the character drama was moderately interesting, and even brilliant at times, and the visual World building was spectacular in some cases. But overall the show was also incredibly boring to me most of the time. All the stuff on Aldhani prior to the actual heist felt like filler and I just wanted them to shut up and get it over with, and found myself longing for the Mon Mothma and Luthan scenes, and ISB scenes because at least they provided some intrigue.
Sometimes you just want the show to quit trying to be clever and dramatic and just be fun.

@@katiemcleod My point really had little to do with Andor specifically, hence highlighting other media that is both progressive and successful. Star Wars doesn’t have to be Andor, but it can’t be the Acolyte. They don’t have the luxury of being outrageously bad.

It’s both. It was being review bombed before it even came out, because people didn’t like who was involved in it, but it’s also just not very good. There is also some review exaggeration, there’s no real word for it, where some are giving it 5 stars.

"but it’s also just not very good". The thing is though, that's just an opinion and not objectively fact. There are tons of people who are enjoying Acolyte and think it's good. It's much like the prequels. A lot of OG fans absolutely hated the prequels when they came out. People were saying Lucas ruined Star Wars, or he ruined their childhood and other hyperbolic crap when in reality they are ok movies. Not great, not terrible but ok. For some reason now, fans expect all SW content to be absolutely 100% amazing and if it isn't then it 100% sucks. There is no middle ground. Add in a social media algorithm that feeds and plays to our our emotions and this is what you get. A divisive an often times aggressive and hateful fandom.

Your video is timely given the conflict between Wookieepedia and Star Wars Theory over changes to Canon resulting from the Acolyte.

It feels like recently, people have forgotten to "agree to disagree," and even I do sometimes. This saying goes for both sides of the debate about the Acolyte. For those who like and defend the show, we have to stop and understand where those who don't like the show are coming from. Most of us understand that criticism and someone disliking a show is fine. But we also have to understand those nitpicky avid Star Wars fans, are still Star Wars fans and crave something that they believe is "quality content". They're just very frustrated rn, and we need to sympathize with that. For some of us, we've all been there. Whether it was from the Star Wars franchise or another franchise.
For those who hate and bash the Acolyte every chance they get, some of y'all need to respect those who do find enjoyment in the show and sympathize with them too. And when I say "sympathize," I don't mean you have to like the show too or be convinced by what they say. What I mean is, like you, they're just another Star Wars fan that likes Star Wars. At least sympathize with that, you're a fan, and they're a fan. Just because they like something you don't, doesn't make them any less or more of a Star Wars fan than you. Hell, you can like a niche Star Wars video game parody, like "Angry Birds Star Wars", and still be considered a Star Wars fan. Nothing should determine what a Star Wars fan is or not.
And for both sides, constantly trying to convince each other that the show is bad or good isn't going to get anyone anywhere. People have the autonomy to determine if something is good for them or not. Instead of "convincing," let's at least have geeky, civil, and respectful Star Wars discussions, debates, criticisms, and arguments. For the most part, we're all Star Wars fans, whether you've seen one movie or taken in all the Star Wars media under the sun. Instead of being divided, let's just have a Star Wars conversation, and learn how to agree to disagree, sympathize with one another and go on with life.

Spot on Meg! You hit the proverbial nail on the head. We can all disagree amicably. Negative opinion and commentary on show style, theme, choices, etc. is all fair play. There is no good reason for viewers to tear each other down. That is evil and demonstrates the diminished stature of the person doing the instigatory troll activity.
