Maybe the only drawback somehow the graphics not appealing to others compared to AoE 3. Well, maybe the graphics look silly for some fans, but I agree with Tempires: Aoe-online was the best Aoe game. It goes back to Aoe2 mechanics, but with the best features of Aoe3. If, one day, Aoe4 is realeased something similar to Aoe-online, I would be pleased.

THIS TAKES ME SOOOO BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD! Aoe 1 was one my first Strategy games back in the days and I remember it often being compared with "Die Siedler" (The Settlers) and Command and conquer. I still remember when I played this game for the first time and how I realised that clicking on the trees and on the coast makes your guys collect stuff and you can build a whole village, what an awesome feeling! Then age of kings came out and it was so interesting so see als those improvements and for me this game is until today still "the new Age of emires". Can't believe AoE came out 21 yrs ago. Still played it with a friend in multiplayer mode a couple of years ago.
I think the Steam Version works well.. apart from its lags in the Multiplayer and its problems with the Mapsize "Epic" from The Forgotten. A HD Remake from the very first AoE would be nice
Here's nothing about Wars of Liberty and Napoleonic Era, my favorite parts of this series. Maybe these are a mods, but still are part of Age of Empires series

This AoE2 still has the best graphics! So nostalgic and gorgeous design. I don't know, those other new games don't have the beauty of the AoE2 and don't have the amazing age (kings) that AOE2 has to fight against another friend. My still now i realy love this game
I think AOE 2 is the most played one nowadays since it is considered the classic version with that amazing and realistic graphics from the middle ages. Its online community is even more than AOE 3. I never get bored from this game though I'm still considering myself a noob after I stopped playing the game 7 years. I was so happy when I knew about the HD version in steam for windows 8-10 and I was not hesitant to buy it.
I been playing AOE since 2004 when i was a freshman in high school..ever since then i felled in love with this game. However, after zone gaming was cancel i stop playing for a few years until finally was back on steam in HD edition.. Im 27 at the moment and still play this game. I know there a lot of people out there who can share similar stories and who probably i have played together on steam.

You also forgot the spin off Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds . it was too developed by ensemble in 2001.It was basically retextured Aoe 2. But was still fun as hell.

AOEO in fact is a great game. After patches it has become highly enjoyable and with a lot of depth. The ultimate fate of this game is nothing but unfortunate. You may argue its cartoonist graphic but it's absolutely the right thing to do if the game needs to be video card friendly
The last one: Age of empires online the ugliest, less playable (too simple and visually confusing) and historically totally inaccurate! BRAVO! AO2=the best! No surprise it gets expansions even last year (the fourth now: 31 different nations now (with a lot of different well made architecture looks) more than 2 hundred official historical scenarios, tens of official random maps and without mentioning historically accurate unique bonuses, techs and units, and of course a logical great fans community!)! AO2 is not only an excellent balanced game on the stats aspect (very rare), has fun playing balance between strategy and economy (not boring: too slow or too repetitive, too simple or too complicated), but is also a historical "book" to motivate the interest of all children in the world for the history of the entire world now! In fact the best video game of History in my opinion, the only one which I can play with fun still now and from the release (20 years ago now!)! Perhaps the most open game, with great fun and lot of possibilities against human opponents. And it develops memory, culture, faster intelligence and strategical imagination. A game that should be a whole matter in school imho. But who said that the best things in life should be learned in a school? You need to deserve them! (^_-)
I have to disagree. Only improvement I see with AOE3 is the ability to cause damage to multiple targets with one shot and to see them being thrown away is serious fun. And also better AI compared to older versions. I still believe AOE2 has the best gameplay out of all.
MaazTech I know that's your opinion. But I'd say otherwise. AOE 3 has improved graphics and 3d dimension. Sure the gameplay is kinda new and they added the "Home City" thing. But I'd say both game have an unique playstyle and can be mastered (micro is a bit tuff in aoe 2, but in aoe 3 you have so many options to build your colony, also HC ftw) As an AOE 3 original player, I kinda like aoe 3, but i have no problem with aoe 2 at all, or all the other games. I think they're equally good, as for some different aspect.

AoE 2 is still one of the best strategy games out there. Part 3 was also not bad but a little disapointing when it comes to complexity. I hope the 4th part will never happen, because i have the feeling that they will screw it up. The problem with games nowadays is, that the developers put too much unnescessary bullshit into them.

you know people say that there CAME a future Age of Empires IV, which I also waited for, but it is merely a RENEWED version of Age of Empires II. If it was a TRUE Age of Empires IV, it should be about the 20. century. NOT the middle ages. I mean come on, AGE IV should be about 1. and 2. World Wars. There is also the cold war. The 20. Century was a bloody Century and for Civilizations there is both Nazi Germany and USSR. There is A LOT of things they could use.
Yet you've missed Age of Empires II HD Edition and African Kingdoms Expansion, if you would have wanted to include all AoE versions officially released by Microsoft (even though it was on Steam, it stills counts)

I've never played AoE I before and I've only played II and III and all of it's expansions. except Forgotten Empires and African Kingdoms. I've played Age of Kings and the Conquerors and the Conquerors is for more superior than Age of Kings. I've played AoE III, Warcheifs, and Asian Dynasties and Asian Dynasties is the most superior out of the three versions of AoE III because it has everything.

The size ratio of buildings to units in the first Age of empires was rly bad
you know people say that there CAME a future Age of Empires IV, which I also waited for, but it is merely a RENEWED version of Age of Empires II. If it was a TRUE Age of Empires IV, it should be about the 20. century. NOT the middle ages. I mean come on, AGE IV should be about 1. and 2. World Wars. There is also the cold war. The 20. Century was a bloody Century and for Civilizations there is both Nazi Germany and USSR. There is A LOT of things they could use.
Yet you've missed Age of Empires II HD Edition and African Kingdoms Expansion, if you would have wanted to include all AoE versions officially released by Microsoft (even though it was on Steam, it stills counts)

Øl Christian it is in the same series, it was used to test out the better graphics and refresh the mind of players (being able to go outside of historical knowledge with all the myths and legends)

I've never played AoE I before and I've only played II and III and all of it's expansions. except Forgotten Empires and African Kingdoms. I've played Age of Kings and the Conquerors and the Conquerors is for more superior than Age of Kings. I've played AoE III, Warcheifs, and Asian Dynasties and Asian Dynasties is the most superior out of the three versions of AoE III because it has everything.
In contrast, in Vietnam and China, we just play AOE1 for 10 years, we even dont know the others,
what about HD and other age 2 expansions.

I have played aoe2 at first, then aoe3. I couldn't get a chance to play the first one due to glitches when I start the single player mode
