- Some fans who attended the Chiefs vs. Dolphins playoff game were hospitalized due to the freezing temperatures, according to the Grossman Burn Medical Center. Thirty patients were treated for frostbite and twelve of them needed amputations.

This...I wouldn't be going outside unless strictly necessary in -27 windchill weather, let alone sitting in an open-air stadium. Some people are certifiably insane.
I mean, they’re probably thinking about how much they paid for the tickets that aren’t refundable. Honestly, the NFL should take some responsibility for this. Anytime the conditions are potentially life threatening, the “non-refundable” status should become unlawful to maintain - they should be required to refund ticket prices for anyone who skips out on a game because it’s physically dangerous and potentially deadly.

Im an occupational therapy student, one of my last lectures was about amputations, and frostbite actually falls underneath the category of dead or dying limbs. It’s one of the common reasons for amputations. This was really stupid on their part.

And they have heaters on the sidelines and they get to warm up at halftime. As a fan, going to a Chiefs game is at least 4 hours of exposure in the cold from leaving your car to getting back in.

Oh please they're getting paid millions and millions of dollars to play football. They're in on the greed lol. Cold storage workers regularly working these conditions every day and get paid near minimum wage.
Also how are they forced? They don't have to play if they don't want to. they'll probably be released but that's fair. Also this temperature is about minus 30 Celsius, I grew up in Ontario and you get like a dozen days at least that cold every year. Some days -40. They make kids go outside during recess in that weather. Grown men who play professional football and paid millions of dollars I think can handle it if 5-year-old me could handle even colder temperatures.

@@d-rockanomaly9243 Workers and playing a game is different, you need agility and it's very easy to get injuries such as tears (muscles, ligaments, etc.) because your tissues get cold from the outside and the you have to quickly start running and in various directions (it's very different from steady and repetitive movement such as eg hiking). It doesn't matter if they're paid millions, human body is human body. A 5 yrs old body is also different, more flexible and kids regenerate quicker than adults.

Other than the U.S., where else would people risk *amputating* their limbs from frostbite over a sports game? Money rules over public health. The organizers could have rescheduled to another day with more favorable weather and kept the fans in the loop. But no, the game just had to go on by any means necessary.🤦🏾♂

45 minutes one way, or round trip? I live in IL and have to walk about 20 minutes one way to the bus stop. It wasn't bad this winter, thankfully. But when it's super cold, even though it's not as bad once you've been walking for a few minutes (I'm a fast walker anyway), 20 minutes can feel like 20 hours. Standing there waiting for the bus is the worst; I can't even imagine what it must have felt like to just sit at that game for hours.

For anyone watching who doesn't know Fahrenheit, converted to Celsius that's -20 but feels like -32 so quite cold, I've dealt with cold weather in a place my family goes to in BC, Canada, in the depths of winter when it gets to about -25, those are "stay inside and do a puzzle" days.
In chicago when its winter winter we get wind chills of -50 you would not survive here.

To be fair sometimes you don’t realize how cold you are until it’s too late. If your don’t regularly go out in freezing temps you won’t know how to prepare. It was up to the stadium to have warming centers if they didn’t cancel the game due to weather.

Props to the players. I played a soccer game in an inch of snow once when it was - °c and id never do it again. Humans should not be in shirts and shorts in those temperatures
Was this really worth it to stand there in the freezing cold for a football game? Those players are paid millions of dollars and have really good health insurance. Now there are amputations. If the stadium is unheated they need to reschedule the game for when it is warmer. Living in Wisconsin and Northern Illinois we had colder than that. We only went outside when we need to start our car or we had to go somewhere. The colder it gets the faster you would get frostbite.
