The great Doug Easley played that beautiful pedal steel - the co-owner of Easley McCain Recording in Memphis, where so many great indie records were made n the 90s - I had the privilege of recording there on several occasions - even got to hang out with these guys when they were there.
ooh I wouldn't say they tried not to be melodic. They just kind of 'hid' their melodies in the verses or bridges, with some exceptions like Carrot Cake and Cut Your Hair. This song, for example, is melodic imo, but barely even has a chorus. But great band anyway.
This song makes my heart explode. The alt country aspect with the slide guitar melts me. I will never tire of this. Pavement was on my stereo for all of the 90s. Love their early stuff but when they mellowed a bit I found the melodies and hooks more accessible for me.
I love every era of them except for the end that carrot rope album. they always had the same incredible otherworldy melodies that no one came up with before or since. they should be considered in the top 10 bands of all time
I heard a song by pavement and thought "wow....I like this" I heard another song and another and another and another and kept thinking "wow! I really like this". I hear this one and I think "ok, I love this band." So happens I was born that year too...
Однажды я просто случайно наткнулась на эту группу Она кажется мне такой доброй беззаботной и ещё какой то.. не могу определить ещё какой Вобщем я обожаю Pavement

Pavement:s too cool for school. Personality, talent and attitude combined with rare aesthetics and musical ability affords you the luxury to pretend. I'll give it to them . They pulled it off. But, Jesus, really? To compare them to the replacements misses the whole first rung.
Loved the album when it was released. And now, after listening to many more albums in between, Wowee Zowee remains a groundbreaking, beautiful, fucked up, great moment of musicality. This is a great song, but so are all the others....
I've never seen this video before so I just realized I have the same shirt Steven is wearing, not the cowboy but the horizontal striped collar t shirt. Feelsgoodman.
my X used to hate when I would sing this very badly , angel of corpus Christi. still sing this shit. R.i. P. J Blockson. the o.g of pavement n my city.
This damn song pops up in my head every other day, every time I am clear of any thoughts. Damn you Pavement! Get out of my head already, it's been 11 years. And I don't get most of the lyrics, it's not like I relate. hahaha
So glad they’re back and I got to see them at the Fonda. They didn’t play this song tho, so hopefully when I see them again at the Orpheum they’ll play this song
I thank God for having been a 90s teen... I lived all this and plenty more. I still remember when Nirvana was a hit. Everybody loved them. Hell, even the jocks and the popular girls liked them...
what sucks in today’s culture of music is that it’s so divided. you got the select few of us that carry on the legacy of good original music, or you have the rest who thinks everything else is trash except for rap.
This is so true. The soccer kids and the art kids both loved the pixies for example. It was a magical time. We will get back there again. In the 2030s!!! Haha
Them becoming mainstream and Teen spirit blaring from frat houses was part of the reason dude was depressed. I saw them about 5 months before he died. He was not into it. Now the Pavement show @Howling Wolf was great.
@@Jonesy_Ford Remind me of the soccer bus in high school, mid to late 80's. We went from listening to The Scorpions and The Doors, to The Smiths and REM, to The Cars and Guns 'N Roses.

Grifters baby!!
Couple of of parasitical junkies posing as cowboys and latching on to the talent of Easley.
They were so good and they knew it
they made it look easy.
exactly
That's damn right
They’ve got style
for miles and miles
So much style
and it’s wasted
they were so good they pretended they could make mistakes
That slide guitar is heavenly
cf50 AMEN brother !
Beautiful Pavement. They tried so hard not to be melodic! But even their discordancy was truly melodic & beautiful. Beautiful band.
beautiful comment
Paula Faye I’ve reflected on your comment more than once and it’s such a perfect description of Pavement!
@@jonkalmakoff Thanks!

Agree❤
Wowee Zowee is an exceptional album in music history and yet not many people know about it!!
I place it in the same tier as Sticky Fingers or Exile On Main Street.
One of the best
My favorite Pavement album from top to bottom.
@@BudSchnelker much better than the Rolling Stones
Only music history buffs know the REAL deal

@@billymasters11you should give Terror Twilight another listen, it’s a great album
the coolest band in the world
Wowee Zowee changed my life.
The slide guitar on this song is one of my all-time Pavement sounds.
The slide guitar hits different
Wowee ZOWEE! This album does everything possible.
Truest comment of the millennium
Just when you thought the song couldn't get any better, that fucking killer riff comes out of nowhere at the end. Such a great work of art.
Cowboys on rollerblades. So ahead of their time.
"I know I'll never know" is an astonishingly perfect way to express rationalization/ denial.
this is one of the best songs i've ever heard
This record is a gateway to country music!
There's an incredibly nostalgic element to most Pavement songs and videos.
It's a vibe
This album is deep deep pavement. One of the greatest bands of all time just coasting on a huge wave of creativity.
I love loads of pavement songs because they have really beautiful melodic parts, and I never know whether it's on purpose or accidental
I heard a song by pavement and thought "wow....I like this" I heard another song and another and another and another and kept thinking "wow! I really like this". I hear this one and I think "ok, I love this band." So happens I was born that year too...
Wow!
i dont actually know if they have a bad song tbh
This album made pavement my favorite band. What a song and what an album.

Maybe not only my favorite pavement song but my all time favorite song.😮
Pavement music never stops to amaze me.
I feel so lucky to know such an incredible band
I've been dreaming to tunes like this for 25+ years. Damn I miss the mid 90's.
Rotten device, I'll say it twice

Costs too much, too much, we'll leave you
Everywhere eyes, nowhere to die
No place to shove your sharpened heel

I know, I'm breathing in to the end
Calling the bluffs, talking so tough
Goodbye to the ugly steeple fear
Good times for ever after
I'm just a man, you see who I am
I'm binding my hooks and open the books
Dirty black hearts
Angel of Corpus Christi
You're so mystic
Tell me what I want to hear
I know I'm reeling in
I know I'm reeling in
To the end
To the end
To the end
To the end
I know I'll never know
I know I'll never know
Best outtro ever
Is it possible for a person to not love Stephen Malkmus?
Billy Corgan tried
I once met him and he was so boring, I forgot.
shenanigans never meet your heroes.... he’s just a normal guy
Yes lol
Probably some cretin people...
Pavement is the zenith of cool. It's all downhill from them onwards.
sum of the best slide guitar ever. spiral stairs ftw
it's not spiral playin, but yah totally kills me. inspired me to play lapsteel along with rowboat from beck
IMaWondERFULPerSON that was Doug Easley actually
montageofheck I did not know this, just assumed it was spiral stairs
IMaWondERFULPerSON I have the deluxe CD, they mention on the inside he added the lap steel to a few songs
montageofheck
I have Sordid Sentinels as well, but never fact checked who played what. Regardless that steel guitar is so damn good
20 fucking years ago...
Timeless.
Art at its finest
What a great song!
Pavement is a perfect combination between Big Star and The Replacements, but in their own way.
Pavement:s too cool for school. Personality, talent and attitude combined with rare aesthetics and musical ability affords you the luxury to pretend. I'll give it to them . They pulled it off. But, Jesus, really? To compare them to the replacements misses the whole first rung.
beautiful
Happy they played this last night in DC. They didn’t in Toronto when I saw them. Awesome tour thanks guys
This is where it all started for me. I'm getting real Killing Moon vibes every time I go back to this
They did so much for an “indie”band. Most indie/punk bands just make a song like Box Elder and stay there, Pavement evolved into THIS.
Wowee Zowee is their best album
Pavement is my favorite country band
They were the best alternative band of the 90s. So many great songs
Wowee Zowee represents my teenage years. If ever I had to explain myself
I felt understood! Knowing there was Pavement ♡ thnx for that beautiful band!
Slide guitar....slide guitar... thank you so much doug easley .....pavement forever
Getting Doug Easley on this track, was the biggest Steely Dan move a band can do
Cowboy Malkmus drifting around on rollerblades is my fav scene in a Pavement mv

22 years later. still the best record. ever.
my favorite country-western song
Love this track, especially the pedal steel!
Beautiful....heart wrenching....sad yet glourious......who came up with music?? damn...sigh....surrender.
Greatest video ever. Goddamn store outlet. BEST EVER! You gotta smile!
This was always my favourite Pavement video. So cool, stoned and happy
The 90s were the high water mark for humanity... it has been down hill ever since. We ARE leaning into the end.
If I had only one Pavement song on a desert island, this would be it. :)
This song helped through a very anxious and hormone fuelled teen years. Thanks domino for signing pavement

Best Pavement song
easily one of their ten best songs

Yes. :)
