Mario Super Sluggers was a sequel to this game, so the devs reused a lot of assets and mechanics that were in this game. The bean ball animations was one of them.
A lot of animations were reused. The fun part is that the camera angle is more zoomed in for Sluggers, so some characters go off screen (notably Bowser).
I Quite odd I find Bowser is More often beaned since he hits home runs very often, I saw it on Dinger city videos where sometimes he goes before Hammer Bro. for the Chemistry Boost. and hit a 2-3 Run Home run or a Grand Slam

Donkey Kong: Charges the mound (best animation). Diddy Kong: Stays in his place and gets mad at the pitcher. Bowser: Shakes it off and then gets mad at the pitcher. Bowser Jr.: Sort of flails. Toad: Does multiple flips and lands on back. Toadette: Simple jump animation. Toadsworth: Does a flip and lands on belly. Shy Guy: Bounces into a flip and lands on belly. My guess is that Yoshi looks sad since he is used to feeling the betrayal of Mario throwing him into pits or something. Or maybe he just really wanted to hit the ball rather than get hit by the ball
