For anyone saying that Peter's drumming isn't anything great, let me remind you of these facts.. Kiss Alive was entirely overdubbed due to sloppy performances on the part of Simmons and Stanley, and occasionally Ace because of constantly jumping and running around the stage, EXCEPT for Peter's drumming and vocals..Engineer Eddie Kramer stated in an interview that he didn't have to correct anything from his live performance..That indicates solid playing, great groove and chops, and control..
What really Paul was talking about it was when Peter stopped playing on the middle of the songs and playing faster and then dropping down slower I think that happened on the Dynasty tour.
I will defend Peter Criss until the day I die. This is exceptional stuff and not one player (among the millions who have tried playing Kiss songs) has ever captured it remotely. That includes some pretty remarkable drummers. He is one of a kind player and will never be duplicated again!
Criss is one of my main influences as a drummer. Any negativity toward his playing is ridiculous. He was the drummer during KISS' greatest output and added something very exciting and groovy to the sound.
Peter Criss can also "swing" better than current drummer Eric Singer, even though Singer is technically more proficient..Peter created the drum parts we hear on ALL the classic Kiss songs, sung and co-wrote 2 of Kiss' biggest hits, and had outrageously unique drum kits, and was a consummate showman contributing greatly to Kiss' live show, which is the very staple of a Kiss show..So before anyone criticizes the man for his ability, question your motive and reflect on your accomplishments first..
@@ButchArgus the only reason he got a co write was because they changed it from Beck to Beth.. Gene should have got the co write. hahaha It was his idea to change it to Beth.
I have been saying it for a while, Peter has some great grooves and makes great connection to music via his style, meaning playing along the melody, that is why he was a great singer in some ways, most drummer are stuck in one beat, and its lame at best, Peter contrary to what Paul says bout him, is the Best drummer Kiss had, and this is one of those tracks that can prove it
Pete was one of the best in those first few years of the band. His style was stifled by Paul and Gene and some of the producers they chose to work with. Then of course, he drowned his disappointment in substances.
I think Peters downfall started when Bob Ezrin came in to produce Destroyer. He was a major coke head. He was mercilessly hard on Peter. Even Gene started to complain about him. Saying Peter couldn't play. Sorry, But anyone who had Gene Krupa train him some. He had to have something or Krupa wouldn't have done it to start with.
@@johnmagill3072 i agree Gene wouldn't waste his time if peter didn't have any talent remeber he(peter ) was taught jazz, big band style of drumming not rock drumming Krupa was a master in his own right like the late buddy rich was to neil peart of rush.
I've always loved his use of the Hi hat. I love all the barks and different accents. He's not just smashing 1/4 notes or 1/8 notes like most rock drummers would have done.
Peter was a Motown drummer that believed he was a jazz drummer. That combination in an American rock band with British guitar aspirations just worked, to create the kiss foundation. Unique and great drummer. Very pleasing to listen to.
Lots of fast little fills. Lots of groove. Peter takes a lot of shit for his drumming but he's at the top of his game here. He squandered his talent but he had a blast throwing it all away!
Paul can say all the negative shit he wants about Peter's drumming; it's pretty badass here! Paul should remember and acknowledge that the only original tracks on Alive! are Peter's drums and vocals!

INCREDIBLY GREAT DRUMMING. Its complex with unique fills and very emotional. Much different that most drummers. PCriss was truly an equal talent to anyone is kiss. Too bad the greed of the stanley and simmons destroyed the band. Also bob ezrin ruined the band because he took away this raw dangerous sound and overproduced them.

I never liked Bob Ezrin. He himself was a drug addict, & likely got Ace & Peter to join him using drugs. I'm one old school KISS fan that to this day, I am no fan of Destroyer. Too polished. It had no 'bite' to it. Eddie Kramer was a far better producer: KISS Alive, Rock & Roll Over, & Ace's solo album. The best KISS was the first three albums, Rock & Roll Over, & Love Gun.
Peter Criss is a Great Drummer !!! The One and Only KISS Drummer ! He' s Style was groovy and sometimes jazzy - I Love his Drum Solo on Alive ! Great Drum Feeling ! The right Drumming for KISS - because KISS was never really Metal - it was Heavy Rock or Hard Rock - and Peter delivers the perfect Drumming for KISS in the 70's !!!
Without doubt this was Peter's playing peak. Seemed to go down hill year by year after this. Shame really cos while he wasn't the best drummer he had a groove of his own.

True, Peter slowly declined after this. But I honestly don't believe it was all substance abuse related. Peter did say on occasion, starting with Destroyer, he wanted to move on but felt obligated to stay in the band. When anyone's heart isn't totally committed to anything, subconsciously, they're telling themselves why are they still around. Thus a process begins of a slow but sure deterioration. This was classic psychology in Peter's case.
Peter sounds amazing here, I don’t know why Paul and gene think his druming sucks. But this is probably proof that his drumming is better than people expect
Nice to hear in detail :) Peter was a good rock n roll drummer with heart at the time (but he wasn't very tight). In those old tracks Peter was alot groovier while the other drummers were more straight up metal drummers. Kiss was my favourite band in the 70s with Peter and Ace but was alot more professional with Eric Carr. Who can blame any of them when they became the biggest hard rock band in the world so fast. Alive is the best live album of all times ;)
I'm not a drummer. These don't sound like typical 4 on the floor beats to me. Lots and lots of very quick , tasty fills. Peter had it. To hell with all the haters.
Very epic but I wish there was a drum track from the Alive! version of Parasite bc the beat he plays in 1:48 also involved the hit-hat and it sounded so much better 😍
after about 77, Peter turned to shit. but in 75/76, he was unstoppable, he played with so much energy and balls, and his chops are just incredible here.
@66MrDonnie YES you go with that origanal REALfeeling, thats what ive always felt about KISS since my first kiss in the 70s , and even through the 80s family dispute, 90s rise and since the second coming. LONG LIVE KISS.. and the KISSfamily,
At 0:33, Peter could have tried throwing in a bunch of fancy stuff for the last line of the verse, but sometimes just a simple roll is all it needs. KISS wouldn't have been KISS without CRISS. ❤
+tarot9230 I have to laugh when *anyone* says that Peter couldn't play drums. Obviously those people either 1) aren't paying attention to the drum parts 2) can't play drums themselves to save their lives so don't know what drumming is.
Look at the swing on the hats Peter did on 100,000 years, on the Alive tour...Eric Singer doesn't swing it like Peter did. Singer only plays straight 1/4 notes on the hats. Peter was a killer Drummer in the day...the 1st 3 albums prove it.
Peter brought so much to Kiss back in the day...As is made abundantly clear right here. Always thought it so hypocritical, and downright laughable when Gene and Paul brings his musicianship into question. He was already a working professional musician in New York City when he joined Gene and Paul. The NYC scene is btw, one of the toughest on earth. So tired of G & P's relentless perpetuation of the Peter and Ace druggie/F***-up narrative. I can appreciate the frustration and difficulty of having to be around addiction, but I wish they would save it for their therapists.
@66MrDonnie I think the only reason people diss his playing is because of how he played from '96 onward. He was a great drummer in the '70s, sadly drugs destroyed alot of his talent (see KISS '79). But like in this video, back in the day he could kick the shit out of the skins!
This proves that in Paul's book, he was completely full of shit regarding Peter's drumming; he constantly said that Peter was illiterate, personally and musically, and always had to be "coached" to play the songs in the studio...do you really think that Paul and Gene would've kept him in the band if he was THAT awful? Things wouldn't have gotten past the audition stage, I mean, c'mon! Even at Peter's first audition, Paul said Peter sounded like crap, but what he doesn't mention is that Peter was forced to use the kit of Tony Zarella, the drummer of Wicked Lester. I think any drummer wouldn't play entirely their best if they had to play on another person's kit; but Peter was able to bring his own drums in to his 2nd audition and got the gig.
Correction....Ezrin tried to dictate what to play and how to play on Destroyer...he wouldn't let Criss just do his thing! I guess Ezrin thought he was a better teacher than the late Great Gene Krupa who taught Criss LMAO! NOT!!!
