I've been using this lens with a K3 Mk iii for about 6 months for wildlife. It is as you say really sharp. I'm ok with the weight, I use a Peak design slide strap. I tend to mostly do 2 hour wildlife walks and only take this lens, for all day walks it would get heavy. I had my eye on it for a while but was put off by the cost, when one came along at £1050 in almost new i grabbed it. The sharpness holds up very well even for quite heavy crops, when i do reach the limits, the K3 Mk iii files sharpen well in Topaz. Good video. Thanks
@@cgriggsiv As i replied in another post before - FIRMWARE isnt not paywalled nor is anything existing moved behind paywall. Youre talking about the new "premium functions" - im not sure why cry pentax is basically offering optional "dlc" for the cameras AND the free normal firmwares, when many other brands dont bother supporting their cameras longer than few years. If you look what the previous firmwares have brought to cameras, theres already been free functions through the years - why be dissapointed? Pentax is smaller brand these days, if they must add some nice new features as option down the line these many years, i think its fine. They have to make money somehow and adding totally new premium features to this old cameras is imho not something to complain about. Your fear of pentax moving existing (!) features behind paywall is something that has never been hinted by anyone anywhere.
Nearly 2 yrs with this lens. Bought it for birding. It's very nice in good light. I wish Pentax cameras had more birding features like newest hybrids do :(
nice Review. i have this lens for around 2 years. and i use it for wildlife walks when i really want a better quality then the 55-300 plm... but i mostly use it for Astrophotography... it is a really nice combo with the K3-III for most things in the sky... was really awesome with the Atlas Komet.. the build in Astrotracer is awesome in the k3-III... you really should try that if you haven´t set to astrotracer typ3. siince you have the mono.. you should try that...
I've had this lens for a couple years mostly for wildlife mainly birds also suffers at the beach I've used it on a number of Pentax cameras a K50, K70 , k3Mark 11 & a K3 Mark 111
Whatever you do my good person do not upgrade the firmware on the K3 or the K3 Mark 2 if you do you're going to have five items behind a paywall at $75 each to get them back up and running
@@cgriggsiv As i stated in my two messages above, you shouldnt spread misinformation about the firmware. Existing firmware do not move anything behind paywall nor has pentax ever hinted about doing such thing. You can easily read about the new (!) premium functions and how they are totally separate from free firmwares on the official pentax/ricoh pages - your fears are simply unfound as it is. You arent losing anything in your current camera now or later - we'll see how they handle the future cameras, but would be very odd if they moved existingly free features behind paywall - i dont think they would do such things nor that they could afford do such thing.
Nice video and review of that lens But I don't hear a review or a commentary from the firmware that just destroyed these cameras behind a paywall although I still need to get that lens and by the way that lens was specifically designed and made for the K1 and the K1 Mark II that's the reason why is that the focus didn't really work at all on the K3 or the K3 Mark II or the K3 Mark 3 and it barely did a lot better with the K3 monochrome And because of the firmware issue I'm not getting another pen text until they get it fixed The camera that is I'm keeping what I have it's going to be a long time before I even decide to get another Pentax camera because what they did and I am a user of Pentax for the past 48 years they just screwed me over like it was nothing over their greed and I work so damn hard so hard I worked for just to get this camera 8 years straight I worked to get it and they just matter of 4 months after I get it they destroyed it with the firmware
@i.like.pixels There are couple paid NEW "premium functions" if someone wants to pay for them: software grad ND simulator and Astrophoto Assist, which further adds aids astro. Nothing is moved behind paywall, everything existing continues to work as before - but some people are extremely upset that these new features cost and arent free. Also these have nothing to do with camera firmware - they are free and continue to be free as before. These are total extra.

Good video. Thanks
That's a great price !
I imagine a couple hours of shooting is more appropriate for this weight of lens 👍
Hoping you never bothered to upgrade your firmware because if you did you now have five items behind a PayWall

This has to be the best informative video on this lens I have seen, thanks so much 🙏
Glad it was helpful 😃
@@i.like.pixels It was, thanks !

@cgriggsiv I'm not in the loop with camera updates what's happened to the cameras? Mine all work fine perhaps I'm lucky

If they're working and you have no limitations behind paywalls don't touch it That's all I got to say
