I ordered one of these on Black Friday and it came with two zippered hip belt pockets. After receiving it I checked the website and there's no mention of this update, so I wonder if they're still in the process of rolling it out. I did order the pack in a size small, which was sold out for quite a while. Perhaps they're in the process of changing all of the packs over to the new hipbelt style and are just working through old stock before updating the specs online.
Someone on the Ultralight subreddit informed me of that today as well, so you're not alone! I'm not sure why their website isn't updated, but that fixes one of my biggest complaints with this pack so I'm glad they made the change. I'll pin this comment so people can see that they made the change.
@@OGKillertunes I am so so happy for everyone who got awesome double pockets. Just so so happy. Absolutely not confused and sad about getting mine at possibly the worst time 😅 (for serious, I would have contacted them too, #gloriousDoublePocketsForLife)
Taylor, I appreciate that your reviews focus on the gear, not yourself like so many other prima donna posters. Great content. Superior editing. I've packed up to 34 lb in a G4-20. It requires you really tighten the hipbelt, but is sufficiently comfortable. Shoulder straps are other-worldly comfortable. Agree with most of your nit picks and would like to include that the lightweight buckles seem like they'd be easy to break. Overall incredibly nice pack.
Why thank you! Your words of encouragement are most valued 😁 I'm glad you're enjoying the pack, I just took mine out on a quick overnight this weekend and it's as comfortable and wonderful as ever!
OMG, I love your video style! All your videos are so peaceful. The blue caught my attention too and you've totally sold me on this pack. I can't wait to try it when mine arrives. I'd love to see more videos about how you film on the trail!
Thank you!! Haha I would enjoy making a video about how I make videos, I spent a lot of the past 3 years figuring out how to film stuff and it would be fun to dive into that but oh boy, that would be a very technical video 😅
Great Video! A year later, do you still use and like the bag? or do you have other recommendations? Ordered this bag this week, in sizes S and M, my torso is 43 cm and my hip 72cm (almost like yours :D), the M might fit me good(it's blue), if the hip belt actually feels more minor than the description, fingers crossed. Since this bag does not have a frame, my understanding of the function of the hip belt is to keep the bag from bouncing while walking fast. So my questions are: If the hip belt helps the shoulders from carrying all the weight? How heavy have you born with it? How did it feel after a 3-4 days walk? Does the hip belt slide down from the weight? Thank you!
What a great review! Sold me on the blue! Ever other pack I have is either gray or black. It'll be nice to have some color. Your coverage of pros and cons was perfect. Thanks! 🤘🕓
Really nice review. This is the first I've seen of your channel and I subscribed, so thank you. Could you share what hat you are wearing in this video? Thanks!
Thanks Chris, I appreciate it 😊 I'm wearing the REI Blast Cap, a discontinued hat that I was really fond of. However, I found the brim to be a bit short for my tastes (sun protection) and therefore picked up an Outdoor Research hat with a longer brim that worked great out in the peaks of Colorado. It's a shame, since I really liked the styling on that REI hat!
Awesome review, but I think you forgot to mention that the pack is blue. You sold me with the pack when you mentioned the "sub 15-pound base-weight, looking for an ultralight pack but can't imagine losing the hip belt." I'm curious if any other pack in the market fills this niche as well
Haha I'll have to update the video description to clarify the color 😅 So I actually have explored a bit since making this review, and my new go-to pack isn't the G4-20 anymore, it's a Dandee Pack! One that doesn't even come with a hipbelt by default! However, it crucially has attachment points for one, and after slapping a Gossamer Gear Fast Belt onto it, I found it's supremely comfortable as well. Not quite as plush as the hip belt on the G4-20, but the shoulder straps more than make up for it. So as long as you can throw a GG Fast Belt on a pack, I'd say it's worth looking into. The Dandee Pack gets my full recommendation (I've got a full review coming once I'm done with the TMB video), but it's similar to a Waymark / Palante pack.
Excellent review (as always) and you answered a few questions I had about using a capture clip with it. I've been looking at this pack for a big carry, snowshoe day pack and summer frameless, low volume pack. I've seen batted around the internet that GG changed the mesh side pocket to a standard one, but I need to follow up with them to find out for sure. As a fellow Minnesotan, I really enjoy your content on the SHT; maybe we'll cross paths at sometime.
Thank you so much! 😁 Yup, it seems that they did quietly change the mesh pocket to a standard one sometime within the past 9 months and didn't announce it. And maybe we will cross paths on the SHT! Haha, I'll be the guy with the bright blue pack and two cameras strapped to my front. I hope to finish it this summer!
Thank you ☺️ I really just wanted to keep in mind all the memory affected color-blind people who might watch, if I don't remind them it's blue approximately every 10 seconds, how will they know?
This is great, thanks for sharing. This pack is right near the top of my list for something that size, so it was nice to see the review. Oh, and I love the blue!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback 😊 Here's a link to the data in my spreadsheet. These were just the packs I looked at, there are many other worthy packs that I didn't include for whatever reason (I completely left off ULA packs for a very dumb reason: I just don't like the look of grid nylon). docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/e/2PACX-1vRuvNrlgQV7GUSVAHL2eud3RAWv11-Za7nGrAdPtTbU5adslJ1S1SvsEabtluiFqyvKI0x59b1Ee1L9/pubhtml The Normalized Volume column shows the volume on a 0 to 1 scale, so that I can get a better sense of where each pack falls in the list. exactly what i needed. I'm 6'1" with a 30" waist. Sounds like I would be ok with a large? Do you find you have a ton of extra webbing when tightening down the waist?
There is a bit of extra webbing, but it's nothing out of the ordinary and honestly I'm debating about just cutting off the excess myself! I do think the Large will be a great fit for you, I still love this pack (took it on 11 days though Colorado and it was so so comfortable).
Thanks Bob 😁 I don't have a video showing my GoPro system, but I took some pictures! imgur.com/a/bkNJeCZ I used a toggle on some shock cord that I attached to the D ring, and I just cinch it up at the neck of the grip. However, I recently decided I'm going to transition away from my current setup 😅 As much as I like the grip I have been using for years (Victure makes it, really nice) I realized I already carried sticks, my trekking poles! So I got a quick release system that clamps onto the poles, doesn't weigh a lot, and allows me to quickly attach the GoPro to the pole. I think I might still hang the gopro from the same spot, just without the grip attached to it. Keeping my camera gear in order on trail is a challenging but fun puzzle, but I'm really excited with this new system since it means I don't have to hold two trekking poles with one hand. Also, less weight 💯 For my snow adventures, however, I think I'm going to use a quick release magnetic system, which is a bit heavier, but seems easier for switching between poles, helmet, and/or chest mount. Really excited to test that out west this spring!
Thank you! So far so good on the 70d. I wish it was more waterproof (soaks through pretty quick although that's about par for the course with nylon backpacks) but no durability complaints so far.
Great review! I appreciated the various perspectives on its features whether they be in surplus (hip belt) or lacking (load lifters). I'm looking for a pack for my wife, and this pack is also near the top of my excel spreadsheet. :)
Thanks Leonard! Haha always a pleasure to meet another spreadsheet backpacker 😅 I just took this pack out this weekend up on the Superior Trail with close to 30lb (I was carrying all the food and some extra stuff since my two hiking partners couldn't support much weight) and this thing still performed great! Better than I expected, my fondness for it grows with every trip I take.
Thanks for that informative video! I'm considering buying one of those. Is it waterproof or do you recommend using a raincover? I'd like to know what kind of water filter system you use in the video. I'm looking for a decent solution. I got a Grayl, but it let me down on a hiking tour in Canada. Thanks!
Why thank you 😊 The G4-20 isn't waterproof, robic nylon will let water through in sustained rain. I took this pack into the Collegiate Peaks of Colorado with 3 days of sustained rain and the inside of my pack was rather wet. Keep in mind, most comparable packs are going to have the exact same problem, unless a pack is designed to be water resistant (like the HMG series), you're going to have to be smart about keeping stuff dry. On that note, a raincover is okay, but a pack liner is a better solution for most cases since it's actually waterproof and won't inhibit water bottle access. I should also note that a wet pack wasn't really a problem with the G4-20 since in Colorado I had packed the essential stuff in dry bags and the pack didn't soak up tons of water like what would happen on a beefier pack like an Osprey Atmos. If you are looking for something a bit more water resistant, something made of XPac (like the DD40 I reviewed in another video) will do a lot better for sustained rain. XPac isn't waterproof, but will resist it for a lot longer and on day 3 of the sustained rain in Colorado, I was wishing I had brought that pack. For something similar to this G4-20 made of XPac, the DD40 is the value king, but anything of the same volume by Waymark, Superior Wilderness Designs, Atom packs (if you're in the UK), or a custom order from Dandee packs (they're a great value too!) will be great. For water filtration, I use a Sawyer Squeeze and CNoc Vecto 2L and it's a fantastic system. Among water filters, most backpackers will agree that the Squeeze is the most reliable and "best" filter out there (if such a thing could be picked). In some situations a BeFree filter will be better, but they clog faster and aren't quite as durable. I can use my system as a gravity filter, or squeeze it through if I'm in a rush. The Grayl is actually good for somewhere like the BWCA, but they're far too heavy and bulky and short-lived for backpacking. Look at the Halfway Anywhere gear survey for an indication of how solid and popular the squeeze is (www.halfwayanywhere.com/trails/pacific-crest-trail/pct-gear-guide-2019/#:~:text=HIGHEST-RATED%20PCT%20WATER%20TREATMENTS).
@@TaylorPassofaro I really appreciate your tips. Thanks! It seems like I have to get a Sawyer Squeeze and a new backup (which one is not yet decided^^) :-)
Fantastic review, as was your Superior Hiking Trail video (reminded me of my old scout days, though my much heavier setup at the time made the trip more difficult than it should have been). Regarding the quiver pocket, does your DD X-Mid 1P fit in it? I have the Seek Outside Flight (overkill for many of my trips, but it's super comfy and I camp in cannister land frequently), and I put my X-Mid in its side pocket, which I assume to be smaller than a typical GG pack. My 2P does not fit in my side pocket- it is obviously stouter than the 1P, though also shorter. I'm guessing both would fit in stuff sacks of similar volume but longer length.
Thanks Zane, I appreciate it 😁 I tested out the XMid 1p in the quiver pocket and in the included stuff sack it barely - just barely - fits. I think I'd probably repack the XMid into a longer stuff sack to make it easier to squash in there, but it's definitely possible. I've always heard great things about Seek Outside, they make killer packs!
@@TaylorPassofaro thanks for testing it for me! I just picked up a cheap longer silnylon stuff sack, so that should alleviate my issues. Looking at getting a smaller pack for non bear can short trips (national forests, state parks) for example, and this pack may be the play
You mentioned your phone fit in the mesh pocket. Would a iPhone in a case fit in the zippered pockets? I, too, fit your description of this packs narrow use case, so your review has been helpful. Thanks.
My Pixel3a fits easily with plenty room to spare, so I'm confident that even a 12 Pro Max would fit. Maybe if it was in a grippy rubber case it would make it annoying to get in and out, but I think you'll be fine.
Thank you! Good question, it is 23 inches from the very bottom to the top, basically the length of the sit-pad since it extends the whole length. I am also debating about attempting to use this as a carry-on, although my Dandee 35L will probably be best for that. Edit: I should note that since you can easily remove the sit pad, you could roll squeeze and compress this thing a bit more if it's not packed tight.
Great review Taylor, convinced me to pull the trigger on the pack today with the 25% discount ( which offsets cost of customs/duty to Ireland! ) Your gear reviews are excellent. Would love to know your gear list at 8:00 in the video?
Thank you! I hope you enjoy using it, Ireland is one of my bucket list places to backpack one day, I wish you well on your adventures! The gear list at 8:00 was just an approximate grab of stuff! Here's a lighterpack of what I was using at the time that should follow that close enough: lighterpack.com/r/nc7gz1 And here's a lighterpack to what I'm hoping to use this summer: lighterpack.com/r/kci5ld
It has a little big of frame property, but not significantly. It's not like the stiff sheet in a Crown2, but it's not a wimpy piece of thinlite either.
Great and very informative review! I find that mesh hip pocket quite odd, it just seems like extremely bad decision for that pretty good looking backpack! Also The lack of load lifters. At around 8:40 mark you're folding the backpack, if you remove the asspad there, could you roll it into a smooth burrito? I'm really needing that property for my bikepacking, since I'm needing a backpack than can be folded into a cycling bag during a ride. And would you know would the folding hurt the bag? Does it seem fragile
Thank you!! A few people on the Ultralight subreddit reported that currently sold versions of the G4-20 have solid pockets on both sides, so I think that issue is fixed going forward. I wish I could trade mine out, but tbh the add-on pocket is pretty nice 😅 As far as rolling the pack, I think it would roll just fine without the back pad! I don't think it would hurt the backpack, it's made of Robic Nylon and despite being lightweight, is pretty durable. My main complaint with the fabric over something like XPac is that the Robic soaks water up quicker - which isn't a huge dealbreaker, and not unique to Robic - it's just an annoyance. But for durability, I expect this thing to last a long time.
Yep! It should fit vertically, someone commented on the ultralight subreddit when I first made this www.reddit.com/r/Ultralight/comments/kusayi/comment/gsnwjde/?context=3
Sooo do you prefer this over the DD40 most of the time? I just got a Gorilla and ordered the DD40 as well as a couple of GG tents to compare to my X mids and do a gear showdown lol
Good question, but I don't have a clear answer. Haha, maybe ask me at the end of 2021 when I've taken both of these out on a few more trips, I hope to have clearer answers on everything in my loadout! I think when I'm alone on a section hike up on the Superior Trail, I'm more likely to grab the G4-20 since it's previously worked really well up there and I don't necessarily need the features and durability the DD40 provides. The one thing that would be nice for that situation is the more waterproofness of XPac. I do get a bit nervous when it rains and I'm using the the G4-20 since the Robec nylon it uses wets out faster, and the Superior Trail can be notoriously irregular with it's rain depending on the time of year. However, my important stuff is in dry bags, so this really is just an annoyance more than anything and one I should just embrace. If I head out to do the Colorado Trail this summer, I'm much more likely to bring the DD40 since I think it's much better suited for a more "exposed" environment with less trees and more rocks, and there's a higher likelihood of water carries. But I really don't have a solid opinion on this. That's one of the reasons I got both, they exist on different ends of the spectrum for what a pack of this size accomplishes, and I thought having both in my quiver was a good idea, and one I don't regret.
You’re a skinny but tall guy like me. Is the hip belt small enough for you? GG’s website says the minimum waist size for the size large is 32”. I’m right at 32”.
Not quite, there's a few key differences, although many people call the G4-20 a stripped back, cheaper, Mariposa. I'll run down the list: Mariposa has: 1. An actual frame, it can carry more weight more comfortably 2. Load lifters 3. Extra side pocket above water bottle pocket 4. Flap top closure with map pocket 5. Trekking pole tip holders 6. Removable hip belt (and overall a bit beefier hip belt) G4-20 Has: 1. Roll Top closure 2. Horizontal quick stash pocket 3. Side compression out of the box (mariposa can add this easily) 4. Top compression strap 5. Removable closure straps 6. Thicker foam back panel 7. It's BLUE If you like the idea of the G4-20, but wished it had more structure for heavier loads, the Mariposa is the way to go (or the GG Gorilla, depending on needs). Both packs are very comfortable, both have a great selection of features, and both are top quality packs.
Personally I'd go for the large, but it all depends on your toso! If you've got a long torso and stubby legs like me, go for the Large, but if you're a long legged person, go for the Medium!
I through hiked the PCT with an original G4 and destroyed it from over loading but made it to OR -I miss that pack. On the original pack I was able to stuff a folded 3/4 sleeping pad in those pockets where the new sit pad is held; it worked as a 'frame'. Is anyone doing this with the new design?
Hey, I have a question for you, I'm interested in buying a gossamer gear G 4-20 backpack. What size do you prefer? I'm 177 cm tall and my back length is 50 cm, which is between the size M and L. Thank you for the advice,
@Dichotomy & Balance heavier loads meaning 15-20 lbs total.. and no that weight does not kill my shoulders. I will use a pack with hip belts if I am pushing 30+ lbs.
Haha, you've got a very good point but my younger brother might disagree, I'm actually the largest out of the three of us! Next time he's in town maybe I'll have him try this on to see how accurate my statement is. Honestly though I'm relieved as well since this means that the entire lineup of torso sizes should work for pretty much anyone. I just wish I knew this before I ordered the medium, it would have saved some headache.
I ordered one of these on Black Friday and it came with two zippered hip belt pockets. After receiving it I checked the website and there's no mention of this update, so I wonder if they're still in the process of rolling it out.

@@Lizard08150 I carry some water purification tablets as a backup, and thankfully have never had to use them!
Thanks Zane, I appreciate it 😁
I tested out the XMid 1p in the quiver pocket and in the included stuff sack it barely - just barely - fits.
@@Juansoto20233 Happy to help 😊 Good luck on your adventures!
Excellent review and thank you!
What is the length for size L, up to the straps?
I am interesting if I can take it with me as carry-on.
Here's a lighterpack of what I was using at the time that should follow that close enough: lighterpack.com/r/nc7gz1
And here's a lighterpack to what I'm hoping to use this summer:

How stiff is the back foam insert in G420? Does it have any "frame" quailities?
I wish I could trade mine out, but tbh the add-on pocket is pretty nice 😅
As far as rolling the pack, I think it would roll just fine without the back pad!
Another great review. Love the channel!
Thanks Sam! 😊
Amazing review. Can I fit my bear canister in there? (BV-450)
Yep! It should fit vertically, someone commented on the ultralight subreddit when I first made this

@@TaylorPassofaro Thank you kindly!
Amazing review. Well done.
Nice review👍
You’re a skinny but tall guy like me. Is the hip belt small enough for you? GG’s website says the minimum waist size for the size large is 32”. I’m right at 32”.
You'll be just fine with the large, I usually buy 30in pants (though depending on brand I'm more realistically a 29) buy the large fits me great!
I'm a 34" waist and with the belt cinched tight, it looks like I have about 3-4 inches of adjustment left.
Excellent review thanks a lot.👍
Is the Maraposa basically the same just 60 liters?
Not quite, there's a few key differences, although many people call the G4-20 a stripped back, cheaper, Mariposa. I'll run down the list:
Mariposa has:
1. An actual frame, it can carry more weight more comfortably
2. Load lifters
3. Extra side pocket above water bottle pocket
4. Flap top closure with map pocket
5. Trekking pole tip holders
6. Removable hip belt (and overall a bit beefier hip belt)
G4-20 Has:
1. Roll Top closure
2. Horizontal quick stash pocket
3. Side compression out of the box (mariposa can add this easily)
4. Top compression strap
5. Removable closure straps
6. Thicker foam back panel
7. It's BLUE
If you like the idea of the G4-20, but wished it had more structure for heavier loads, the Mariposa is the way to go (or the GG Gorilla, depending on needs). Both packs are very comfortable, both have a great selection of features, and both are top quality packs.
I just got one of these packs today ( March 18 2021 ) and it also has the nice hip belt pocket on both sides ! sweet !!! THANK YOU GG for that !!!
Fantastic review bro. Great job!
Thanks, I appreciate it!!
I generally wear earth tones but in the woods no problem being colorful
Brilliant review, thank you!
That's very nice of you, thanks!
My weight and height similar to you, and I am thinking of buying medium or large size.
Personally I'd go for the large, but it all depends on your toso! If you've got a long torso and stubby legs like me, go for the Large, but if you're a long legged person, go for the Medium!
did u mentioned your backpack is blue?
Oh dang, I forgot to mention that, gonna have to make a follow up video...
Great review...!
Thank you!
Hmmm, I haven't heard of anyone doing this but honestly I think it would work. I don't have a cut down torso pad, so I can't test, but I'm optimistic
How tall are you?
About 6ft! See 3:50 in the video
Hey, I have a question for you, I'm interested in buying a gossamer gear G 4-20 backpack. What size do you prefer? I'm 177 cm tall and my back length is 50 cm, which is between the size M and L. Thank you for the advice,
For your torso size, I'd get the Large. I'm mostly of the philosophy that a slightly taller frame is better than a shorter one!

Thanks Jim 😊
Great pack. I cut the hip belt off and made it the perfect pack for my heavier loads. It is large capacity and swallows gear li!e a champ.
Why would you cut off the belt if carrying heavier loads? Doesn't that kill your shoulders?
@Dichotomy & Balance heavier loads meaning 15-20 lbs total.. and no that weight does not kill my shoulders. I will use a pack with hip belts if I am pushing 30+ lbs.
Thank God that humans don't have a 27-in waist ever, or not since I was 13
Haha, you've got a very good point but my younger brother might disagree, I'm actually the largest out of the three of us! Next time he's in town maybe I'll have him try this on to see how accurate my statement is. Honestly though I'm relieved as well since this means that the entire lineup of torso sizes should work for pretty much anyone. I just wish I knew this before I ordered the medium, it would have saved some headache.
Do you know of Blue Boy Backpacking? cause he reviewed this pack and also loves Blue!
