Nature doesn't have a refrigerator outside. I plant our seeds in October in locations of our property. Use potting soil, peat moss, and little sand. They are covered in a about 1 - 2 inches. Pack down and water. I stake close by and place a metal wired cage around the site. Keeps animals from digging them up. Next spring, most grow and breaking ground. Last spring planting now are 3 - 6 feet high. Our 3 -4 year old trees are already producing. 5 mature trees are producing so much. Good luck. I like nature grow our trees, no containers, no frig, and much handling.
Thank you for this great video! I was sad to discover the ancient conker tree nearby has been felled, so I am having a go to germinate some conkers to plant in its place.
Exactly the same reason here, the local council is going to cut the tree down because it's a danger 😢 We have collected loads of conkers and are trying to germinate them. Also it's right on the corner to our street and been a beacon when we return home. so when we move, we will hopefully have it's "children" with us lol
Sadly, all 25 of the Horse Chesnutt, that passed the float test, failed to grow and died. I managed to save 7 of the small trees growing from the ground before they cut the grass around the tree. Only 1 has survived and doing well. It has not helped this year with the Excessive amount of Slugs in the UK gardens. They ate almost all but this last one, which I had to raise off the ground and put a big bucket of water on each of the support legs for the holder of the tree pot Plus a massive circle of salt around the buckets, topped up every 3 days lol. The tree in question, has been postponed being cut down for 1 more year, so I have this autumn to collect more "Conkers" and get them planted and growing.
This video worked perfectly for me germinating a bunch of conkers from a tree outside my house! Thanks so much was a lot of fun collecting and planting :D
I grabbed a few to do while walking my macaw parrot today I don't think he can eat them I think there toxic to macaw but I wanted to try sprout a couple for bonsai babies next spring, think I'll go with the plastic bag in a tub 3 weeks you left yours, did you go in and add any more water to them in that time.. thanks for the video I was sure someone else had to jave had the same idea, are you planning a forest with those you got loads..I just grabbed a handful...
The ones in the paper towel & box you let germinate too long. Checking them more often & planting as soon as they’ve sprouted will help prevent them from molding & growing super long tails.
Question. WHEN do you do this? In October, when you can pick the conkers? In the spring? Do the conkers need to get cold/frozen beforehand, or do they germinate despite not haveing been cold? (Like oaks do). Also, do you keep them indoors, or outdoors for the germination?
I did exactly as the video (picked them in September time) and immersed in water for a week or so then put in takeaway containers in damp kitchen towels in the dark for a month. They have germinated fine and have been potted. I didn’t think it would work but it does.
Hi no I didn't put them in the cold or frozen them beforehand it was very cold so I just left the in that bucket till I was ready to do the video.. I collected them few weeks before.. Thanks..
Hi thanks for watching the video. I did this when it was conker season, I kept them inside for the germination. I didn't keep them in the fridge before hand I just soaked them in some water as you see in the video.
I put two Conkers in separate pots on 25th November 2023 & over the last week it’s now Tuesday 09th of January 2024 they have both started growing roots. I have them just below the soil surface & I noticed a white crack on one of the shells after I gave them a good cold watering so I assumed one had in fact started to sprout.
@@ShiftedReality90 Both germinated but only one grew. It was doing so well until I put it outside within 30 minutes the wind snapped off one branch I was gutted. I left it outside in its large pot but never grew any bigger 😢. Months later I decided to take it out of the soil and was surprised to see the entire plant pot was full of roots. I’m going to try again this Autumn but this time grow it 💯% inside.
@@stuartwells4133 That sucks! Perhaps you could have grown it inside a bit longer before taking it outside? Don't give up. I've never been able to get any conker to germinate. Tried methods from RUclips and still nothing. I'm trying again this year. Got 6 in my fridge at the moment. They all sank in water and I picked them fresh from the ground. How did you manage to get yours to germinate?
@@ShiftedReality90 I put the two I had in water which they sank so I knew that they would germinate so I then wrapped them in tissue and put them into a plastic box soaked the tissue with a spray bottle with water. I put them into the fridge checking every week for any roots to appear. After four week I put them into small pots with soil and watered them and left them in my kitchen somewhere cool and then eventually I did see one had actually started growing.
@@stuartwells4133 Thanks for that information. I think I was going wrong because I left mine in the fridge for 3-4 months to try and simulate winter conditions and then I didn't give them time to sprout. I thought after the long cold spell in the fridge I had actually killed them as they weren't sprouting. I've grown apple, maple, cherry and plum in the fridge and they all shot roots out after 2 months while still in the fridge. I was expecting the conkers to do the same. I'll definitely try your method this time. 😁👍 Would it be cool if I kept you updated with my progress?
i germinated em in fridge and roots are coming out now... middle of january, what now? put em in pots? outside or inside? i dont have shed or garden, thed froze out side? or can they be in pots inside near window?
Hi thanks for watching my video, they can be left outside as long as it is not freezing.. u can cover the pots with any sort of clothes to keep out the cold.. they grow in the cold naturaly.. just don't let the soil dry out..
I have collected a few from the ground after full winter season. Excited to try the container/paper towel method in the cupboard. Do I need to resoak the paper towel or just the one time and wait few weeks? Great video
hi linda thanks for watching my video just keep an eye out over the next few weeks if the paper towel is dry just spray a little water to moist it. thanks n good luck xx
Mine are starting to look a lot like yours at 10:45, do you have any advice for what I should do as they keep growing? I've got two planted in the ground in a planter we have, but I've put plastic bottles around them to protect them, I also have some others in plastic pots that have roots, but haven't got stems yet, what should I do with them once they grow out? thanks.
Hi Nathan thanks for watching my channel. I will be growing a few in containers to keep in my garden as I have no soil to put them, the rest I will sell as people have ordered them. I still have a few that I did last year in pots and plastic bottles they do grow really slowly so you can keep them for a few years. I am going to see have many years I can keep them in pots. Hope this is helpful to you please let me know if you like to know anything else..thanks again for watching.
@@blossomnaturally3768 Yes, funnily enough. Nature does have a refrigerator outside here in a temperate climate.
The refrigerator is supposed to simulate fall/Winther to trigger germination
Key point is meeting requirements for seed germination exotic plants can't find locally in nature.
