Sounds a lot like what we called "numbing spice" which was a small seed thrown in every other dish in when me and some friends were in China. The local would always try to get us to eat them straight so that they could watch us writhe in discomfort
This is in the same genus as the US native shrub called Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum americanum) aka toothache plant as it also causes a numbing sensation when eaten.
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy says that the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster is "like having your brains smashed out by a slice of lemon, wrapped 'round a large gold brick.". I haven't tried Szechuan peppers, but I've quite a bit about them and it sounds like it does the same to your mouth.
Amazing! I get chili oil from an Asian market near me and they use a lot of szechuan peppercorns inside. Numbs the mouth. Thank you so much for making these videos. Much love!
Hi, if you although like sichuan pepper oil, please contact me to get more information. We are the supplier of sichuan pepper oil. FB search for: YAOMAZI.
Batak people use it as a food ingredient. especially the seasoned meat dishes. There it name is called "Andaliman." with this ingredient, makes the cuisine tasty :)
This! I'm a bataknese and live in Europe. I've been craving for bataknese food and I just learned it few weeks ago that Andaliman is basically this pepper. OMG!
My grandpa used to have a tree, and I plucked one off the tree out of curiosity when it was orange and really ripe, and my tongue got numbed for 30 minutes(literally). I like it in my Korean fish soup(chueotang). I think they got rid of the tree because I tried it.
You should review the Szechuan button (Acmella oleracea). Although not a fruit (flower), I think it would fit your channel since it is in fact, weird. Chewing on one creates an electric buzzing feeling in your mouth and causes you to salivate a lot, similarly to your szechuan pepper experience. The primary difference being that it is not unpleasant (I quite enjoy it) and it only lasts five minutes. For fun, mix it in with a cocktail to make a buzzy drink. Love your videos! Keep it up.
Next time you should try taking a sip of water! An interesting thing about this spice is that it leaves a lingering lemon like flavor on the tongue if you drink water afterwards
I found a plant from the same genus growing in my yard outside (it's just as edible too,) so I came to see your review of this fruit since it likely tastes extremely similar. The fruit definitely smells like pepper and BOY does it numb you lol. It's not ripe yet though, so it was just a small taste, no eating or anything. Honestly not sure if they're toxic or not when they're unripe so I wouldn't bother eating it PROPERLY, nor judging the taste properly, for that matter. Though, it looks like these may have been unripe? I thought they were eaten when they turned red. Anyways, they smell like they'll taste great when used as seasoning. Though I think this species does more numbing than the szechuan peppers do. It's known as the toothache tree because they use the leaves and bark to help toothaches.
How did people come up with the idea of spices anyways? My only guess, is that it spawned from some conversation between two cavemen. Caveman 1: Hey remember those things we ate yesterday that almost killed us? Caveman 2: Yeah, what about them? Caveman 1: Lets dry them out, and then grind them up, to make that taste of emanate doom stronger, and them put it on our food. Caveman 2: That sounds like a great idea to me!
I ate lots and lots of them in one dish in beijing - kung pao. Pretty normal. It is weird in the beginning but very addictive. You will love it after maaany of them.
Yes, absolutely! We used to call it "hospital" because it reminded us of a cleaning agent, that is used in hospitals. Sounds bizarre, but you really get to enjoy it after you got used to it.
I bought myself a medium jar of these peppercorns! Now to figure out what to do with them. The tingling sensation when a single pod is eaten is like no other. It felt refreshing but to the affect of burning off your tastebuds. Definitely not something to let linger on your tongue haha.
I'm using Szechuan Pepper micro leaves in my restaurant very pungent very numbing less biter than the peppers which I also use I feature it in the firefighter warriors dish only for the strongest of them all my stuff think it should come with release forms
Jared try soncoya if you get the chance its another rare annona from mexico. Also im hoping the keitt you ate ate has a video review in the future id love to hear your thoughts on it.

Yes they where they same kak . It is look different shape some how like chily there is different look but same spicy. What we have andaliman in sumatra secuan from Thai it looks more round and fat.
this is my favourite spice! I always put some oil extract of this in my noodle soup or wonton. You get addicted to it if you have it enough times.

They're the same thing. "Numbing spice" is just a literal Chinese translation.
This is in the same genus as the US native shrub called Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum americanum) aka toothache plant as it also causes a numbing sensation when eaten.
Interesting. I heard that people in China use szechuan pepper to get rid of toothache the same way as well
I can’t believe Steven took three after he knew what it tastes like. That’s courage! 😂
Teeny tiny flavor grenades, that's what they look like to me.
accurate
Learned somthing new again, i always thought Szechuan Style food was so citrusy because of Lemongrass, now i know its the Pepper, related to Citrus.
I had no idea either, I just assumed it was like a chili type spice.
lemon grass is mainly used in southeastern asian food. we chinese dont use it that much

If there ever were a h2g2 themed bar, this would have to be in the Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster

I wonder what it would be like when under the influence of miracle fruit (Synsepalum dulcificum).
Batak people use it as a food ingredient. especially the seasoned meat dishes. There it name is called "Andaliman."

I put szechuan pepper on literally anything I eat that is spicy. It really helps you handle the heat!
Omg that made perfect sense for the first time in my life 😱
I have lots of these in my garden. Good for seasoning beef stew and soup.

That's sad. Tree didn't do anything wrong.

Sounds cool!
I love how Steve deadpans it after eating three hahahaha
4:25 How did you anticipate the current detergent-eating craze by so many months?
I did this before it was cool
Next time you should try taking a sip of water! An interesting thing about this spice is that it leaves a lingering lemon like flavor on the tongue if you drink water afterwards
Yup. Ma la . The ma means numb. The la means spicy. Toast it grind it. Add in to spicy soup or any. One of my favourite spice
I have a small tree of this stuff in my greenhouse. Looks like I better check out when to harvest them. Figured they'd change color.

When I watched your expressions I could almost tasted the pepper in my mouth. Next time, just say 'no'. LOL
Its leaves go best with pork curry and its seeds(cover) are mostly aningriden with dishes after its dried fully.

Hi I am from Nepal and we people do eat lots it's like a spice's we call it timmur
Yes! I live near a Nepalese neighborhood in NYC and some of the restaurants use it in the chili sauce. Its so good with momos.
this is gold

Ha ha that's a strong little fruit
I watched this video twice because it made me laugh so much 🤣
I’m learning about these since the video you posted this morning. Apparently the seeds are not so good . Thanks again
I once Saw someone eat it in a Chinese restaurant and had been curious on it. Thanks for the info.
Hairy and vibrating a good way to describe it
Sichuan pepper tastes like a 9V battery on the tongue.
I like it! :D
I tried Hermes Terre Eau Intense Vetiver. It includes sichuan notes. It is wonderful!! 😍😍😍
I'm using Szechuan Pepper micro leaves in my restaurant very pungent very numbing less biter than the peppers which I also use I feature it in the firefighter warriors dish only for the strongest of them all my stuff think it should come with release forms
In Indonesia we call andaliman
Parmentiera (Parmentiera edulis)
Pepper looking fruits that dangle from the tree's trunk but are sweet!?
This is the "soul" of many dishes! Put it on top of fish/meat and pour some sizzling oil, man, I'm hungry!
i like to describe this as "it's like what you'd imagine it feels like, when you chew a coin cell battery"
I love your shirt! I love that shop..
LOL - at least you tried it and learned something... CITRUS??
If you think that spice tastes disgusting on its own, you should taste the Szechuan beef jerky!
Jared try soncoya if you get the chance its another rare annona from mexico. Also im hoping the keitt you ate ate has a video review in the future id love to hear your thoughts on it.
I'd love to try more annonas. They are such interesting fruits. Yes! The Keitt will be showing up in a future video.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH BUDDY ILL BE WAITING FOR THAT PUMPED! its probably one of my favorite mangoes easily.
Was literally just researching this last night. Where can you source seeds/plants from?
The only way I know how to describe the taste of this pepper is by saying it's kind of like sticking your tongue on a battery.
One of my favorite Sichuan pepper love from india 🇮🇳
We have a type of fruit called pipa in China. They are super delicious. Hope to see you eat that soon
Please somebody know how to grow the Szechuan pepper?
I have had the dried stuff and it has a weird sensation on your tongue and saliva, but then my tongue goes numb. Does the green stuff do that?
The whole plant does it as far as I know.
This is hilarious 😆
And now you know why they're sold dried, and have to be pan-roasted with salt to get their best effect.
the all Batak (Indonesia) traditional food to use 'Andaliman' Sichuan pepper'
Looks interesting lol
I wonder what it would taste like after eating a miracle fruit?
I would love to try that actually
I have some red ones i will try tonight with miracle fruit
You should say Sichuan
Closer related to white sapote than to citrus
Can the dried berries be sown to grow a tree?
You don’t eat lot just 5 or 6 PCs for red meat dish only
Hahah the review is entertaining, he is like yh no yh no
Where did you get the seed? Would love to grow a plant?
I have a lot of seeds
Its Timur. Nepalese pickle ingredent
Its origin frm china
Indonesia also have sinchuan papper, in bataknesse (indonesia) call andaliman
Di Indonesia itu andaliman rasa pedas dan getir. Kami suka Batak suka dengan andaliman untuk masakan ikan
those aren't even ripe yet... they get much stronger when red and burst from the seed. (also don't eat the seeds, they are just gritty and bland)
Well of course it is going to taste bad. Its a flavoring for other food. Its too strong to eat on its own.
Dude, only is the husk to be used as a spice. The seed is discarded and makes some folk quite sick.
Neat
I love it
In Indonesia We call it andaliman
More "ma" than "la".

*cough cough* ruclips.net/video/np460MQtqEo/видео.html
Haha I was just about to say "Um yes he would and did!" Lol

Some ladies like vibrating tongues 😉 haha

I knew those disgusting fingers couldn't be yours!
Is Szechuan = Andaliman?
Yes they where they same kak . It is look different shape some how like chily there is different look but same spicy. What we have andaliman in sumatra secuan from Thai it looks more round and fat.
I think they are from neighboring regions and same genus
