I had a similar issue with a very expensive 40gbit network card as your 1080 issue, problem for me was one of the small signal capacitors on one of the pcie lanes had been broken off... you should see some absolutely tiny ceramic capacitors in pairs near the PCIe connector, check and see if one got broken off... took a cap off a broken gpu and replaced it, started working perfectly fine after that!

I have the same RedDragon KB myself but I got in on Amazon for 30€ (White & Gray variant with Red switches). Also found a bag of 30 gateron yellow switches for 5€. Although the pins are different if I spend some time filing them they do fit (currently using only one for the right control and shift buttons)

In Scotland, I am able to build the Ryzen 5 3600 paired with the RX 6650xt in either the B450m (asrock) or MSI 550 with 16gb of ram and a 750w psu and get them out the door for a sell price £450 all day. The 1660 scares me a bit for under performing in high settings on newer titles and still cost a mint here which makes no sense compared to better performing GPUs.
    Great builds and finds mate.

The 1080 will be fractured on the PCB near the PCI support where the motherboard slot clip goes into. That generation did that it snapped a few traces in the board around that point and stopped them fully working. That would be why it works in x4 slot. Essentially first half of the pins would be used for x4 the rest are broken at a point between pin and where they need to go (snapped near that clip/support) You can use a multimeter and points on the card i think to confirm this with a continuity test but might need to scratch away some of the coating to expose traces.
I often find those with the higher end parts are decent, usually if they were original owners they have allot of money and are just chill with returns and giving discounts as its less meaningful to them and they want shot of the hardware. The people you really have problems with are the more poor types who are desperate for cash, they are always difficult to return stuff to. I find you get some proper good higher end deals more than lower end ones because of this. I have showed up so many times to buy a higher end product and just had loads knocked off the value (and often also got other things while there) My biggest tell on how a deal will go these days is simple, it's the area they are living in and the value of the housing.

It's been age since I last saw an used 10th gen board, but 11gen boards are still pretty much everywhere.

Would you be down to getting some used cases too? There are a lot of old, and "aging" cases that are still super useful, like Corsair's 4000/5000D and cases like that. Even here in the developing world I've found them for a bargain. Could be a hell of a tool to help flip PCs with more hungry components as they have high airflow, not to mention the incredible aesthetics and usability since they are so versatile and really make RGB stand out and options for big liquid coolers.

I recently had a similar story. A few kilometers away from me, someone had an INNO3D RTX 2060 6GB on the second-hand market for 120€.
I wrote to him and offered 100€. He said that was too little for him so we agreed on 110€. We agreed that I could pick up the graphics card from him the next day.
Then the next morning he wrote to me that he had another interested party who had offered him more. I then kindly pointed out to him that we had a verbal purchase agreement. He then wrote back, somewhat offended, but sold me the graphics card as agreed. When I was at his house, he told me that the other bidder was a scam. When I got back home and took a closer look at the graphics card, I discovered on the sticker on the back that the guy had sold me an RTX 2060 with 12GB VRAM from July 2022 as RTX 2060 6GB. Sometimes you have to be lucky

I wonder why only gen1 x 16. It sounds like all 16 lanes are working - there is logic on the card that tells the MB how many lanes it has, which seams to say 16 lanes -, so why is it having trouble with higher gen speeds. I would wash the card in case there is contamination causing minor shorts. Also check for damaged components.

The GTX1080 might have some VRAM issues since it still works fine on GEN1 which doesn't push them hard enough might be fixable with a bios editor with crappier timings like the Chinese No Names GPU's sold in Aliexpress that is how the are able to recycle heavily mined on GPU's by putting the chips and VRAM on a new PCB but gives them lower timings and pass them off as "BRAND NEW" just to get them running stable enough to be sold the performance drop is negligible enough that it would pass off as margin of error during testing.

@@MarcoGPUtuber Thank you. I'll definitely try with some painter's tape later on in my test bench.
Reminds me of another tech channel, Budget Builds Official. He had a HD7000 type card. The literal PCIe lanes were snapped off to fit into a smaller slot. Worked shockingly well. Guess this follows the same principle.
Gonna look up the pin layout on this GTX 1660 Super too. See if Pin 81 is needed. Thanks again. :)

      @grizzlyindustries7593 6 месяцев назад

@@MarcoGPUtuber Hey Marco. Long update here. Lot of words, but if your intetested. I tested my varibles and have come up with something interesting.
I did the tape mod. Didn't work in any of my systems. I did a half lane for x8 tape. Then exposed pin 81. Then exposed pin 81 and 82.
Now, I have two test systems.
One, a i5-3570k, 3x4gb DDR3 1600mhz(I have 4x4gb sticks yet the motherboard either has one bad dimm slot or a bad CPU. Pins on motherboard are all fine.) AsRock Z77M Fatality Professional board. Seasonic 750 Modular Gold PSU.
Second and better test bed. Dell Precision T3400 with x3323(LGA771 Xeon equivalent to Q6600), 3x2gb DDR2 667mhz, same PSU.
Now I have been testing a PNY Single Fan GTX 1660 Super which has mostly been glitching due to what I think was overheating in it's past life with it's previous owner. Believe the memory, core, or both has been dieing causing major glitching yet no crashing. Cleaned it very throughly with even tech bathing it. Used my heatgun which I only use very rarely. This helped the card live longer and not glitch for a short while. Yet, the glitches returned. Redid all my usual inspections. Never really fixed it.
So, I want to also throw out. I not only use Windows 10 and 11. I always have used Linux as long as Windows. I also have been using multiple Linux distros cause from January to February. I helped my buddy build and sell older 2nd to 4th gen prebuilts into ultra budget Linux machines. Mainly being Chimera OS or HoloISO.
I have been trying this GTX 1660 Super in Windows were the issues happen. Yet, each and every time I have tried booting this GPU in not only my test benchs but the prebuilts. Linux wouldn't display or ever start whether it being live or a fresh install from Fedora to Mint to Debian to Ubuntu. Which was strange.
Now, while doing the tape mods. The GPU was detected or even displayed. Tried using the first test bed. Then route through the i5-3570k iGPU. Used Windows with no drivers to preinstalled drivers. Then Linux. Nothing. No display.
The second test bed though. I could never get Windows to detect or display. Then I used Linux. Same thing.
*Then I took the tape off.*
Put it back into my second system. Using LMDE OS. A Linux Mint Debian live USB.
The GTX 1660 Super is displaying and working.
Now, I am going to have to get back to redoing my test. Cause I have no idea why it is displaying after putting on and removing tape.
I have only been running video from an external storage drive for about 2 hours. Yet, this is a major improvement. I have had no glitching til now.
I'm gonna need to come back to testing later. But, I theorize that I shorted some pins on the GTX 1660 Super with the tape mod that might've franksteined itself.
Then again, LMDE along with many other Linux distros are lightweight. And LMDE comes preinstalled with nouvea drivers rather than nvidia which can be installed later for testing.
I've got more work and testing cut out for me. But I want to thank you for telling me about the tape mod. Cause either though it didn't work. It has brought about something shocking to me, yet a great development. Just getting it to post. Run in Linux. Then play videos with zero glitches and artifacting is amazing.
Thank you for showing me the tape mod. I have plenty of others systems as well. Many low end GPUs laying around. Only this GTX 1660 Super has been the weirdest and worst one that I will never sell or give away. But I'm hoping to get small basic usage out of it like as a personal HTPC's GPU. Hoping it works. Thank you for the suggestion.

    2080 (PNY) - $160

@@X_irtz Just Ethereum. I've been mining Ironfish with my 3070ti just fine. The EVGA are great, the 3070ti FE, though, I had to add cooling to the back, literally, thermal padded a 3 inch by 1in aluminum heat sink on the back, themal pads under the back plate, upgraded thermal pads on the front, and thermal paste, otherwise ETH made it thermal throttle. Been running them all for years at easy temperatures.
Great miners take better care of their GPU's than gamers. Staying warm, versus hot, and cold, back and forth of gaming, not gaming is harder than a more or less continuous temperature.

@@tradingnichols2255 I am aware of that. Miners typically also undervolt their cards, thus they tend to consume less wattage and less wattage means less silicon wear. The 7900x3d sucks. It cuts its cores in half to utilize the 3Dvcache. So even though it’s marketed as a 12 core processor it’s really a 6 core CPU in real world tasks.

    • @techluvin7691
      @techluvin7691 6 месяцев назад

@@ZackSNetwork You are completely wrong. The 3D vcache is only on one CCD and not the other. That is the only difference. Games will use the CCD that has the vcache although there are some issues with games choosing the wrong CCD (WITHOUT VCACHE). Do you even have one? If you did you would know that it does have those cores by running Cinebench R23. Perhaps you did not have the CPU configured correctly in bios. Do your homework before you trash a CPU.
