- Joanna Macy (born May 2, 1929), is an environmental activist, author and scholar of Buddhism. She lives in Berkeley, California, near her children and grandchildren and is the author of twelve books.
She is an international spokesperson for anti-nuclear causes, peace, justice, and environmentalism, most renowned for her book, Coming Back to Life: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World and the Great Turning initiative, which deals with the transformation from, as she terms it, an industrial growth society to what she considers to be a more sustainable civilization. She has created a theoretical framework for personal and social change, and a workshop methodology for its application. Her work addresses psychological and spiritual issues, Buddhist thought, and contemporary science, and helps people transform despair and apathy into constructive, collaborative action. In 2002, Joanna was invited to teach a workshop on Salt Spring Island, by Maureen Wild and Judith Bradley. On May 4th, she also gave a public talk, with support from the SS Conservancy, the United Church and local volunteers. At Gulf Islands SS, a full house of Salt Springers gave her a warm welcome. Her inspiring talk is conveyed in this video recording of the event and is a tribute to the enduring wisdom she has to share. A message as apt today as it was then.

At Minute 4 Joanna Macy talks of Nicholas of Cusa the 15th century Cardinal who said "God is an infinite sphere whose center is everywhere." So Joanna is saying the center of the universe is wherever you are, and the center of the great turning from an industrial society that is unsustainable to a sustainable society is where you are. Should we define a (science based) God as "that which set the laws of science in this universe, and that which established consciousness in people and the other beings which have consciousness"? Then we might know how to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C. To limit global warming to 1.5 degrees C is to not emit any CO2 or greenhouse gases we cannot sequester. That means we must live as hunter gatherers like Jesus recommended when he said "lay not your treasures up on earth where rot and (the fungus) rust doth corrupt and thieves break through and steal." Or we can live like the farmers of Bhutan who sequester all of their CO2 emissions in their forests. If we must live as farmers sequestering our CO2 emissions, then nuclear weapons workers cannot make nuclear weapons because they are not sequestering their CO2 emissions. How can we convince nuclear weapons workers that they must take the money designated for maintaining and developing nuclear weapons, and spend that money on safely storing nuclear weapons, and take that money and use it to take CO2 out of the atmosphere as recommended by the Foundation for Climate Restoration and Kiss the Ground. This will be a challenge, for the nuclear weapons workers are sure we need to defend ourselves with nuclear weapons, when our CO2 emissions budget does not give us the CO2 emissions to maintain these nuclear weapons.
