The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug Movie Description:
Bilbo (Martin Freeman) and his companions continue their journey east and brave many dangers on their way to the Lonely Mountain, culminating in an encounter with the fearsome dragon Smaug.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is a 2013 epic high-fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson and produced by WingNut Films in collaboration with New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. Warner Bros. Pictures served also as the distributor and is the second instalment in the three-part film series based on the novel The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien. The film was preceded by An Unexpected Journey (2012) and followed by The Battle of the Five Armies (2014); together they operate as a prequel to Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy.
The film follows the titular character Bilbo Baggins as he accompanies Thorin Oakenshield and his fellow dwarves on a quest to reclaim the Lonely Mountain from the dragon Smaug. The film also features the vengeful pursuit of Azog the Defiler and Bolg, while Gandalf the Grey investigates a growing evil in the ruins of Dol Guldur. The ensemble cast includes Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Benedict Cumberbatch, Evangeline Lilly, Lee Pace, Luke Evans, Ken Stott, James Nesbitt, and Orlando Bloom.
Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro wrote the screenplay. The films were shot simultaneously in 3D at a projection rate of 48 frames per second, with principal photography taking place around New Zealand and at Pinewood Studios. Additional filming took place throughout May 2013.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug premiered on 2 December 2013 in Los Angeles and was released internationally on 11 December 2013 in both conventional and IMAX theatres. The film received mostly positive reviews and has grossed over $959 million at the worldwide box office, surpassing both The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, making it the fourth highest-grossing film of 2013.

THIS IS A REUPLOAD! BECAUSE I ACCIDENTALLY DELETED THE VIDEO. THE REASON IT TOOK ME SO LONG TO REUPLOAD IT US BECAUSE I HAD RE EDIT THE WHOLE DAMN VIDEO, AND I DIDN'T KNOW HOW BECAUSE I DELETED ALL THE ASSETS ON THIS PROJECT. SO I HAD AN IDEA TO DOWNLOAD MY FULL REACTION OFF PATREON AND RE EDIT IT FROM THAT AND IT WORKED.
ay man appreciate that you would go that far for our entertainment
Oh! I thought it was taken down for copyright or smth haha
Hey did RUclips remove the witch ?
The fact that smaug was one of the smallest dragons is insane
that's like saying Viserion is insane, when compared to Belarion the Dread
He's no Ancalagon.
Compared to Ancalagon, Smaug was the size of one of his toenails.
Dude was the size of a MOUNTAIN.
He wasn't one of the smallest dragons
To be fair, in the TolkienVerse, Middle Earth started out just crazy magical and by the time the Third Age rolled around, everything was considerably weaker and more mundane. Smaug was large for the Third Age but was nothing compared to older Wyrms
The rings had only a small influence over the dwarves, essentially making them greedier is probably the simplest way to put it.
"A small influence over the dwarves"...well yea 🤣
32:37 that's an elves light my dude. I didn't just do that for dramatic effect. When you get poisoned by Morgul whatever, you start turning into a wraith, which is made of darkness, so beans of light like the elves tend to affect you a lot more than normal people. So he's seeing the light that all else have in them, the light of valinor
He kinda forgot Arwen had the same around her when she showed up in "Fellowship", I guess.
Elves and their beans of light... silly vegans lol
@@kingjellybean9795 that's a lot coming from king jellybean. 🤣
@@phousefilms yea who knows. Or he just doesn't know about it. I've been listening to the men of the west channel, going from the very beginning. Y'all should check it out if you like lord of the rings. I'm listening to the chronological timeline.
In Fellowship, Frodo could see the glowing form of Glorfindel as it appeared in the wraith-world (Glorfindel replaced by Arwen in the film), which is indeed the light of Valinor coming from within them, as you said. The elves of the Noldor, or 'high elves', such as Glorfindel and Galadriel, brought the light of Valinor with them back to Middle-Earth, and walk in both realms of reality simultaneously, therefore appearing within the wraith-world as glowing beings. However, the Silvan / Sindarin elves or Mirkwood, or 'dark elves', never left Middle-Earth and never lived under the light of the Trees of Valinor, and therefore would not emit the light of Valinor from within the wraith-world. Therefore giving her the same glow as Arwen doesn't make much sense within the lore, but then again, the Hobbit films have made many changes, additions and subtractions from the lore in their adaptation to the screen... so I guess it doesn't really matter, and in this version of the story; "all elves glow to people in the wraith-world." *shrug*
36:57 you do realize this is one book Mel? They split one book between three movies. So of course it's not going to be as action-packed as if they put it into one. But also you're watching the extended versions. So there's going to be a lot that wouldn't have been in with the theatrical version. Like we never knew what happened to thrain in the theatrical version.
But from what I remember a lot of people enjoyed what you're disliking. Some people like the story and not just straight up action sequences all the time. You might find it boring but a lot of it was part of book. Minus tauriel. She was added only for the movie. And people of the book actually enjoyed it
I just watched the whole Trilogy this past weekend. I noticed that this trilogy works best if you see it as one movie. Every of the LOTR movies has a beginning and an end, even though the main story is "divided" in all three. The Hobbit movies are not like that: the first movie has an introduction, in this one doesn't have an introduction and it doesn't have an end. I see it like this.
The idea of the romance is not that bad, but they tell it really badly in these movies.
But I've a crush on Evangeline Lilly since Lost, so I can't exactly blame Kili...
Fun fact: Shelob's not actually a Spider. She's a demon in spider form.
nah she is, she’s descended from ungoliant, the original giant spider who even sauron’s boss was afraid of
I thought that was the case with all spiders
I love the Hobbit movies more than Lord of the Rings. I mean they're classics for sure and I'll watch them whenever, but the Hobbit films just resonated with me more for sure. I love the Dwarves and the getting to see more of some of the classic characters at the same time. Kili & Fili and Dwalin are my favorite dwarves though they are all great! The CGI I thought was really good, and the romance between Kili and Tauriel was beautiful. It didn't feel forced to me, I loved getting to know some of the dwarves a little better throughout the trilogy. Idk man, I think they're great films and even though it kinda hurts my heart a little that you don't seem to like them nearly as much as LOTR, I understand to each their own. Thanks for watching them anyway. At the very least I'm glad when people give things a chance.
on the ending: i heard a story of one audience member at the theater shouted out, "F**k you Peter Jackson!" for leaving it on such a cliffhanger!
The part with Thorin getting his back on fire was a pointless scene to me at first, until I realized it was a way to show his mind was back to reality. I mean, wouldn’t being slightly scorched bring you back to sanity for the time being lol
From what I remember about watching the production of these movies; Richard Armitage HATED the outfit he had in those scenes, to the point where directors made a scene that would allow him to ditch the shaggy coat.
I agree though, that whole sequence was unnecessary, but once you know the reason behind it: it’s funny as all hell.
Smaug is the greatest dragon of the Third Age. He’s small compared to Ancalagon the Black, but, to keep it simple, Satan specifically created Ancalagon to fight against the Greek gods. Smaug was NOT created for that purpose.
Smaugussy
There are no Greek gods in the lord of the rings pal.. what kind of crack are you smoking??? And it wasn’t Satan, it’s melkor(morgoth.)
The bear or man beast,is called a "Skin changer" and only affliction he has is his inherited to change from man to beast and back again. The Orges used to catch and watch them turn on each other as a form of sport. I mean can you imagine your brother or sister changing than killing your family 😢😢? It's pretty terrifying 😭🤕
The romance of the elf and the dwarf is not in the original Tolkien book. Tolkien features very few female characters, and Peter Jackson also woven female characters and romance into the film because of the balance of the story. Also, the film is surprisingly book-like.
The Dwarves used their Rings to establish their fabled treasure hoards (which in turn attracted dragons),
but Sauron, according to portions of the Silmarillion, was unable to force the Dwarven bearers to submit to his will.
Indeed, the rings did not even turn them invisible; and the Dwarves were immune to some of the rings' more detrimental effects.
It is believed that the Dwarves' natural hardiness, and the fact that it was only the more powerful Dwarf lords who possessed them,
made them resistant to Sauron's control. While it is not directly stated,
the Rings possibly gave the Dwarf lords who wielded them an increased life span.
The net effect of these rings was to bring vast wealth to the wearer and cause him to become extremely greedy, which ultimately led to the wielders' ruin.
Any reason the ring affect Gladriel so badly? Cause the scene with her and frodo even frighten me as a kid, back than 😢
@@jebVlogs556 The One Ring contained a great part of Saurons powers.
And his most powerfull trait was to deceive and corrupt.
The more powerfull the bearer, the more corrupt they become.
And Galadriel, only daugther of Finarfin
and niece of Fëanor,
the Creator of the Silmarils, was one of the
oldest and most powerfull living Elves
( ca 8300 years old
~ 2000 years older than Elrond ).
@@Ugramosch Only the dwarves' and men' rings were corrupted. The elves only used them as long as Sauron was not using the One Ring
@@Ugramosch I remember that even Gandalf had a ring as well 🤔👐
@@Ugramosch didn't they have a rule that they Gandalf,Saurman,Raidagahast, and the two blue wizards couldn't go full on angelic mode on sauron?
Mel 'I tell you in Middle Earth pulling an Elf is probably the hardest thing you could do'
Aragorn 'Bet'
The things you called out - the dwarf-elf sexual tension, the mayor and his bs - were NOT in the book.
The crazy camera movements in the Tower near Mirkwood were gorgeous in 3D in the theater. In fact, that's what i loved about it. The 3D immersion into that world.
"They set claiming Mirkwood" is f*cking hilarious hahaha
Your Tolkein knowledge is very attractive! I loved your reaction and I'm so glad you're watching this series. The river fight scene was ridiculous but so very entertaining 🤣
Oh hey does anyone else remember that in The Fellowship Of The Ring somewhere at the start of it Frodo & Gandalf are riding a carriage together & gandalf actually mentions Smaug he doesn't say the name but he does say something about a dragon
The spiders are Shelob's children.
Thanks for the reupload..I have been waiting for this one for a long time. Thanks Mell!
You know the Beijing Olympics, it was the Desolation of Smog.
From What I understand the ending of this film was cut short mainly because the studio did not want to give Peter Jackson more time in the theaters originally all three films were supposed to be condensed into one film but they forced him to cut it that’s why the ending is cut so short the hobbit was supposed to originally be a 4/5 hr movie that’s why there’s so much filler when the studio made him break the movie apart into 3 films he had to come up with newer conflicts/scenes on the fly like the elves fighting and the people in the towns it’s sucks that they interfered with the movies production but that is the truth the reason why there’s two one they assume no one wants to watch a long movie 2 they can increase ticket sales if the film is broken up into three parts
Originally, I think it was supposed to be only two, before it got made into a trilogy by the demands of WB.
@@phousefilms ahhh ok
I always say fuck warner bros for what they did
Peter Jackson has pugs, that's why they have a little cameo :)
glad to have this reaction back XD love this trilogy - my fav version is the Tolkien Edit where it's more faithful to the book story beats, making it more like 2 movies length
Oh YEAH, been waiting for this one
I love me some Radagast, as he loves animals and is introverted. Also, Thranduil, as he's so magnificent lol
The barrel scene was filmed in Nelson. This was the last place in NZ my family visited before coming back to Australia when I was younger. It brought back a lot of childhood memories of that beautiful country.
@@styles9956 kayaking down the river as kids. Side note, the majority of the orcs were Maori. A mate was an extra and retired on the Goldie after all the movies were done. When I go back to rewrite my family book of descent, I am going to the south island to see Hobbit town. That region is really cold but extremely beautiful.
Sauron didn't make the Three, nor did he ever touch them. The Three were made to preserve and nurture, but they too were under the domination of the One. While Sauron wore the One, the Elves did not put their rings on. Thrain's Ring, while still made with the assistance of Sauron was given by the lord of the Elven Smiths to Durin III of Moria, as there was great friendship between those two realms. The Dwarves were made by Aule to resist all domination, but the Rings made them greedy and angry when they couldn't get gold. As Thror said, "this ring needs gold to breed gold" and there was precious little of it in their exile from Erebor.
None of the rings of Power except for the One were made by Sauron. The rings were made by Celebrimbor, the great Smith of the Second Age("Shadow of Morder"and "Shadow of War"went into his backstory a bit more.)
@@phousefilms But Sauron had a hand in making them in his guise of Annatar
@@phousefilms Those games took many liberties with the lore, though. Celebrimbor forged the Nine and the Seven with the direct aid and assistance of Sauron, while his art and knowledge of crafting and ring-lore (Sauron was originally a maia under the Aule the Smith, a vala) meant he also indirectly helped Celebrimbor forge the Three. This meant that when Sauron forged the One, all the other rings of power were tethered to it, which was his design from the beginning. That connection went both ways with the Three, however, and as soon as Sauron put on the Ruling Ring, the elves were instantly aware of Sauron's true form and of his evil thoughts and designs, and they removed their rings and hid them, knowing that they would reveal their own works, designs and locations to Sauron as long as he had the One. Only when the One Ring was lost to Sauron were the elves free to use the Three in the building and maintaining of their realms, and once the One Ring was destroyed so too was the power of the Three, being the final act in the diminishing of the elves in Middle-Earth, the departure of the Ring-bearers from the Grey Havens, and the beginning of the dominion of Men.
Gladerial has one of the Elven rings. Elrond his the second one. I think either Celeborn or the Elves gave their third ring to Gandalf. As for the Dwarf ring bearers, I heard some got killed by Dragons or maybe the Balrog killed them.
To my knowledge 3 were claimed by Sauron and the other 4 were eaten by dragons
@@femoman those are the Dwarf rings. There are only 3 Elf rings
"Fuck you Radagast, damn birds" xDDD
37:21 well that was mostly done because it's merry and Pippin singing it
9:50 “The gon be meeting pretty soon…”
I mean, several decades certainly is “soon” by elf standards.
11:00 Yeah, pulling an elf as a non-elf is hard. Can you imagine marrying someone whose lifespan compared to yours might as well be that of a fruit fly?
as far as I remember the soundtrack for 2 and 3 films the hobbit was performed by Billy Boyd (he played Pippin)
Old exposition dwarf balin is the one in the tomb. The short dwarf oin was the skeleton next to the tomb in the Lord of the rings the fellowship of the rings
Legolas and Taruiel were not it the book. Tauriel is not even a real character from the books. They were forced into the Hobbit movies to justify making it into another trilogy. The Hobbit could have been done in 2 movies. But, I still like these movies overall. Bad cg dependance, but still fun.
Long story short the Rings given to the dwarfs made them greedy asf which basically was their fall from grace. Moria and The Lonely mountain were lost because of greed. Humans = dead bitch. Elves felt it real fast and took them off. In a nutshell.
Bomber doesn't have to out run the bear, just the others. Lol
I would love for them to show ancalagon one day. Makes Smaug look like a newborn and Smaug was a G himself lol
I love how everyone hated this trilogy. And gives the fuck up Amazon made a free pass
In the theater I went to, there was a collective boo at the cliffhanger ending.
I have always thought thranduil knew bilbo was there and only went along with the she elf because he thought he was wrong.
I liked this the most out of the 3 .. Smaug was awesome .
Benedict Cumberbatch was the voice of Smaug and the Necromanser.
thank you for this! wanted to watch all 3 reactions in one sitting but saw this one was nowhere to be seen lmao.
appreciate the re upload and hope to see some more LOTR reactions in the future.
To answer your question about the spiders: the reason they were depicted as utterly evil monstwrs is because Tolkien got bitten by one as a toddler, and for the rest of his life he was deathly afraid of them.
5:28 Yeah. He's sort of like R'Tas 'Vadum like that. Always leaving right before things start getting extra dangerous (though it's not exactly either of their intent to abandon their allies in THAT sort of manor. They're both just needed elsewhere)
lmfao Exposition Dwarf.
Hearing Mello talk total trash to all the classic Tolkien villains just makes my day!
Hoping you will check out the animated version. It's pretty entertaining and a bit of nostalgia for old people like me
Lol me too but not because of nostalgia per se. My brother to this day will go "he's frodo of the nine fingers, and the ring of dooooommmmm!" until I wanna just punch him when we see each other🤣
Cool mello yeah really like this trilogy battle of five armies kicks ass
I remember the Rankin Bass Hobbit flick, you should check that out.
I remember someone told me that they added the elf/dwarf romance cause they thought it was too much of a sausage fest XD don't know if that's true but I believe it...
I swear he already uploaded this?
You should read up on dragon lore. I'm a D&D player and it's books go very deep into it.
Dragons are extremely intelligent, magical and can use magic.
Smaug is an ancient red dragon, so that means his intelligence score is 18 ..... the average intelligence score for a human is 10.
I cant wait for his reaction to battle of five armies
Hello Mellverse I have to say your channel is freaking awesome and are gonna watch mortal kombat 1995?
You should watch the Animated version of The Hobbit which came out in 1977. I loved it.
its terrible
Next The Hobbit Extended Edition Of The Battle Five Armie Extended Edition
Already out. This is a reupload.
This was the extended version (?). I don’t remember a lot of this and I’ve seen it a few times a year. So there’s the 40 minutes you would cut.
I personally want it longer and just the book story.
Smaug heading to lake town 😢
And those people haven't fought a dragon in 30-40 years, they are completely unprepared 🤕
At least Mel got to watch the third one right away. For me, that cliffhanger punctuated with "I See Fire"made me go "NOOOO!!!!" in theatres.
To be real, LEGALOS AND THE ELVES SAVED THIS MOVIE !!!
26:59 and thats what makes Smaug dangerous. He may not be larger but intelligence can take one far. Its also why i prefer the LOTR dragons compared to Game of Thrones. Dragons are amongst the top apex mystical predators and intelligence is important to have.
I don’t remember the scene with Thrain
Smaug= Benedict= dr. Strange= Sherlock, ie impressive dragon.
Yes the elf and the dwarf thing was so unnecessarily added
Kind of crazy - the best parts were lifted from the book, the worst parts were largely the filler they added in (in order to make it a trilogy).
wish Gollum was in this movie and the next one.
30:56 Keep him in place. This is going to hurt
11:30 the romance between an elf and a dwarf never happened in the Hobbit book. Or any other book by Tolkien to my knowledge.
Legolas and the lady elf weren’t in the hobbit book.
When I first saw the movie on the day it came out, I didn’t like all the added warfare which was not in the book. Movie studios have to sell tickets so they added all that for boys and young men.
Also, the dwarves were sealed inside the wine caskets in the book. They would not have floated staying open like that.
Also, there were no attacking orcs on the way to lake town or any of the rest of the book after Moria.
Can someone tell me if he reacted to more of the fellowship of the ring? I can't find his reactions to two towers and return of the king but i see he reacts to the hobbit. I am confused
He will probably get to the other two movies he probably has other movies planned in the mean time though
@@SammieSora Oh okay. thank you for the answer
@@MyGoldenShadows no problem
If Bilbo doesn't spare Smeagle than they lose in LOTR and If Smaug is not killed they would have most likely lost in LOTR.
Laying your head on a bag of walnuts is more comfortable than you think
If it was an action/fantasy movie it had a 3D version (Except Harry Potter?). Meaning you had to have rollercoaster camera views.
I really enjoyed your commentary.
But, I thought you all ready did this a few months ago. Feels like ya re-upload this video.
It is a reupload, he accidentally deleted his first one of DOS.

21:23 Gandalf speaking "Black Speech." He does that also in fellowship of the ring and it kinda frightens Lord Elrond the High Elf that rules the lands there 🤕☄..
There's about 3 white Orges: The Defiler who got his arm cut off by Thereon, and the son who you eventually see fighting Legolas in Lake town (and he's a beasst!!!! With metal literally skin "crafted in his chest, back, shoulders and legs)I believe he's missing an eye too. You'll see the other one orge in return of the king, and he seen literally side stepping a boulder from smashing him 😒✋
I’m 5 months late, but wasn’t there a white orc in the extended version of return of the king? Sam and Frodo are caught in a orc inspection, and the big orc inspecting was also white I believe.
That end in the theatres was a giant pissoff moment. You mention The Sopranos, at least that ending has meaning. This just felt like the studio wanted to milk the Hobbit book.
Your right, but in the end. I still enjoyed the movies. But it would be wrong for me to say they are better then the LOTR Trilogy.
The Witch reaction?
What do you mean sopranos ending… he’s going to lake town to kill everyone
Should react to Walking Dead
First time watching with camera I guess?
Did you read the book?
"They could have removed 30-40 minutes..."
There was about 2 hours of this one movie that wasn't in the book. 'The Hobbit' end to end is about half the length of any of the books in The Trilogy'.
In pursuit of the dollar they ruined 'The Hobbit' and attempted to make it into a prequel to The Trilogy. It wasn't. A true Hobbit movie might be two hours.
JRRT wrote 'The Hobbit' for his children who were in grammar school at that time.
Don't get me wrong. I liked the Hobbit movies. I'm just saying that very little of this series has anything to do with the writings of JRRT.
bro do reaction to four lions movie
Given that they stretch these tales out the elf/dwarf romance hardly matters. Both races live a long time, can't not try different things.
Kili and Tauriel's relationship is forced, but Legolas' appearance in this trilogy *isn't?* You're so eager to praise his appearance solely because you know his name and like LoTR, not because of the consistency of his character or the necessity of his appearance, or lack thereof.
Legolas is in The Hobbit because Peter Jackson needed a heart throb for the female viewers, since he was a hit with the ladies when LoTR originally dropped.
And even then, they still screwed up Legolas' portrayal. His character is completely different to what we see in LoTR, when the reality is that 60 years is the blink of an eye to an elf who's already 3,000 years old by the events of The Hobbit.
Thorin was supposed to look older than Balin, and Bard's most significant tie to the plot is that he shares blood with a character that got a grand total of about 8 seconds of screen time.
Lot of cracks in your logic here, Mell.
Gonna get neck problems one day
Bro I don’t understand the comments about the CGI, like I just saw the trilogy doing a rewatch and I can’t for the life of me see bad cgi, like ACTUAL BAD cgi nah, some iffy cgi shots yea sure especially in the 1st one, but like overall BAD cgi, I’ve seen actual bad cgi with 2023 movies😂
Benedict Cumberbatch's BTS video of doing motion capture for Smaug is better than the movie
That seems a bit exaggerated. But it was funny to see him crawling around lol
@@pogofgreed3707 well I don't think it's exaggerated:))
@@m.h706 I don’t think him crawling on all fours is better then a whole movie. But we all have our taste

The first movie is better only because of Gollum.
The one ring puts you closer to evil in like spirit form pretty much (I know there's a better explanation sorry) but it makes the user like connect more with dark creatures hence hearing them speak.
Yeah desolation was definitely my favorite. And beorn is a skin changer. Is this universe, werewolves are wolves that were filled with evil spirits to be controlled by morgoth and sauron.
7:23 at least it ain't ungoliant. That b**** makes shelob look like she's nothing not even A gust of wind

the romance didnt exist at first but warner made them record it after the movie was done, a lot of the bs in this movie was due to the studio's inteevention. that said, bard's children annoy me so much 😩 they could have gotten better child actors
I was not prepared to see Beorn again...my god the makeup and hair is just atrocious..
Also, the spiders of mirkwood are descendants of shelob, she mated with lesser spiders to create these offspring, as was done by her mother Ungoliant to give birth to shelob.
