  • I had a bunch of perfectly good dial up modems lying around, so I decided to do something with them. I've seen videos of other people getting ridiculously old computers onto the internet, but none that used a period accurate modem. So here you go.
The old computers connect through another computer set up as a "dial in server" The idea is that when you're away you can call up this server and connect like you were on your home network, kind of like VPN but over phone lines. The part I'm interested in is that it can share the internet connection.
This is supposed to be done over a telephone exchange, but I don't have a landline. Luckily it's possible to emulate one with just a few components - see alnwlsn.com/pr... for details
Other phone info can be found here:

Here's the tutorial I used to make the dialin server:
    ubuntuforums.or...
plus some additional Googling and much head scratching.
Also, people keep asking me for the background music - it is "the Brighton Beach Rag (1912)", or at least a midi version of it [alnwlsn.com/mi...]. I have no idea where I got the MIDI file from, but I looked into it and found the person who originally sequenced it is James Pitt-Payne of London UK, who has a site [groups.io/g/ja...] where he's been sequencing MIDI files for over 20 years!
