I don't think people understand how truly difficult it is to play at this level, be DEAD ON, and have it all be in one take from start to finish. So insane!
It's a super-wide lens used on the camera so it's a distorted image you're seeing. His drums aren't actually that far away. Also, we're not hearing exactly what he is hitting as the majority of the drums he is hitting are sampled which is why every snare and tom hit sounds exactly the same no matter how hard, or where on the skin, he hits.
+Sam Edmonds why would he put all the mics on everything then? Also he's always dead on with his accuracy, it's not surprising that his hits sound the same
Compression would achieve the same effect. He may quantise it a little just to polish due to this type of music needing to be flawless rhythmically. But i doubt its samples, just a good mix.

they're actually 32nds, not 16ths and they're actually pretty easy, they're just diddles (double strokes) but to do them that cleanly is pretty impressive, and at 140bpm that's really pushing the speed. the highest I can get clean 32nd note double strokes is around 120-130
