step 2: Get transcript or transcribe it yourself
step 3: Re-listen to the episode multiple times over time
step 4: Activities! choose one or several options. (put phrases in Anki, self-interview, role-play in the podcast, etc.)

The summary of this video :
    1. Listen to the episode once all the way through:
    • Don’t focus on details and individual words, and try just to get the main idea of the podcast.
    • It’s not a problem if you miss some words.
    • If you can’t understand anything from the podcast, then you should definitely look for something easier that suits your language level.
    2. Get transcript or transcribe it yourself.
    • It’s recommended to experiment both options, in order to diversify.
    • If you are a newbie and you look for something easy, getting the transcript is a great way to get started and it’s going to be much faster.
    • If you are intermediate/upper-intermediate, and you don’t care about the task difficulty and how much time the process will take, or just the transcript isn’t available, then you can transcribe it yourself. Transcribing the podcast will deeply boost your comprehension, but in this case, you need somebody to verify the transcript after you.
    • You should take note of every word, idiom, cultural references that seem to be interesting for you. You either write them down on a copybook or in some apps like Notion
    3. Re-listen to the episode multiple times over time.
    • It makes you able to understand the whole vocabulary used in the podcast and to get familiar with it, which will gave you such a gratifying feeling.
    • It’s a good activity to fill a dead time
    4. Activities! choose one or several options. (put phrases in Anki, self-interview, role-play in the podcast, etc.)
    • It’s done in parallel with step 3 with a slight delay.
    • You can incorporate your favorite vocabulary into flashcards (e.g Anki)
    • You can use podcast interview method, which consist in taking one of the conversation roles, and to speak for it, then practice being part of the conversation.
    • If you are a group of persons, you can turn it into a dialogue and practice it with each other.
    • You can just summarize the podcast and give the summary to your learning partners.
    5. Shadowing from mimicking the words to eventually emotion, rhythm, & intonation (when you get familiar with the material)
P.S: I'm an English learner, I hope that my writing is correct

Sending greetings and big hugs back to the whole Easy German team! 😄

But actually I should save the best ones for a (dead time) play list, so my brain remembers the sentences thoroughly and therefore these will be standby whenever the right situation occurs in a conversation. So simple but smart, many thanks!

Yup I use Easy German to help me with my simultaneous interpretation skills of German into English. Then also they are one of the best options for people learning a language all the way though a working intermediate level. On the other hand learning to improve dialectal forms of the German Language requires other strategies. Those though are in abundance on You Tube.
Yup I liked hearing you have that discourse with the people of Easy German yesterday. Well done by all of the participants.

I am so excited because I've wanted to learn languages for so long without really knowing the way to go - I went through babbel lesson for swedish and spanish, and started hungarian and persian courses - but I always felt like I was lacking some kind of method and that my learning was partial so I stopped because of frustration. I also took german classes in high school but could never maintain it, even though my level must have been close to B1 at least. The only language I was able to improve over time is english because I have been using it around native speakers and then kept reading, watching sows and integrating (but again, I had the problem of highlighting a lot of phrases but never creating a proper database). All your videos provide such a comprehensive and solid method that I feel like I'm now much better equipped to always know what I should do next to take it the the next level while maintaining what I know already. So grateful Robin, thank you so much!

An alternative to shadowing is what I tried to do in the past: watch films I'd seen many times and say the actors' lines with the same tone of voice, emotion ecc. I used to do a lot of reading books out loud for accent practice, then I wanted to try something new, so that's how I started with the film idea.

Another great video!! I also listen to the Easy German podcast but at this point I’m only able to have short bursts of knowing what’s going on then I’m lost again for a minute 😂. I am however pretty sure I’m at the level I can try this method with Korean and Mandarin so I’ll give it a go this weekend! Thanks 🙏

It's nice to find someone not pushing people to use podcasts when they don't have the right level!! I am just starting to reach that level, I do well with some podcasts and horrible with others. I finally stopped listening to people telling me what I should listen to! Your advice is much more sound than many other people.

Hello Robin, great video ! I was already doing some aspects that you spoke about , but highlighting repeated words was great to pick up on . I love highlighter pens and I think the person who invented them should have got the Nobel prize ! ...by the way, I use different colours for verb endings , then they stick out like a sore thumb !

May I ask you if you could please share with us what's your exact process to internalize those phrases? How many times you go through them? Is there a routine that we can all follow to move those phrases to our long term memory?

I was afraid about this method, well I'm still afraid... I've found many interesting podcasts and I've decided to improve my English by listening to podcasts. I've been studying English for over 6 months and I'm gonna finish my course so, I'll spend all my time with "input".
I just finished an episode of my favorite podcasts but... I can't put up 10 minutes, I have to take breaks every 10/15 minutes. My fatigue mental makes me feel as I was studying the whole.
Thank you so much, I'm gonna use this video as my guide to learn by listening to podcasts.

I am basically already doing a lot of this but I use google translate as my phrase capture tool when analyzing the text. As I am going through the material I grab what I want on the computer screen then dump it into google translate. That of course instantly provides a translation then I hit the phrasebook button. I like using that because it is just a quick one button push to capture what I want then I can focus on reading again quickly. After I accumulate enough in the phrasebook, I export it to a spreadsheet then feed that sheet into Anki. The problem is that I do not spend enough time reviewing the cards in my various Anki decks. Drilling with flashcards is not the most interesting activity but I know that it will really help my retention and I certainly need that.
