    In Europe those arcade 1up machines went from 300 euros to 800 euros in the shops. U always see them on sale and still no one buys them coz of the price. Arcade 1up has shot themselves in the foot with the silly price hike. 300 to 400 for standard editions and if they wanted to make a special edition, then 500 should be max, same as a console. Not 800+ for a machine that plays 3 or 4 games. Ridiculous

    I believe I’m their core demographic. Dads in their 40’s who are in the prime of their career with major nostalgia for these games and disposable income.
    Then came COVID and those of us WFH with the time and the desire for something new started filling our homes with these toys. From there, they continued feeding the beast by regurgitating these into legacy cabs with small incremental updates which kept the business booming.
    Eventually the nostalgia wore off, the community stopped getting baited into buying the same product over and over again, no new licenses (Conta, SmashTV, SF3, Alpha etc.) and we went back to the office. From there these things started collecting dust and weren’t worth the space they were occupying.
    In the end, the product and business model were too niche and their rapid growth was a direct result of timing and circumstance. Casual families and most importantly KIDS have zero nostalgia for these and therein lies your problem. I know this because I have kids here all the time and they couldn’t care less about my beautiful arcade collection. Factor in inflation, competition ie. mult-cades etc., disappointing product launches (MVC2 Online anyone?) coupled with the toxic community and you have the predictable downfall of A1U.

      I agree they grossly overestimated their market with covid. People were trapped in their houses, so this made way more sense and they were a more reasonable price. They have never been a premium product, as I would replace just about every part of the machines when I mod them. It's basically a shell for me to put whatever I want to in, but I wouldn't buy one for full price. There's so many used ones out there or other deals. I see no reason to pay full price.

    • @IamLegend32
      @IamLegend32 Месяц назад +19

      They were done way before that. The Nintendo MvC announcement had zero to do with it at all. There has always been a million different ways to play those MvC games, as well as every single game Arcade 1up released as a cabinet before. Playing on an arcade cabinet with joysticks vs playing on a Switch are two completely different experiences.

Arcade operators back in the day were able to purchase conversion/upgrade kits that usually were just a PCB and decals that an operator could've easily swapped out with an old board and give some new life to the cabinet itself. In regard to the Neo-Geo style of cartridge swapping, I'm not 100% sure on the legality of copying that system since Neo-Geo patented it way way back and it was the only major manufacturer that was doing it that way back in the day.

      It's cool to mod your Arcade1up, but here's the cons: It gets annoying to keep updating your PC software and securities every single day. If you don't update, your PC will run slow. You don't have to do it on the Pi and Odroid boards. Also, you have shut down your PC properly. If you don't, it'll corrupt your files. It's not like Arcade1up when you can safely shutdown by turning the on/off power switch. Worst of all, there's too much wirings that to have to removed the control deck bottom cover, if adding additional buttons. If you're not tech savvy who can solder wires and all, don't mod it.

    The footboard is to keep it from tipping forward.
    I wonder if they could inject more excitement into their products by using a more open architecture for their pcbs. Instead of a one use, custom pcb for every cabinet, use a universal pcb like an android box/raspi in every system, and just have different roms for every cabinet. The difference in cabinets would then come down to how many buttons and the types of controls, depending on the theme. It would save manufacturing overhead in the background, and give the users a more reliable and easier to upgrade experience.
