Nishizaki House, designed by Studio Cochi Architects, is a residence for a family of three located on reclaimed land in a newly developed residential area in southern Okinawa. The surrounding area features a mix of residential, commercial, and industrial zones, with the north side being quieter and the south side exposed to heavy traffic. The design challenge was to create a comfortable indoor environment that provides privacy and natural light while maintaining a distance from the city's chaos. The house features a rectangular design, with public rooms on the first floor and private rooms on the second floor. Courtyards and skylights are strategically placed to enhance natural light and airflow. The northern courtyard serves as a buffer from the dense neighborhood, while the southern courtyard provides a solid barrier from the town. Most furniture and fittings were crafted locally, highlighting the potential of local craftsmanship and reducing reliance on imported materials.
