What is the difference between invasive and non invasive ventilation?

  • Ventilator is a device used to support breathing. It is used when there is difficulty in breathing or when spontaneous breathing has stopped. Ventilator is an important life supporting device useful in many life threatening conditions.

    Thank you doctor for the information.Does the invasive ventilation cause discomfort to the patient when not in sedation?Does the patient need continuous sedation? How many days can a patient be put on a ventilator? normally?

      Thank you for your interest. Initially the person is sedated. But many tolerate it even when awake later on as the machine can synchronize with the person's own breathing effort. There are persons who even communicate by writing on a notepad while on ventilator. When long term ventilation is needed, a small hole is made in the wind pipe in the neck (tracheostomy) under local anaesthesia. Persons with disorders of the nervous system can be on ventilator for really long period, and still recover, even though meticulous care is needed.
