    Pippo was an incredible lyric tenor! In my opinion on par with Gigli. (Pavarotti told his father that he thought di Stefano was better than Gigli, and took a slap to the face!)
    That being said, I like Ettore Bastinini paired with Corelli or del Monaco in this duet!

    • @pippofan

      Undoubtedly Del Monaco and Corelli had bigger voice, but not the interpretive genius of Maestro Di Stefano. He brought more to the role than just a bigger voice.

    • @shicoff1398
      @shicoff1398 2 года назад +1

      Both Corelli, Tucker and MDM may be more dramatic spinto's in sound for the role and though Bergonzi managed it also, I must say GDS does a great job here being basically a more lyric tenor then they where, and as far as Bjoerling, he avoided it and probably wisely. I really like Bastianini of course and he also did it with Corelli, of course also the Combo of Warren and Tucker in the 1950's where America's contribution of greats but all in all this is wonderful.

    • @sugarbist
      @sugarbist 2 года назад +2

      @@shicoff1398 I don't particularly like Corelli in Forza. Tucker and Warren were terrific. Although Bergonzi was a fine tenor, he doesn't move me vocally or emotionally. JB was too smart to sing Forza.

    • @shicoff1398
      @shicoff1398 2 года назад +1

      @@sugarbist right Bjoerling was smart that way, avoided it and also both Chenier, Gioconda and never a Calaf live, but made the recording with Nilsson and Tebaldi late in his career, he died at age 49 in 1960.Bergonzi, beautiful style etc. not the Spinto heft up top that both Tucker and Corelli had, or of course the dramatic trumpet top of dramatic Mario Del Monaco, nobody can convince me that MDM wasn't a true dramatic tenor in his Otello days as I saw him sing it in Milan in house in 1959 and though I was only 19 years old, I do recall it very well. As with Tucker as far as voice size, MDM sounded better in house, but with MDM it wasn't just voice size, it was that his voice sounded less steely in house then on some of his London Label records of complete operas.

    • @shicoff1398
      @shicoff1398 2 года назад +2

      @@sugarbist I really like GDS here, even if he was basically a lyric tenor, and I saw him in house with Tebaldi in 1959 singing Tosca and he was still in excellent form, passionate and beautiful both, but by the mid 1960's he was less and less in great voice, I last saw him in 1974 with Callas, in their farewell together, that one at the Shrine in LA, Calif. but for me as far as Forza, I agree with you about Bergonzi and Corelli, in that role Tucker and Warren in the complete role, considering it all, where both my choice as #1, that was in the 1950's when they both owned it at the Met. Tucker then in prime voice and needed to be heard in house, for best advantage (as did MDM) . Corelli of course in Turandot for me, (rather then in Forza) had no equal live. Tenor Jussi Bjoerling . had his fineRCA recording with Nilsson in 1959, but no way would sing it live, he knew his limitations, and as Clint Eastwood said in his film " A man has to know his limitations" Bjoerling usually knew his very well and lasted well till he died at age 49, Sept. 9th. 1960.

    • @sugarbist
      @sugarbist 2 года назад

      @@shicoff1398 My father told me that Martinelli was less steely in the house as well.I also believe that MDM was a dramatic tenor, but poster Bodiliotto claims that MDM was a '' Lirico Pieno'', translated as a ''full lyric''. I truly don't know what that means. But, it really doesn't make a difference. All the great tenors were very effective in many performances regardless of the the few criticisms they receive here on You Tube.

On the contrary now I think the thought he is drawing down his capital adds extra frission, urgency, to the scene.
