Great review!! The original HE400S non stealth was my very first planar headphone and I couldn’t believe how excellent it sounded compared to anything even close to its price point. I still listen to it occasionally just for nostalgia’s sake and enjoy the easy going smooth sound it provides. It is the third HFM I have owned, and I can’t agree with you MORE about the sub par stock cables that come with their headphones. That’s why I never heard a nasty treble peak like you did because the first thing I do when I buy a new HFM is place their weird rubbery cables back in the box they came in and purchase a GOOD aftermarket cable. Works every time. The old model had the suspension headband as well, as I found your comments interesting about the hotspot the new headband causes. I enjoyed your review, excellent comments on the good and bad regarding this new version!!
I recently bought the HE400se on Amazon, used but in perfect condition for £70 and it is a stunning pair of planar headphones and much better than my 7hz Timeless planar Iems which cost £220. I would give a thoroughly 100% recommendation compared to any of the other more expensive HiFiman headphones at prices up to £600. They need plenty of power to drive and they are stunning when driven properly. IMHO they are better than the Sundara. The bass is very good when driven properly and the timbre and detail are a revelation tbh. The treble is very dependent on the amp you are using. Change the cable...
This is a very thorough review that go deep... I mean deeppppp in every corner of the headphone and is excellent for whom deciding to buy one like me. Thanks alot and I hope your channel will growth with your honest reviews.
I tested this over this past Winter. Sent it back. Kept the Sivga SV021 over this one. Tried the Sundara and the Ananda. Still have the Ananda. Again, Sivga all the way for me over this one. All ears are different, but for me, and the cash, the Sivga does some really excellent things. $109 on sale for this headphone however is a crazy good price!
I have the original silver cable and I find it pretty good, unlike many people who have a problem with it. I use mine with xDuoo MT-602 and they drive them well, pumping 1.3W @ 32 ohms.
I m gonna get mine today.. Tripowin pentacon cable and fiio k9.. I ve owned already the 400 se 1 year ago driving them with fiio k5 and send them back becouse they really need more power than fiio k5.. Lets give another try now..
Well I have to give you credit for suggesting an aftermarket cable. I bought a decent but cheap replacement and I simply CANNOT believe how much less peaky the treble is. It's not subtle. My set came with the newer, rubbery cable, which I'm going to destroy in an effort to improve the state of the human condition.
@@wavetheorysound Yes! I guess for $109 something has to give, but I would have thought it was just a too bright planar had I not seen your take, so thanks.
This is not a good dac amp, you had fomo due to hype past few months. Make sure to switch off the display, it will malfunction in a few weeks. Don't use low ohm headphones that require high current, it will clip and error out. The power figures listed are also false. Cheap dac amp that was over hyped in reviews.
@@utube9487 I'm talking about the new model Pro+ with 1.8W@32ohm and ESS9038Q2M Sabre chip, and not the old one Pro with 0.7W@32ohm and AKM chip. And there is no hype about the new one. You barely find any video reviews about it. But anyway, my point is to what you could possibly pair together with the HE400 SE within the range of 200$ as my response to the video. I know that even the DX3 Pro+ isn't the optimal unit to pair these headphones with, but feel free to suggest something else up to 200$. Because as WaveTheory also states in his review, what's the point of buying a 150$ headphone which needs an amp of at least double the price to match it with. It will automatically make this headphone a non affordable choice for most people.
I got a JDS Labs Element II Amp/Dac do you think i'll be abble to drive those HE400SE fine ? I'll not change cable i'll keep stock cable even if its trash so as u said i should expect to get an annoying treble peak ?
Innnn depth. Loved it. I literally uploaded my own review of them 3 days ago, I'd really appreciate you giving it a lewk, we agree in most things, but boy did I get a worse deal with the cable they gave me. I'd appreciate your like and subscription of you also like my style.
yup! they have the same drivers but just without the stealth magnets. the he400se just has a better headband and yoke. the newer batches of the he400se also have the same better cable now
Apos Audio has dropped their price of the HE400se to $109 as well! Link above in the description! It is an affiliate link.

A used old HE400 in ok condition is also good value though! around 100$ ... Regarding sound, and slam it's much for money ,EQ -3db 13-16Khz!!

Hi! nice Review! a question ... Can I handle it correctly with a Fosi SK01??

Great review!
Can fix the treble peek with a piece of tape over 2 of the magnets on each side.
I pair it with hip dac and a faaeal 4.4mm cable (14$). And I love the combo. Must get asgard soon. 😇

Glad to be of help. It almost makes you mad, doesn't it?

Drive them with a Topping DX3 Pro+ which costs almost the same (maybe a bit more) and you'll be just fine. Nice review btw!

Try it with Supergrills mod and ballanced cable

I imagine so. Might be a tad bright but that's on you as to whether or not it's too much.
This or hd 600 for pop, hip hop, and rock music?
would the fiio jadeaudio q11 be suitable for these headphones?
I still cary my ibasso d-zero v1; will it drive this? if not recommeded dac-amp minimum?

what? why "try" anything when I can just read some specs and it's like I know everything about any hardware? /s
Drop X4 sounds very similar and has a much better cable. Sometimes on sale for $80. That's what I call the bargain.

@@TR-qf2gt the stealth magnet makes no significant difference. I found the X4 extremely comfortable. One of the best budget headphones you can get.
agreed though
Do not like this type headband. Disappointed the XS has this type headband over the suspension headband
I thought you understand electricity, and should know better by now...
Bla bla bla bla without meassurment and sound test......
You are an audio gadget reviewer, but your recording audio is aweful! How is that?
Get to the point!
