This has been a showpiece number for over 80 years and while I NEVER heard (or saw) a bad performance, Gregory's is simply the best. Perhaps it's just because it seems more real and less showy than the others?
It's because he doesn't belong where he is. And when he's singing this song of playful but manipulative yearning for New York, he's feeling it. It is one of the most brilliant character-portrayals in 80s cinema.
I love how expat-ish this scene is. He's is both held in awe by this dumpy little town (see girl with bad Russian perm) but he is never quite accepted, as the woman takes that little dig. And yet he fiercely practices his craft.
If you don't know the old 1986 classic of "White Nights" then you don't know anything pal! Sit and watch it, right away! You don't know what you're missing!
