The girl who died…she’s my cousin; her dad is my uncle (he passed away a few years ago). My mom used to tell me this story all the time as a cautionary tale of the dangers of domestic violence and how it impacts the lives of everyone. Every time I hear about it it gets even sadder because she was my age when she was murdered. And I can only imagine how my uncle struggled with that loss. I hope the family of Marlin Barnes is doing well 🕊🕊🕊🕊

The guy DID get the death penalty - for each victim. It was only in 2016 (from the Internet sources I could find) that the sentence was reduced to life because of a court ruling stating that since the jury didn't come back with an unanimous ruling for death (it was 11-1) he should have received life instead. However, in the last few years whether this reduction would hold was put into question, but I can't find info on what happened (assuming the matter has been settled yet).

The authorities should be deeply ashamed of the lesser charge and it's little wonder that respect for both the cops and the judiciary have taken a dive. It's much the same here in the UK. A cop killed a woman here and it actually came out that he;d been convicted for indecent exposure even before he'd been accepted into the police force at the age of 40 !

Paul Hurth served 17 years of his 20-year sentence and was paroled in 2017, in line with the sentencing guidelines in effect at the time of his conviction. (The 20-year sentence was the stiffest allowed by California law for voluntary manslaughter.) In 2002, Nancy Gawor filed a civil suit against Hurth, and won a judgement of $2 million. The Hurth family has since relocated to a different location in the San Joaquin Valley. (It should be noted that, for whatever reason, juries are generally reluctant to convict a police officer of a capital crime.)

Wow...a cop gets only 20 yrs for murder?? Why not life? Life 25? Or life without parole? Certainly the murder was premeditated. AND he lied about it, period -- then lied about it again -- lied about what happened AND how it happened exactly -- so lied upon lies, AND on more than one occasion (AND was stupid enough to use his own service weapon -- there oughta be an extra 5 yrs tacked on for stupidity alone!!) -- AND so thereby also obstructed justice, no? What did he get as a sentence for the obstruction of justice? AND doing whatever, demeaning his uniform & role as a cop, etc??? Geez..almost impersonating a police officer, if you think about it -- a person supposedly out there to ensure peace, & serve the public, not endanger the public, & is supposed to be CATCHING the bad guys -- not BE a bad guy!! Oh...they FORGOT to charge him for all those things as well??? H'mmmmmm..... And there's probably more, if they wanted to throw the book at him, and, as a bad cop, they should have. So why didn't they??? He murdered someone (and tge victim was defenseless & out cold), AND spit on his uniform, AND spit on his job. So, geez...what else do you need to prove all this to ensure a proper & relevant sentence??? Oh, yes ... the FORENSIC evidence & INACCURATE ATTENDANCE RECORDS (thanks to his stupid cop partner of the day -- when Cop Murder didn't show up for his shift, why didn't the parner then go back & mark him as being out??? Duh...)... So, they had all of that evidence, too!! And, aagain, just 20 yrs?? Only in America!!! (Hi from Toronto!)
