I’m glad Red explains it so well, because the story became almost synonymous with split personality, but that’s not it. Jekyll’s potion is the equivalent of a mask. All it does is change his appearance so he can do whatever he wants and avoid consequences. As the saying goes, “Wear the mask long enough, the mask you will become.”
About split personality, the real one(Dissociative identity disorder), Watch anthony padilla’s interview with people with DiD, you’ll understand a tiny bit more(it’s really complex)
As for the Will, it doesn't _PRECISELY_ say "Die"; merely if he should vanish or go missing, then his estate is to be transferred over to the care of his alter ego, so that, in a sense, "Hyde" will run the place in Jekyll's absence. It was so he could still have access to his lab and work on an antidote if he ever needed it (though as we see of the ending, it didn't work out as well as he'd hoped).
I mentioned this in the OG video's comments, but Imma post it here: This story is an allegory for substance abuse and addiction. Concider that Jekyll says he "can get rid of him (Hyde) whenever he wants," and Jekyll starts taking more and more of one of his drug mixes to keep Hyde away. It's an allegory for someone who's started a habit with an addicitve drug, they say "I can stop whenever I want to," they start taking more and more of it when it becomes less effective, and when under the drug, they are not themselves as they would normally be. In the end, like with most addictions, it ends up killing the person if they can't seek the help they need, just like what happenes in this story. Jekyll dies and Hyde lives until he can no longer survive.
idk if it comes up again later in the vid, and i havent actuallly read the book yet, but im p sure jekyll left his stuff for hyde in case he got to a point where he couldnt become jekyll again, since his situation isnt actually like DID
Man, this story began as one of the all-time great twist-endings in fiction...alas, it got SO famous, that the 'twist' is just about the first thing anyone ever learns about it. I suggest reading some of Stevenson's other stories, such as "The Suicide Club" and "The Rajah's Diamond."
4:52 Genuine split-personality disorders are far more rare in real life than shown in fiction. It's so rare, that little is known about it, and the mind is so complex, that it's perfectly possible that two sufferers have entirely different experiences. I feel like you are assigning rules to it, which may be true in one case, but not another. It's also possible, even likely, that no two sufferers have an identical experience at all.
If there wasn't potion ex machina, I would say that the thing that normal people feel is off when it comes to looking at Hyde is the look in his eyes. To many people, the eyes are the gateway to the soul, so looking into the eyes of someone who doesn't want to care, that someone can easily become the most hated person on sight. It can also make someone look like completely different people, hence why it's not easy to see beyond someone wearing glasses and not wearing glasses. I even had a moment where a friend of mine, for just a second, didn't recognize me in my own house when I locked eyes with him (was having a really bad day when I am usually a bundle of positivity and that showed in my eyes which likes to change colors, based on my mood)
The early part of this video is so frustrating as you clearly don't know the story and ask questions and confused by things that Red had set in the common knowledge nerd osmosis category, like Jeckle knows he is Hyde and their appearance changes as it's a transformation not just a split personality, the formula. This story is what inspired the Hulk and others like it.
In regards to your comment of Mr. Hyde being his true self, that's not really the idea. Both Jekyll and Hyde are the same person, the good and the evil. And as Red pointed out the unspeakable urges he has and tried to suppress could by Victorian standards be something harmless like drag or being gay which in Victorian society would be seen as not that different to eating orphans. Jekyll suppressed himself so much that when he finally did start letting go a little using Hyde he swung too hard in the other direction and while that might not be what the author intended to me it kinda comes across as a tale about the dangers of repressing yourself too hard. Obviously stomping children and murdering people isn't acceptable and is the kind of thing you should suppress, but those weren't the first things Hyde did when he finally removed his inhibitions. Without knowing exactly what the thing Jekyll was repressing is its kinda hard to know for sure of course and I might be projecting from my experiences when I was in the closet.
