This was a different GTA game overall. I'm not talking about the graphics either. This was arcade style killing, car stealing, blowing up shit into the sky kind of game. It was intense fast paced action into which you can get to almost immediately when starting the game. No story driven missions, no build up, nothing. Just take an S-Uzi and raise hell. This is why I love this game, this is why everyone who likes GTA should play this one at least once.
Yep, that is why is my favorite GTA of all time. Other newer GTA werent like the first two, not even Chinatown Wars. Originally GTA was meant to be practically a parody of gang crime... now is just realistic for the sake of it.

In case anyone is wondering where GTA 2 is set, I may have some insight on this. Yes, technically it is a 'retro-futuristic' world and the story takes place in the year 2013 but I feel like that doesn't really encapsulate the overall theme of the city very well. As a kid I didn't notice this, but looking at it now I can't help but become aware of the striking resemblance this game's overall aesthetic has to late 60's / early 70's London; basically a mix of cars begging in 1930 and ending in 1970 when it comes to the models and stylistic cues. There aren't really any exceptions to this rule; there are no car designs from the 90's for example, which is when this game was released. The city design itself doesn't really tell us much about the time period (apart from the more modern-style payphones), it could be set in any part of the latter half of the 20th century. The music and pop-cultural references are mostly set in the 1990's, though there are some nods to the past. My theory on this is that since the studio that developed this (DMA) was headquartered in London and the game designers would have been in their late 20's or 30's at the time of making this game, they were basically just creating a world from their childhood memories when it comes to cars, then added stereotypical American overtones on top of that because the game was supposed to be set in America. The cars we see in this games are basically the same cars the developers saw and dreamed about as children, and the 'culture' of the city is how they grew up viewing America thru the lens of TV shows and movies. I think that best summarizes what this game is, which is pretty cool imho.
Yes, the GTA franchise is definitely intended to be a social commentary on American culture by means of satire... as well as a fun game that simulates the real world where you can live out your darkest fantasies, of course. GTA 1 was actually set in London and GTA 3 in a fictionalized version of New York City; GTA 2 seems to be set in a bizarre fusion that combines both the late 60's time period with the late 90's, as well as combining British and American aesthetics and atmosphere. It is a bit strange because all the cars on the road are what you would expect to find in 1967 London but once you turn on the radio and start doing missions you are brought into the same dark, grungy world of the late 1990's immortalized by movies like the Matrix and Fight Club. You know what I'm talking about; the black trench-coat wearing guy with body armor and sunglasses going on an over-the-top terminator-style mission borrowing a bit of cultural cues from East Asia. (the Japan-craze was just starting in the late 90's). Overall I love this game, and the weird design choices are part of what make it memorable, even though like you, I think that the artistic choices were more based on what the designers were familiar with rather than intentional thematic world-building.
This was an awesome game back in the day, providing a great open world 2.5d experience with very little resources. People forgets that while today we wander if the Wii U is underpowered, this great game ran on a system 2.000 times less powerful.

This was the only GTA game where I played to finish the missions. I like the idea of 3 gangs competing over your loyalty, while simultaneously using you as a pawn to attack the others. The gangs were pretty funny, too.
When I was a kid and played these late 90's early '00s games I at least had a childhood that didn't revolve around the computer all day. The world was a better place not over run with technology and youtube, school was fun, movies/music was good, going outside and having fun was actually normal. Kids these days think they are hard for making fun of old school technology and games and playing GTA 5 and sitting on FB all day. I have to tell you that is one LAME existence, kids these days truly missed out on the good stuff of life. I can only imagine what will happen when they get into their 20's and then later when they have kids and have absolutely no stories to tell them. :(
I'm not so sure of that. The original concept for the game was a basic street racing game with mid-race car-swapping and the Wanted Level system. It became a crime sandbox when playtesters wasted countless hours with that stuff, having more fun stealing cars and escaping the police than actually racing. So the design team at DNA Design said "fuck it, let's make it about that, then!". If the game was just "Race N Chase" as it was supposed to be, it would probably be remembered as a fun little experiment on early PCs, maybe got its sequel, and been forgotten after that. Being GTA was what made it big.
I used to play this game but just for fun mostly, I remember my fav thing was crushing that group of people in blue all at once for the sound effects lol this game was badass!

@Ace Stevens Hey, you shouldn't generalize people. Sure there are people born after the 90s that are indeed entitled but not all people. And I bet some people from the 90s are just as entitled as the new generation.

The good thing about GTA 2 is you can complete the game without doing any single mission. I remember just searching up for a Tank on each cities and destroy every vehicles until i reach amount of money to complete the city.

Wtf. I've just realised that the guy that plays jack Branning in EastEnders is in the intro to this game lmao
Ikr so random
This finna be my First footage of GTA 2, lol. Didnt know it even existed.
2021 gonna be a great year!
Without predecessors and protoypes, new inventions will not appear. Hence, before you criticize an invention, think carefully... Damn the new gen, they are too spoilt and depends on technology more than their own talents.. No wonder those of ancient times have better talents than us all...
Amen.
@Ace Stevens Hey, you shouldn't generalize people. Sure there are people born after the 90s that are indeed entitled but not all people. And I bet some people from the 90s are just as entitled as the new generation.
Exactly!
I still remember how to get tank in this game ,a secret place in the map .. so satisfying if get the tank
I never play GTA and GTA 2. I played GTA 3 to GTA V
Gta 2 to 5
If you want to play them then here you go
gta.com.ua/rockstargames-classics-free-download.phtml
They're completely free and the website is owned by Rockstar Games so it's not piracy, they should also work on newer versions of Windows including Windows 10
@@the_motherfucker oh thats awesome! Thanks for sharing :))
wow watching gameplay on this compared to gta 4 and 5, I'll just say graphics and technology has come a long way, thank god
The intro was sooo beyond the actual game play
I remember this game as a kid and loving it so much without even knowing English lmao I would just walk around and driving and shooting everything lol I'm gonna have to replay it and I'll be able to understand it now lol
I never forgot this game
Tooo nostalgic
I just bought a factory sealed ps1 version of this on ebay
Hearing the sounds makes me so nostalgic. Must of been playing this at about 10 years old, I had no idea what was going on with gangs etc, just loved driving around running people over. To be honest that's pretty much all I do on the newest GTAs anyway.
So many memories!!!!!
Good old times, when games were fun and simple.
The graphics are amazing 🤩
All My childhood memories came back with this video😞🥺
i can't tell a difference in graphics compared to the new one why does everyone make such a big deal
Always remember kids, RESPECT
so much better than gta 5
Steven Messina No GTA Chinatown is better
Withered Phantom Gamer 34 No gta advance is better
Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is better
Nkjklfd 8 this guy just play iv and v xD
nah man the controls are pure ass, the camera makes me nauseous, the sound design is annoying as shit and its overall unplayable right now.
In 1999 I would play this game for hours on end. So much fun! It's 2020; coronavirus, I'm about 7 years late, but I just downloaded GTA V. There's a bit of difference!
It's the geezer from Eastenders!
Catháin Ó Danachair you're right!
Jack Branning hahaha thought it was just me who noticed
I used to play this game and finished all missions. In term of game play, for me this is the best GTA. I played this game really a lot, I even know how to fly and how to walk beneath the ground by figuring out accidentally. My childhood game here :)
2018 anyone?
IcyRose me
Los que le dan Dislike es porque SON niñitos empezaron jugando gta V y no vieron que esto era lo que había en esa época y era un excelente juego.
Why did Playstation games always insist on playing real live video.
Because it could....and it liked to show off that it could.
+GrayWoIf ok far enough
Wasn't this a PC game first?
Gasoline85
Yes but they only came out a month apart. The PC version also looks much better because it could handle better graphics. The PC version also has the videos just not as low res as PS1.
Oh, right.
Who is watching in 2020
Oula sa remonte 😂
I don't know how the kids live with the actual video games, but one thing is sure : we certainly had the golden age of video games (wide variety of games, fast innovations, simple gameplay, less easier games and of course playing with friends)
This game is the great grand father GTA 5 isn't that worthy of respect
man I used to play gta 2 back in the day :) played vice city a few times but then faded away from gaming after that.

And remember, Respect is everything
nunca fueron las graficas del trailes :,v
The good thing about GTA 2 is you can complete the game without doing any single mission. I remember just searching up for a Tank on each cities and destroy every vehicles until i reach amount of money to complete the city.
Eu tenho esse jogo
E eu querendo baixar de novo kkj
One thing sure about this game is that police is really difficult to lose, and the AI on them is actually pretty good.
