  • Is Costco worth the emotional and time effort these days?! Come with me to the Costco of London UK to see what Christmas goods we can find and see if they are good value. This was filmed at the Wembley Costco in north London Nov 2023. Do you have a membership, is it worth it? What are your must have items?

Your channel is really special, Hannah. You put so much into your videos...and they're charming as well as informative.
Your viewers are engaged and articulate - witness the comments section. People from all over the world are having a jolly conversation together -- this week about Costco -- and it's witty convo.
It's like they've come together in a virtual cafe to have a chat -- sparked by, and about, your latest jaunt.
Your great videos are making that happen.
Well done, you! You keep it real - and fun!👍✨

Glad you were able to visit your local Costco. Their corporate headquarters are just a few miles away from home. The Kirkland brand is named after the city of Kirkland across the lake from Seattle. The prices can be very competitive. LEGO at Costco is usually a good deal. The return policy is the best of any retailer. Look for items that are unique to that store’s region. Prices followed by an Asterisk is a one-time only Close-out item. Such a fun vlog of your first visit!!

In the States, Costco’s prices are ALWAYS lower than anywhere else (outside of crazy sales)… but one of the best things about Costco is that companies often package items specifically for Costco with extras that would be add ons anywhere else. We buy sheet sets there that are AMAZING. I’ve never seen them anywhere else.

I rarely see anything at Costco (in the US) that you can do a head-to-head price comparison. Of course many things are sold under the Kirkland label, but even the major-brand items always seem to be “unique” in some way, so no taking a model number and comparing.

I'm an American with a Costco membership. I agree with you - the food is amazing. It makes meal prep for the week pretty easy. If you look at the proce cards, you'll notice stars on some of the items. The stars indicate that the item is going away after they sell out. Some popular items come back with different packaging or other minor changes.

Costco is an American gift to the world. Costco has an excellent reputation for being good to their employees, proving you can be an exemplary employer and still make a profit. I have never shopped at a Costco outside the US and this location in the UK is almost identical to the stores here in Colorado but I was mystified by the ‘qualifications’ for membership. I pay USD60 for a one-year membership and, Bob’s your uncle, I was in the door. No questions asked. I live alone so many of the massive sizes of food products make some items unreasonable but, my god, the booze is very reasonably priced and of excellent quality. Of particular mention is the Kirkland-brand Champagnes. Yes, bottled in France, it’s excellent for mimosas, a Kir Royale or an impromptu French 75. No bags at checkout but the staff are always ready with leftover cardboard boxes. Lastly, our Costco locations are infamous for the ubiquitous and plentiful free-food samples enticing members to buy that 50lb bag of pretzels. In fact, one of my friends, who is seriously rich, loves going to Costco on a Saturday morning just to try all the free stuff offered in nearly every aisle. 🤷‍♂️

I've been going to Costco for years, the Kirkland brand usually means good quality at a good price. It was interesting to see the difference in food offerings in the UK vs America. There's almost always lines at the checkout but the staff are quick here.

As an American, I was shocked at how uncrowded that Costco store was. Every Costco in the US that I have shopped at is always packed - doesn’t matter the day or time. Kirkland is their store brand and it’s usually quite good and nearly equivalent to main brands. The UK Costco does have some items I wish we had over here. I found it interesting that you are able to buy a single loaf of bread, where as in the US, you must buy bread in packs of 2 at Costco. Everything is big, but as an American store, it fits with the larger houses over here.

As a Brit, I'm also amazed at how quiet the London store is. I live 100 miles away in Birmingham, and the local Costco is ALWAYS heaving to the point that I can't shop there most of the time. We also queue along the highway to get into the fuel station.
I have the impression that Costco in the US also looks very quiet when I see vlogs from there.

Hannah, in America, you arrive early, very early or late in the day. Shopping there can be a one stop shop - for most household items. In the US, you can purchase tires and have them serviced there while you ship, purchase gas for your car, buy a car, appliances, flooring and much more through Costco. Prices are competitive especially when you own your own business. Worth buying big so you do not have to visit a gorcery store multiple times a week. No brainer!

My husband and I shop at Costco in the U.S. it's great for buying basics like toilet paper and paper towels. The thing is, you need the space to store it all. Also here in the U.S. a lot of us have an extra giant freezer in the garage. I lived in the U.K. in the 90's and some of my neighbor's had smaller refrigerators. As long as ypu have the space to store the big packs Costco is great for certain items.

Fun fact: Costco originated as a Price Club membership warehouse in San Diego, California way back in 1970’s and eventually merged with Costco warehouse (established in Seattle in early 1980’s) from the previous business partners who all worked for original owner back in 1970’s. To date, it’s the largest and most successful warehouse retailer…perhaps worldwide.

I but staples from Costco - paper towels, toilet paper, cat and dog food, cat litter, dishwasher tabs, detergent. I also buy appliances from Costco. Costco has the best return policy of any store - except for electronics everything is returnable at any time, even a year later. Edit: If you buy any food and you don’t like it, return it -you can in the US, I assume you could at the London store. I don’t like their pastry but I buy their fresh fruit, wine.

My time these days is just too valuable to spend literally roaming around a huge, crowded, visually uninteresting, store. Like you, Hannah, I'm just exhausted watching you at the end of this vlog! Perhaps stores like Costco would have been more of a value when we had 5 people living at home, but there aren't enough incentives for me to go. I also find, that many of the food items, while reasonably priced, aren't really the best quality with many of them using inferior and even unhealthy, ingredients. I'm also at a point where I try really hard not to impulse buy, and this is what stores like this one banks on. I liked comparing the UK store/experience with the one here in the US.

I don’t think it should take anyone 25 minutes to checkout normal. I have to say I loved the selection of products the store carries and wish I was there shopping. So many great things we don’t have in the US, and the quality 😍. Things change daily. The rule of thumb is to grab it when you see it, it may not be there next time.

There use to be restrictions. Same with a lot of other wholesalers, but I can't think of the last time I went to a wholesaler in either the US or Canada where they refused to allow me to buy a membership. Heck, a couple I've been to no longer even require memberships. I remember being really little in the late 80s/early 90s and having a giant list of stuff my parents would pick up for people that couldn't get memberships whenever we went shopping. It sucked.

When Costco first opened her in Oregon in the 1980’s you have to own a business or work at only certain places to get a card. We had a family business which allowed us membership but not all privileges. I still have my original card under our business name. About 10-15 years ago they issued new cards in individual family names. But it did not as a place where you had to meet 😊.

From my experience, ANYTHING of this brand is of excellent quality (as good or better than any ‘name brand’ item) and I would buy without hesitation. (Quality is much higher than Sam’s Club’s ‘Members Mark’ brand.)
    2. ANYTHING from Costco’s in-store bakery is of high quality and absolutely DELICIOUS! 😋

Someone did the breakdown on costs at Costco vs the regular retailer. Tne cost savings was $1.14 per purchase. The USA membership would require 53 visits to break even on cost of the membership. Costco benefits those who buy large quantities. Also, the membership accounts for 72% of the companies profits.

As an American I do enjoy Costco! we're a household of 2 and that is where we go for most of our shopping outside of fresh produce. it's just as packed and the people are just as aggressive as the grocery stores and/or Target. People are super aggressive out in public nowadays for some reason in America, I wish ours was as empty as yours! Waiting through the line at the end sucks but at least here they have a system down pact to shuffle everyone through very quickly. it's not a pretty or aesthetic experience but it for sure beats paying a premium for smaller-sized everyday items. If you live on your own though may not be worth it, things are just too large and I wouldn't get through it all before it expires.

The items I buy are canned drinks, tinned tomatoes, large container of Geeta mango chutney, cat food pouches (about £5 cheaper than supermarket), bin bags, meat and fish.
The individual Victoria sponge cakes are really nice, & the sandwich platters and sandwiches are also nice.
You do after a while of going to Costco get a feel for what is a good deal, and what isn’t.

As a Canadian who spends a LOT of time in our local Costco, this was fascinating. Super jealous of some of the readymade food you have there - I'd have been all over the peri peri! Your prices on the food is SO much better than here - I want all of that cheese! Thanks for this - have a wonderful weekend!

Really enjoyed your review of Costco! You were great, and earned my sub. I'm from the states, so grew up shopping in Costco (California) -- Love how Costco rotates new items in regularly so it's never dull. Especially seasonally. Our family buys food there on a monthly basis. We save money as food is sold in bulk. We eat some, and can put some away in our pantry - or build up our food storage. Costco is the bomb.

I live in Mexico and I love Costco but it is always so crowded 😵‍💫 Honestly Costco’s pizza is one of my favorites , good flavor and good price and what I buy there are cleaning products, supplies for my bussines and very specific food. Thank for the video Hannah!!❤

I go to Costco almost every weekend with my daughter. It’s our favorite store. 😅 We get most of our groceries there and often split the bulk food items. The clothes are actually pretty good. Love getting my grandkids clothes, toys, and books. It’s the first place I think to go for electronics, appliances, household items, furniture, tires, eyewear, my mom’s hearing aids, you name it! Probably because they have excellent quality items. If it’s not namebrand, it’s Kirkland Signature which is just as good (often actually a name brand, branded as KS).
But the REAL reason I always shop at Costco is there excellent customer service and the RETURN POLICY. With the exception of a very limited amount of things, Costco will except just about anything in return. And for a long time. Like it’s crazy. The things I have returned, I have stories. No one else backs up there products like that. So I feel safe buying anything there. They get all my money. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It is a good place to shop for a giant food scene in a film where the look is “middle of the road” and none of the actors have to eat anything! Although those macarons were great value and I could do some fancy macaron towers on the cheap 😂 for Handmaids Tale. Have a great weekend! 💖

I think you'll be a Costco convert. The food is an amazing value and the meat gets rave reviews from everyone I know who shops there. The massive Christmas decorations are for the people who have massive houses with giant basements to store it all. I would love to shop there but my little apartment has no storage. It's absolutely the best bargains anywhere. Hi from Pennsylvania.

I'm an American. I stumbled on your channel because of your walkthroughs of the department stores in London during Christmas. I loved this Costco video because I can go to my local Costco. I haven't in years. I wasn't the family member with the membership. And if you're on your own, usually those packages are really big. It's hard to use it up. But I like that they have a lot of things to offer. Some things I cannot find anywhere else. It was fantastic during COVID lockdowns. My niece and I stocked up for 2 months in one visit. Keep it up! You do great with this content.

Hello Hannah, I loved this video so much that I have now watched it twice! As an American, I can't get over the reasonable price of food there, but the VAT of 20% on other items is double or more of what I would pay in my area. The look on your face when you start the wrap-up in your car is priceless! Shopping is so exhausting, isn't it? This was your first time, you will get used to it. Some of the sales are amazing! I am getting a membership for my youngest daughter and her family for Christmas. I think I'd like the Costco Monopoly game. Did you check out the gas/petrol prices? Remember to eat something and have a big cup of coffee before you go next time! LOL!!! Oh, and MERRY CHRISTMAS! 🎄

Most UK shops (Physical or online) don't show VAT separately, it's all included so we never have to add Sales Tax to the marked price, however as Costco is aimed at businesses who may be able to claim the VAT back, it's shown separately.

Love you Hannah! Love to see the difference in pricing and stock comparison! I'm Canadian, from Newfoundland and I've been to London and it never fails to shock me how cheap food and alcohol is compared to here in Canada! The costco cooked chicken here is $12.99 I beleive. The fresh raw chicken wings pack is $30! And we don't have alcohol here in anywhere but licensed "liquor" stores! And a 12 case of beer is $30! And a Smirnoff 750 ml vodka is around $25!

Hi from S. Cal. Our Costco just got self check out stations a few years ago so that can be faster sometimes. You don't have to be a business to get the membership, btw, but they limit what credit cards they accept (Visa but not Mastercard, and Discover Card and one other).
I wish ours had some of your food (Victoria Sponge!). =) The muffins are famous for being very good and inexpensive. The pizza (only choice of cheese or pepperoni) are massive and only $10. We just had both kinds at my grandson's family b-day party. =) The wine isn't that good of a deal imo. Also ours has petrol station and the gas is usually pretty cheap, so the lines for those are usually long too. You do have to know your prices to make sure you're getting a deal (otherwise, no use in buying in bulk).
It's great for electronics (bought my computer there) and we've bought our tires there too in the past. Great for nice quality (and long!) beach towels in the summer, and found a set of melamine bowls with LIDS one time. =)
Don't forget to freeze what you know you can't eat right away (cheese, bread, muffins, meat, pasta) to keep your savings. =) Or you can share the rest with your family.

Hannah, KS = Kirkland Signature*, which is Costco's own brand. Many of the KS products are manufactured by the big names brands. For example, Kirkland AA and AAA batteries are made by Duracell, but are branded differently, and the KS brands are cheaper as well. *Kirkland is a city in Washington state, where Costco's headquarters were originally located.

I always used to be exasperated (and a little bit sneery) at my husband’s bulk-buying of toilet paper at Cosco. Don’t know if was the same elsewhere, but during the Covid-19 epidemic British people panic-bought bog roll so there was a shortage pretty much everywhere. We were possibly the only household that didn’t have to worry about being careful, all thanks to my husband being a weirdo 😁 🇬🇧

Hi Hannah, I live in N. Florida and do not have a Costco here but I do have a Sam’s which is the original warehouse store. Sam’s is Walmart. I am also single so while many deals are great,I don’t have the room to store bulk items. It’s easy to spend hundreds (or thousands ) of dollars at Sam’s. I do buy bulk laundry detergent, fabric softener and other home goods there (including some food!). Other items I need to go to Publix and but smaller quantities. You are correct, going there to get holiday/Christmas party foods/cakes is a fantastic idea.

Most people think there are Costcos conveniently located for everyone in the U.S., but sadly not true. The closest one for me is 3 1/2 hours down the highway. Unless i want to cross over into Canada. Much closer mileage-wise, but that queue at the border-crossing is a bear!😂 And, I think they get you on excise taxes, too. Very convenient for bulk shopping, though. I can be snowed-in for weeks at a time (over a 7 month winter), and knowing I have a full pantry is quite comforting.

I do a lot of copywriting, and I discovered working for any number of different types of clients that the top of the market is the easy way to price anything. It's also what's coming for the rest of the market, although it may take years. Note the bulk buy stuff, in particular. It's pretty much inevitable that for the sake of space and consumer budgets, it will find a niche in the rest of the market. Less handling, locked-in costs, and profits, etc. Meanwhile, It's not easy to do an entire inventory in 42 minutes, but you did. :)
