Thanks! Always remember that not everyone or every club fits these stereotypes. Sometimes it just takes visiting a few until you find the good ones. There are some great ones and people out there in our hobby. 👍
I always love looking down the flight line. You can always tell who's plane has a problem. You can't see the plane between the 5 guys crowding around it trying to help. Half the time their help is actually what makes it start working.
Love it... The exact reason I've been flying for over 35 years and have never flown at a RC field even though they have always been closer than where I went to fly... Now i have my own field here on the homestead i bought my property based on flying and the reason I bought a snow plow for my side by side great way to plow a runway on wet dirt.. Never needed the snow plow for snow i drive a dam hummer..
This video really hit home. I don’t have anyone to fly with where I live and the clubs are all stuck up older gentlemen who only fly patterns and are strict about everything you do. So I just go fly at a field by myself.
It's definitely a bummer that some flying clubs have that culture. It sometimes takes trying a few different ones to find one that is more laid back. We got lucky with our last two clubs thankfully. Worst case - park flying is always a fun option as well, as you said.
Been flying, floating and driving all things R/C for 50 years!! Thanks for a wonderful hobby Nikola Tesla. This is SOOOOO funny and VERY accurate. At one point or another I was depicted multiple times!!!! My message to all is - Have fun pursuing all things R/C....and always remember that the "other guy" is just doing the same thing.
Love your videos. 45 yrs into this hobby and I still look for the “FUN” in it everyday. It needs to be more fun for a lot of people. Our club has at least two of every stereotype.
An excellent analogy for the AMA club experience. Especially the FAA wannabes and the Club police. I have been building and flying since the 1960s and I avoided flying clubs for those exact reasons. Back then we had to worry about crossing frequencies and shooting each other down. It was always better to get a bunch of friends, find a big field, and try to chase each other around.
Great video!! Having been one of the first guys to ever fly FPV at my club 10 years ago, I have heard all the unfounded critical comments and deployment of idiotic rules to try to discourage my activity. My moto is we are all out here to have fun and be safe. Who cares about the rest. Thanks for sharing!
About 15 years ago I quit the hobby and took up ham radio. Ham radio is also full of grumps, but now I can just turn the dial to get away from them. Now it's amazing...I can spend countless hours with my hobby and never be told I'm doing it wrong.
I'm glad I found these videos and comments. I'm new to the hobby of about 4 months now and there is a local RC club/field about 4 miles from where I live (very convenient) ....never knew it was there. I stopped by there one day during the week while out on a rip on the bike, met a couple guys that was there, and they gave me the low down on requirements etc....they seemed like good ole boys and I was thinking about joining....not so much now. I'll keep going to the 2 schools and the ballfield I found, I hit the ballfield during the week and the schools on the weekend while kids are gone and the place is huge, you could probably fit 6-7 football fields inside the flying area and now I met the guy with a farm next door that has 40 acres, he told me if I ever get run off at the school just come over to his farm and have at it. I don't do drama so them flying clubs can have it, I like the quiet, peaceful, being outdoors, sun on my face, fresh air, no mouth, nobody bitching, no rules, out of the house and watching the graceful flight of my plane against the sunset backdrop ALL BY MYSELF....well, unless my friend shows up. There's not too much flying going on when she gets there.
You forgot the person, who buys a plane far to expensive and builds it, never flies it because they like to look at it and are afraid to crash it. OH Wait thats me.
Youre absolutely right, these kinds of people are the reason, why I only once went to a flying sight in my six year long rc carrier. Love ur channel and style of videos please keep going like this.
I’ve never flown club, mostly just parks or blasting around over my neighbors fields (they’re fine with it.) I will say I’m one of those guys who doesn’t strictly maintain line of sight and/or sometimes hop into general aviation airspace when no one is using it. Every time I look at the FAA website and see that I need to go through a whole new process to legally fly is the start of a bad day for me. Now that you’re thinking I’m probably flying 50 miles away and 10,000 feet I will say that I have a personal maximum of 800 that I rare like go to and I will try to maintain visual contact, mostly with my drones as those are screens, my planes are a different story because I can’t take my eyes off of what I’m doing and those are rigged to goggles. The only time I’ve flown in a club like setting is when the fite fest West happened and that’s the first time I’ve flown an airplane FPV and not ended my day with a crashed plane.
From the first day I showed up with my Carbon Cub S2 trainer people were going on and on about how I should fly gas planes even when I'm just barely learning. And also complaining about how Spektrum is the worst thing ever. Meanwhile, I can get two flights in while they're just standing around thinking about maybe flying their planes and futzing with the engine, which sometimes doesn't even work.
@@SharphandXeno I guess a lot is what you started with. Safe and all that was what let me learn how to fly on my own and the company's given me the best customer service I've ever had, replacing things when stuff goes wrong, so I'm pretty loyal now. It's also been nice to have batteries just work after reading all those horror stories from a few years ago about everything lighting on fire. But I just want to have fun, don't need to have the absolute best servos just for bragging rights or whatever, and I'm not good enough yet to need to push the limits.
@@joegroves2517 hmm? Not quite sure what you mean with that first part, but I agree, the SAFE, AS3X and now smart batteries/chargers from Horizon are game changers that made it really easy for newbies to get into the hobby.
Haha! I really enjoyed this! I have been into all things RC for over 40yrs. I for sure have seen all of these stereotypes in various forms, and must admit, I have been guilty of some of this behavior myself. I have found that the majority of long time RC enthusiasts tend to be male, and most are quite intelligent people. Many are friendly and will go out of their way to help you if you need it. Donating parts, helping you glue and tape to get one more flight in, etc. But many also have big egos and can be very argumentative sometimes. As I have gotten older, I have been able to recognize some of my own negative traits in this regard, and really work hard to not be "that guy". I enjoy debating with intelligent people and learning from them when we have a difference of opinion, but if things start to get heated, I try to apologize and walk away. I have found that life is so much easier this way.
Appreciate your story and the self-reflection you made. It's our hope that videos like this will get people that maybe fit a little *too* much into these stereotypes to take a step back and realize the hobby is meant to be an outlet for fun and meeting awesome people. Always remember not to take it or yourself too seriously.
I'm a pattern flier. But only because the FAA, the Tower, and Approach, get really pissy when you try to randomly hover over the airfield. Rescue isn't a fan of it either but they get to play with their hoses so they let it slide.
Love it. Everything you mentioned here is exactly why I dont go to AMA fields. My soccer field works great lol. Keep it up fellas. Also what flite test video was that?
LOL All I can say is, my local club/field is Marymoor, and I visited it twice and helped set things up for 'new pilot day' and sat around with the members to see if I wanted to join, and I saw nearly all of your 'stereotypes', particularly the negative ones which is why two years later I am still only flying on my farm and awful at it.
Great videos. In 42+ yrs in the hobby I’ve every single type of pilot in your videos. “Old, field of depth guy”. After he flies right over the pits twice he lands in the pilot station. Then says”I’m having trouble with my sight and depth perception.
Great video mate, I live in EU and I have to say - as much as I despise putting labels on people - we met the same people YAY! But I have met someone who is more kind of a yeti and was not listed above , the DUCT TAPE guy. Those who try to fix a broken propeller with duct tape , yes , they're rare but do exist.
that's why i don't fly in fling fields anymore , we have our own field with no rules and its fun , great job with the videos and keep up the good work .
Im fortunate enough to be in an aircraft club that is very accommodating to all ages, flying styles and aircraft. We did have a few that thought the were an authority on the hobby, but fortunately they're not part of the club any more.
8:12 Another thing we don't get at my club. We communicate. Sometimes I am a pattern flyer when I just wanna laze about up there, except I buck the stereotype by A: not shitting on others who wanna fly elsewise B: I communicate with the other pilots and work with them. And likewise when I'm feelin' the need for speed, or I wanna try a little stick jamming, I'll communicate with the guys that happen to be flying lazy circles or doing 3D or whatever.
3:28 there’s a video of a rc zero getting its wing taken off by a small Walmart rc helicopter and when it hit the ground it basically exploded on impact
It's a hobby thing across the board. I used to fly models, helicopters and planes but I'm mainly models railways for 60 years. Don't touch, no you can't have a go etc etc. We built a small exhibition O gauge layout. Ok, things are expensive? A 10 year old showed so much interest we showed him the sections, left him with it and went down the pub for 2 hours. His Mum couldn't believe it. If you want there to be a local model shop in your town ... you have to encourage and engage the kids in your hobby. Outside with Dad doing something practical.
Had an experience while maidening a P-51 35cc Mustang. We had two fields and right angles to each other but one faced the Sun so after I got the plane in the air I turned 90° to face away from the sun. I was no longer standing directly in front of the flight station now, so the president of the club came over picked up the flight station and moved it in front of me. I told him I'll be landing shortly using the runway I took off from, would he come back and move the flight station back from me when I land. Now that's the kind of adherence to rules that would have made Henrich Himmler proud.
Love the video, I can relate to at least 2 types of rc pilots. Beside of identifying myself or some folks with this descriptions I feel all rc pilots kind of cicle between all of this types (and I think that it could be more) Just have fun and enjoy the hobby.
I got tired of these people long ago taking the fun out of fun. Now i am the guy that goes to public RC meets and congratulate them on what a fine toy airplane they have there. It always results in "TOY!!! Do you know how much money i have in that plane?" My response. "Well i guess that leaves some unhappy child at home!" as i walk away still secretly admiring the beautiful workmanship of their creation and their skill flying them. I just think they need to be brought down to earth a little. After all, they are not saving the world from tyranny with toy airplanes. It's a hobby and should be fun for all.So lighten up! A guy at my local hobby shop pulled a gun on another guy one time over toy planes. Holy Cow! I just fly in my yard and back road parks. I love it when birds come to check out my planes. As far as i am concerned they are the only ones with a legitimate squawk about my flying skills.
You nailed it! I was at a club field flying one time...all by myself; nary a sole at the field. I was flying aerobatics over the field when another club who was driving past the field stopped and then proceeded to tell me that I shouldn't be flying aerobatics over the field. Apparently, I was putting him in danger at his house.
Good video... I started out as the 3D guy, and fit that description pretty well! Lol, though I've since found myself transitioning into the scale flyer guy 'not represented here unfortunately'... in which there is no such thing as too much detail, even if it adds a tone of weight and makes the plane fly like crap... also, trying to match full-scale roll rates and turn radius characteristics in the model's scale.
Wow this video is too real. After 6 years of park flying, I decided to join an airfield, I encountered nothing but old men yelling at me. No wonder this is a dying hobby.
Brilliant Video, you really hit the spot with alot of these and topics like the legislators effectively only making it harder for those who care and not those who just do whatever they want
What a great funny video as always guys! I am that passionate kid in the hobby and luckily I’ve never received ONE complaint from an older person about how/where I’m flying thank goodness. My neighbors love it when I fly! Well, there was only one instant where I was flying my UMX Ultrix at a soccer field and this guy said he was getting nervous because I was flying too closely. I apologized and moved over some but he STILL CONSTANTLY was watching my plane. 😂 That itty bitty Ultrix haha. I’ve got myself multiple times with it and had my finger in those prop blades at full throttle before. Yeah it might hurt for a second but definitely didn’t cut me open. A bigger plane, yes for sure it would! Definitely still gotta be careful but sometimes people take it too far! Thanks!

Fun vid! Here's one for you, I was legit run out of a club back in San Diego simply because I was flying and filming there for my RUclips channel. Run out for promoting the hobby, priceless, haha!
I'm terribly guilty of being the "glow guy" you mentioned and I'm not even old yet. Well, spiritually. Lol. You did forget one category here, The Hoarders. the guys with 100+ planes in storage, and flies the same two horizon BNFs every Sunday
I loved this video guys!! If I am honest with myself and other folks, I have fit into 1 or all of these categories in at one time or another during my close of 50 years of flying. Rubber band, CL...if it would fly, I had to have it. And now at 71 1/2 years old I find that I have changed a lot. Living in a small town in Alabama where the closest AMA field about an hour and a half away...... I find it's just my son and I looking for a safe place to fly. Our rules are simple. Don't endanger other people or property, don't hurt ourselves, don't annoy anyone in the area. Also if anyone, young or old, shows any interest in RC planes....encourage them no matter what the age. Not many folks in this town are into the hobby so be kind and courteous to all. If I fly a little lower than I use to, I'm not showing off....I just can't see as well as I use to! :) Slow is good, slower is even better and most of all.....Have fun, respect and love others. Makes you feel good! Thanks for taking me into my past, present and...Future?? :)
There are definitely a few of these stereotypes at my flying field lol. The armchair engineer guy keeps telling me to tape my antennas to the sides of my CARBON FIBER fuselage (which absorbs 2.4ghz) and how to "properly" launch a Funjet.
I did the club thing back in the day. Then I bought a farm in the country, now guys occasionally call to come out and fly in the great outdoors! Lolol true thing! Now I'm 100% electric and vintage 2 channel hi-start sailplane enthusiast! I'll never look back!
I am still tallying up how many of those types I have been in the past/present and future... Add in a little "reckless mayhem" and some good old rock and roll.... Just another day at the field (My Happy Place)... What a frickin Awesome Hobby... BTW "raised up in the Hobby" by Young Gun pilots... And tryin to pass on that same Spirit to all.... What Michael "Crash" Hancock said. "Build something, Fly something, Get out there and Enjoy this Great Hobby of ours."

I always love looking down the flight line. You can always tell who's plane has a problem. You can't see the plane between the 5 guys crowding around it trying to help. Half the time their help is actually what makes it start working.
Don't forget "the talker", the one who if you make eye contact with him you'll be standing there talking until after dark.
We addressed them in this video as “Nod”.
0:28 a while ago I commented about this manouver on some other video and boy, I still can't get over how awesome that figure is
5:42 I’m a kid and I fly control line and some rc. I fly it with my dad, who got me into the hobby.
7:43 oh thank god tail heavy isn’t an idiot
Gotta love the safety officer, I always leave the prop on while im working on plane, just so I can hear them cry!
not a good reason for a potential serious injury.
This channel just gets better and better, keep up the good work!!!
This video may have single handedly convinced me to get back into RC
WHY DID YOU EVER LEAVE
@@GENESUTUBE69cause of people like this
You guys should buy the omphobby bighorn, because I think it would really fit your guy's flying style
I was blown away how well it flies. Put a bigger esc, run 4s in it, and its becomes a timber x on crack.
and the funcub ng
We reached out to OMP a few weeks ago, never heard back unfortunately. 🥲
@@TailHeavyProductions ooh that's bad
Maybe try again because I really want to see a review from you guys on that plane
@@TailHeavyProductions aww that's sad, did see your comment on the funcub ng multiplex video though, hope to see a review on it soon!
Guilty as charged on Spektrum lol, I’m a FrSky pilot. but hey, you’re the pilot, you can fly on whatever the heck you want in the end.
@@SharphandXeno Just that once we learn to use and get used to one system we probably are inclined to stick with it.
@@joegroves2517 Ah, I see. That is pretty true!
Recent subscriber, I anticipate these video’s. The informative fun rc/flight content is fantastic.
Why apologize, just walk away, they do not listen anyway.
You are "That Guy" By that I mean, You are "That Guy" that I LOVE flying with... And yeah I am the "Spare Parts" Guy at our field....
Appreciate your story and the self-reflection you made. It's our hope that videos like this will get people that maybe fit a little *too* much into these stereotypes to take a step back and realize the hobby is meant to be an outlet for fun and meeting awesome people. Always remember not to take it or yourself too seriously.
No joke! Too funny too true. Especially with the old geezer who’s life mission is to tell you that your doing it wrong!
Another quality video from one of the best rc channels out there. Great work guys!
This video should be shown at EVERY club - mandatory!
I'm a pattern flier. But only because the FAA, the Tower, and Approach, get really pissy when you try to randomly hover over the airfield. Rescue isn't a fan of it either but they get to play with their hoses so they let it slide.
Dang whipper-snappers wit the foamys....back in my day, the late Triassic....
It's killing me how much this applies to other hobbies as well.
1:24. Bruh. That tailwhip killed me. 😂💀💀💀.
Hahaha! The 3d pilots comment!👍😁 sadly, I stand LIKE THAT, but only when everything is working perfectly!😳🤷♂️🤪
Like i just clicked on random vid, but sounds like this man had his feeling hurt a little bit and now venting on everyone that comes across this vidja
"official flying fields" operated by clubs are the R/C equivalent of living in an HOA neighborhood.
I have never, ever felt so attacked
Marymoor's not all bad! Give us another shot on a Sunday morning sometime :)
Sunday mornings at Marymoor are the best! That was our childhood. Bryan and the kiddos all just enjoying the hobby how it’s meant to be enjoyed. 💙
Great videos. In 42+ yrs in the hobby I’ve every single type of pilot in your videos. “Old, field of depth guy”. After he flies right over the pits twice he lands in the pilot station. Then says”I’m having trouble with my sight and depth perception.
Same types of people using different terms in EVERY hobby, well maybe not matchbook collecing. Loved the video.
I belong to 2 clubs, that fly everything. Thankfully it's a good group of guys and a relaxed and helpful atmosphere.
SPOT ON !!!.....You guys are beyond you're years ...TY for posting another great video.
Oh man you nailed it! During my RC career this has been the biggest turn-off for me going to the ama fields.
We're a very small club in rural North Central PA. Because of this each of us pilots must, on any given day, assume 3-4 of these traits. 😊
Bwwaaaahhhh!!!! Share the load.... Great Reply...
Ive flown RC since about 85' this is solid advice
Your videos are bringing me back into the sport slowly but surely.
U really hit the NAIL on the HEAD. I could give REAL NAMES to every one of the 10.. I am even mentioned as several.
Well. This is now my favorite RC channel. I was following on insta for ages in the short form, thisnis gold.
Thank you! RUclips is our primary platform, glad to have you here! 😁👍
3D pilot here and loved the video 😂😂😂, keep up the good work!
I don't have this problems b.c. i fly alone. No club, no rc field, just enjoy the free sky :D
Wow this video is too real. After 6 years of park flying, I decided to join an airfield, I encountered nothing but old men yelling at me. No wonder this is a dying hobby.
This video is great! good job guys!
Lots of shots taken in Magnusson Park in Seattle. Awesome!
Thanks!
20 whole years in r/c lol I've been in the hobby since the 70s and never had issues with anyone everyone is helpful and great to talk too I feel bad wherever you fly the only guy I've seen at the clubs I've been in is the hotdog the guy who has all the top notch stuff and does nothing but stunting all day
Hahaha I have just realised you usef a video from Martin Pickering and he is not the same guy with the beer, he is another good friend called Alex. And great videos guys!! I have probably seen everyone of them like 10 times by now hahaha
Great work guys! My favorite was the kamikaze pilot and especially the the scenes showing models heading into the pits areas 😂😂😂
I love it all. I enjoy flying old glow trainers like kadet senior and I love new extreme flight arfs and even build Wendell hostetler kits. Rc is great
Dude this channel is straight flames all you peeps making such fire content love it!
My buddy and I were nicknamed Duck and Dodge because of our excellent flying skills :)
So funny 😂 love the commentary. A job well done
Fun vid! Here's one for you, I was legit run out of a club back in San Diego simply because I was flying and filming there for my RUclips channel. Run out for promoting the hobby, priceless, haha!
The iRoNy...that sucks. Hopefully we can fly together sometime soon! Love your builds.
hey just letting yall im sorry if i came off wrong on asking which plane i should get on the rv 8 or c170 i did get a rv-8 60e and love it
I'm terribly guilty of being the "glow guy" you mentioned and I'm not even old yet. Well, spiritually. Lol. You did forget one category here, The Hoarders. the guys with 100+ planes in storage, and flies the same two horizon BNFs every Sunday
🤣🤣 I’m dyin! You earned a subscriber good sir!
From Vegas to Detroit I have run into all you have mentioned.
Used to fly at a field where a guy would always say. "Whatcha need to do" I never went back!
The board member 😂 so true. I’m not going to a special place to fly my toy plane!
I did the club thing back in the day. Then I bought a farm in the country, now guys occasionally call to come out and fly in the great outdoors! Lolol true thing! Now I'm 100% electric and vintage 2 channel hi-start sailplane enthusiast! I'll never look back!
Nitro for life...
Batteries are for vibrators...
Amazing video good stuff guy👍👌🤙
