Okay so basically there are two groups in the tournament. Group A and Group B. First there is a preliminary round where each team plays one game against every team in their respective groups. From these preliminary rounds 4 teams with the highest amount of points proceed to the quarter finals, so we have 8 teams battling it out. Quarter finals are the one-and-done rounds as the teams that lose are out. The semi-finals are played between the winning 4 teams and the teams that lose in the semi-finals will meet in the bronze game while the winners will go to the final.

I have such a strong nostalgia for this. I was in my last couple months of conscription and returning to the barracks from the weekend leave I sprint to the unit, switch out my gear and run downstairs to the tv-room and saw the finale. With the victory, I swear, the whole brigade roared, going downtown Helsinki to celebrate is nothing in comparison to that experience.

No, USA is not the team to beat. I mean they are decent, usually playing for medals for real too, but really the best teams usually are Canada, Sweden, Finland, Russia and Czeck.
    Finland has won 1995, 2011, 2019 and 2022.

My co-worker was in the audience in semifinal and in the final and she sent pictures from there, good memories. Everybody cried a lot when Finland won ❤ This was the third gold for Finland. The coach had been with the previous winning team in 2011 too but what makes it even more special is that those games 2011 were in the same hockey arena in Slovakia than these 2019 ones were. There are groups in World Cup soccer as well. Firstly 2 or 3 out of four teams get through the first round in the cup system, where eventually every loss means you are terminated from the tournament. In the end there is only one winner, the one who wins the final. It is the same system in ice hockey: first groups, then the playoffs in a cup system.
World's top countries are Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Czech and Russia. Switzerland and Germany, e.g. have improved a lot during the past 10-20 years. In the world championship, the best players from NHL are not participating usually, as the world championship is normally at the same time with NHL play offs, and many NHL professional refuses to join. World Cup and olympic ice hockey (was) is a whole another level. It is like soccer world cup: the best players from any professional league, including NHL are in.
In 2019 world championship the deal was that every other country, especially Canada and USA had a lot of NHL players in their teams. Russia, Sweden, Czech etc. included. Finland did not get any, but there were players from national league, KHL (Russian league) and other European leagues, so Finland was an underdog that according the specialist did not stand any chance beating any of the before mentioned big countries. And...

    • @tommilaitinen5555
      @tommilaitinen5555 Год назад +1

Finland has four world championships in ice hockey: 1995, 2011, 2019 and 2022. As of 2022 Finland was IIHF (internatinal ice hockey federation) world ranking #1. Finland of around 5,6 million people, and behind the NHL countries Canada and USA with population and registered players of, don't know how many. Behind is also Russia which has one of the elite leagues, KHL, but still.
Out of all those world championships Finland was the most underrated team in 2019. After Finland beat Russia, there were some bitter comments from Russians, that Finland is not playing ice hockey... Um, now what is Finland playing then if it is in the world championships of ice hockey? Playing badminton, chess, soccer, rugby... what?
For about 20-25 years, Finland has been coached with high standards. The players have got mental practice, the players have been encouraged to make their own moves but always thinking about the whole, the team. Each move should benefit the team in some way, so there is no room for being selfish, and eventually the teams from juniors to seniors, the teams have become "families" where brothers help each other out. So the difference may be in the mentality which is very hard to practice or copy. We have the same kind of mentalities progressing in other team sports as well, but our nation is such a small one, that we do not have perhaps enough players to be on top of the world in all the team sports. But check Finnish volleyball, basketball (Lauri Markkanen), soccer (first time in European championships in 2021) etc.

To respond to the question on why it is a penalty (in this case a penalty shot) is that even if you are able to make contact with the puck, but he also must be responsible for making sure the play is clean. The Canadian defender swipes his stick to knock the puck off and in doing this he hits the skates of the Finnish player this is tripping (usually a 2-min minor penalty), but in addition to that fact this play was an effective breakaway for Finland meaning that without the penalty (tripping) Finland would have had an incredible chance at scoring and this was blocked through an illegal play (tripping) so the referee rewarded a Penalty Shot to Finland.
Later you see a regular tripping call (against Theodore when he tripped Kakko) and that led to a 2-min minor penalty against Shea Theodore and that Power play led to Anttila to score to make it 1-1.

Hockey World Championships is very different to football World Cup, where every country has their best players usually, unless injured. This hockey tournament is stupidly held at a time when the NHL is still playing playoffs, so most of the top players are still playing there and can't come. Many who are already out of the playoffs will have injuries they need to heal and stuff. It's not just that they don't want to come (although in some cases it might be that too). In hockey, the Olympics used to be much more important since it was best against best, but now they don't go there either (NHL didn't want to have a break in the season during the Olympics anymore). It's bullshit, but at least it's the same for every country. I just feel like it's really watered down if it's not best against best and don't really care all that much anymore.

One thing you must also remember that unlike all other sports, ice hockey world championships do not have the best players available. Far from it. Top league NHL, which has 32 teams and over 1000 worlds top players under contract, do still play their playoffs at the same time. And most players who are not playing in the playoffs, do not bother to join their teams.
It is like in football if Premier League, Serie A, La Liga and Bundesliga would play at the same time and players from those leagues could not join their national teams.

The players were not rookies. They are/were professionals. Just first timers in world championships. There were no NHL players on that team. Now the same core has won another world championship and olympic gold. Some of them have gone to NHL, some stay professionals in Europe. World championships are held every spring. NHL doesn't take a break for this tournament, but the players who are not in NHL playoffs anymore can come. In 2019 Russia had almost their full best on best squad. This year Finland has the 3rd best scorer from NHL on the team. The problem with Finland is, their top players are so good, and they take their teams so far in NHL, they cannot come. But there are good players in Europe, so there is no point in bringing 4th liners from North America anyways.

It really wasn't the number of first timers that made the finnish people so doubtful about the team and calling them worst in a long time, but the fact that we barely had active KHL&NHL players on the team. If sweden arrived in the next WC with just 5 NHL players and rest were from all over europe, they'd meet the same fate in the hands of their media & fans.
That is why by far this is my fav gold. Nobody believed in them, not even their own people. 1995 wasn't a surprise win and 2011 the finns were in general a potential medal candidate but 2019 people expected their games to end early on. And then they went and beat sweden and russia (who I think on paper had the best team) and not only beat russia but left them with zero goals.
They weren't even a B team, more like D team..yet on the last stretch they won teams that were filled with the best players teams can get in today's WC's. Really was and is a modern version of Miracle on Ice

No. This is wrong information. 100% clear penalty shot. If you get the puck first and trip a player after, it is still a tripping penalty. And actually it is the same rule in football nowadays. The thing that you have to touch puck/ball first is a common misunderstanding of the rules. Only if the trip after was accidental then it can be waved off, but a reckless dive is not accidental.

It should have been a minor penalty for tripping instead of a penalty shot. From the rule 24.8 IV:
"If, in the opinion of the Referee, a Player makes contact with the puck first and subsequently trips the opponent in so doing, no “Penalty Shot” will be awarded, but a Minor Penalty for “tripping” shall be assessed."
