Thousands of seniors are being disenfranchised from voting in the upcoming primaries, and here's why: Back when I got my driver's license, your social security number Was your driver's license number. Hundreds of thousands of people over 65 are having their applications for mail-in ballots rejected because they are putting down their Current driver's license numbers. Given the choice to write their social security number on one line or write their driver's license number on another line, maybe they wanted to go with the "safer" option, pulled out their driver's license, and wrote down that number. Maybe They Couldn't Remember that 46 years ago, their Original DL number Was their Social Security number, and this would not match their "Original Voter Registration". And the entire application is rejected. Certainly, presumably, there is no explanation of this on the new Forms. Simple oversight? Does anybody really believe this Guaranteed "Snafu" didn't Occur to those in charge of Legislating these new "improvements" to voter identification regulations? Of Course it did. I'm glad I'm Canadian. The process for me to register for voting is I check a box when I file my income tax, to allow my info to be given to Elections Canada. Also, when I vote, it takes me all of 15-20 minutes to walk to the polls, vote and walk home. There are also water fountains there, so I don't have to worry about a law against someone bringing me water.

They did that to me in Florida once. They denied my mail application, although I sent all the documentation, including a copy of my passport. So I went in person to the DMV and finally did it. I wouldn't let them get away with stopping me from exercising my right.

OK, in Texas, you need to keep personal records for tax purposes for three years. Employers must keep personnel records for 4 years after the date of termination of employment. Our electoral system in Australia is not perfect, but because we have compulsory voting (or turning up to hand in a a ballot paper) rather than there being no effort to make our voting difficult, everything possible is done to make it easy to vote. We have an independent Electoral Commission - AEC - which provides a number of alternative ways for us to vote, including for those in hospital, overseas or in isolated areas. Our pollies (Australian for politicians) know that we (18 years+) are all voters so don't anger us by making voting problematic. The AEC obtains feedback from voters to improve future election processes. They have a website which makes everything clear (check it out with a google search of Australian Electoral Commission). Most Aussies who vote in person rarely wait more than 10 minutes to cast their vote and the waiting is usually fun with community fundraising including the sale of democracy sausages. If they made voting difficult, we would be asking why are you you afraid of our vote? What are you trying to hide? We only have to register once in our lifetime, notifying the commission of relevant changes such as address or name changes. There is definitely no room for voter suppression.

It's a lot easier for a young person to remember details from their first voter registration than someone with 40-60 years behind them. I sense age discrimination here.
I would just tell them to use both SS number and Drivers license number on the application. That way it will not be returned. I dont remember what I used on my voter application when I was 18. I am now 64 and vote by mail as I am disabled. I live in Florida and checked on line to make sure my info was correct.

I've never needed to vote by mail, but my signature got shorter and less legible the older I got. It seems to have stabilized but I have no idea what it looked like 30+ years ago! Now basically it's legible first and last letters, with a dot in the middle for the i. Doctor style signature lol.

My Mom is 81, doesn't see well, hear well, understand everything well, or have a computer. The one thing she puts a lot of work into is making sure that she researches which candidate she wants to vote for. There should absolutely be some kind of minimum standard for how states are allowed to conduct elections. Above and beyond that, they can proceed how they like, but we've seen both historically and recently, that if given a chance, there are some states that will f it up every time. On purpose. So under the Texas mail in voting regulations, a state as large as, well Texas, and if you live way the hell away from a voting location, you can't vote by mail. @@TheGoofy1932 To follow on from some earlier comment, with compulsory voting and an independent electoral commission, voter suppression is counter productive for politicians. They have to earn a majority of votes from every eligible voter. It doesn't necessarily make our politicians any better, but they do know that every 18+ citizen will be choosing between them and other candidates, including members of minor parties and independent candidates.
Republicans wrote the laws in such a complicated and mysterious way that their uneducated base also can't figure it out, but I'm guessing we will see those white Republican voters get their ballots fixed asap while they drag out the time for others.
Mail-In Ballots aren't that complicated. They are simple enough to use as a tool to commit Voter fraud and sway elections to favor your preferred political candidate. New Jersey is a very strong Democratic voter base and the overwhelming majority of their sitting politicians are Democrats. Why isn't CNN critical of New Jersey? Do you actually think a US Presidential candidate with Dementia who ran a campaign from his basement and had minimal, very edited contact with the public garnered the most votes for a US president in history by legitimacy? Mail-In ballots are very prone to Fraud by Duplication and Harvesting (registering invalids and deceased people then voting on their behalf by the thousands). The US should have compulsory voting the same as Australia. Then you'd get 95% voter turnout and voter suppression would be a thing of the past. Compulsory voting protects your right to vote, and gives a better representation of what the majority of the electorate really wants.

When Prop 13 passed, the rich property owners refused to fund the schools. Today that proposition still has an effect on property tax rates. The result was California had some of the best public schools and smart students started the tech revolution here in Silicon Valley. Today teachers have to spend their hard earned money to pay for supplies and California schools rate in the bottom. My belief is that students can get a good quality education by doing it online. When I turned 54 I decided to go back and get my Bachelors degree. I did it completely online. Doing online is a different adventure. One of the first classes I took was to develop my critical thinking skills. Everyone has a portion of their brain dedicated for critical thinking. You would be surprised how much knowledge we can gain just by using your brain. What a concept, safety from Covid by keeping us studying at home with no sickness brought home from school.

Thousands of seniors are being disenfranchised from voting in the upcoming primaries, and here's why:
Back when I got my driver's license, your social security number Was your driver's license number.
Hundreds of thousands of people over 65 are having their applications for mail-in ballots rejected because they are putting down their Current driver's license numbers.
Given the choice to write their social security number on one line or write their driver's license number on another line, maybe they wanted to go with the "safer" option, pulled out their driver's license, and wrote down that number.
Maybe They Couldn't Remember that 46 years ago, their Original DL number Was their Social Security number, and this would not match their "Original Voter Registration".
And the entire application is rejected.
Certainly, presumably, there is no explanation of this on the new Forms.

I'm glad I'm Canadian. The process for me to register for voting is I check a box when I file my income tax, to allow my info to be given to Elections Canada. Also, when I vote, it takes me all of 15-20 minutes to walk to the polls, vote and walk home. There are also water fountains there, so I don't have to worry about a law against someone bringing me water.
We (Canadans) also vote with paper and pencil like we have done forever, the same way all across the country!

Our electoral system in Australia is not perfect, but because we have compulsory voting (or turning up to hand in a a ballot paper) rather than there being no effort to make our voting difficult, everything possible is done to make it easy to vote. We have an independent Electoral Commission - AEC - which provides a number of alternative ways for us to vote, including for those in hospital, overseas or in isolated areas. Our pollies (Australian for politicians) know that we (18 years+) are all voters so don't anger us by making voting problematic. The AEC obtains feedback from voters to improve future election processes. They have a website which makes everything clear (check it out with a google search of Australian Electoral Commission). Most Aussies who vote in person rarely wait more than 10 minutes to cast their vote and the waiting is usually fun with community fundraising including the sale of democracy sausages. If they made voting difficult, we would be asking why are you you afraid of our vote? What are you trying to hide? We only have to register once in our lifetime, notifying the commission of relevant changes such as address or name changes. There is definitely no room for voter suppression.
It's too late at this point. We're past the point of no return. Be prepared. We're on a steep ride to destruction!

They have to earn a majority of votes from every eligible voter. Mail-In Ballots aren't that complicated. They are simple enough to use as a tool to commit Voter fraud and sway elections to favor your preferred political candidate. Mail-In ballots are very prone to Fraud by Duplication and Harvesting (registering invalids and deceased people then voting on their behalf by the thousands). It doesn't take millions of votes to gain a state's electoral college. It only takes a few thousand. Their response about parents demanding their children get back in school is gross. There are huge issues with schools trying to maintain classes amidst a pandemic. Students and teachers are still getting infected, necessary quarantines create problems, and inadequate Covid-19 protocols worsen the problems.
It makes no sense to assume that because it’s in SF that the parents are progressive. There are conservatives in the Bay Area who are perfectly willing to ignore safety concerns; like anywhere else.

I believe that these voting restrictions are doing exactly as the were intended. Make it harder to vote so that the minority party gains control. Sounds like we are borderline becoming a fascist society. I fear democracy is in danger.
As far as education goes, I blame the Republicans for some of the problems. When Prop 13 passed, the rich property owners refused to fund the schools. Today that proposition still has an effect on property tax rates. The result was California had some of the best public schools and smart students started the tech revolution here in Silicon Valley. Today teachers have to spend their hard earned money to pay for supplies and California schools rate in the bottom. My belief is that students can get a good quality education by doing it online. When I turned 54 I decided to go back and get my Bachelors degree. I did it completely online. Doing online is a different adventure. One of the first classes I took was to develop my critical thinking skills. Everyone has a portion of their brain dedicated for critical thinking. You would be surprised how much knowledge we can gain just by using your brain. What a concept, safety from Covid by keeping us studying at home with no sickness brought home from school.
