Definitely my top 3 cinema experiences of last year. I think it’s the overall aesthetic and blending of classic sci-fi tropes that makes it both familiar and new. I can definitely see why it’s not for everyone, but knowing the rest of Edward’s filmography - it’s very much his vision and way of working.
I think your comments are spot-on. Besides its cool production design, there isn't an original bone its body. No conventional, narrative film at this point in cinema history is truly "original" in all respects, but even frequently explored themes and ideas can be given a different spin or presented in unexpected or novel ways. This movie was both shopworn and predictable.
I really enjoyed The Creator. The only weakness I see in the film is the relationship between Joshua and Alphie wasn't developed enough. Another 5-10 minutes alone talking would have helped. This film IMHO will be like Bladerunner. It will take 20 years for people to truly appreciate it. As for Akira I believe Gareth Edwards is the only director capable of getting the US remake done right, but he'll need complete creative control.
I’ve seen a lot of names floating around regarding the potential Akira remake - Edwards would be near to the top of my list of suitable filmmakers. I know Taika Waititi was mentioned a while back - I don’t think I’d be on board with that!
Something that works to the detriment of a lot of films now is this need to “save cinema”. When something is labelled like that you end up going into the cinema expecting a life-changing experience, with the film being one of the greatest of all time. I’ve yet to see The Creator but just from a visual standpoint it looks really interesting.
I did enjoy "The Creator," but found it hard to emotionally invest in the characters and performances, which I feel the film really leaned on. Some of the effects and set pieces were extraordinary though and some cool ideas as well. Nice review!
It’s not just you, Elliot, I feel the same way about this film. I never really connected with any characters but I enjoyed the ride and thought the film was a good one but is it one I feel I need to have in my collection that I’m more carefully curating now? Not really. I went to see this film a couple of times in the theatre mostly to throw my support to making more original science fiction films as I have long been burnt out on the Marvel and Star Wars cash grab machines.
Seen it twice as well, in the cinema, enjoyed it and it looked and sounded great but falls short of being an essential modern sci-fi film. Its not original from the point of view that its a mish mash of different sci-fi movies that the director has obviously been influenced by and grew up loving . I think Gareth Edwards is capable of making a genre defining sci-fi film, and I fell in love with his debut Monsters and the tricks he employed to convey such a convincing world with very little budget, but having seen the Creator I think it falls short of his potential to deliver something truly special and timeless.
I liked it with all the same reservations. An assembly of other movies and poorly developed characters. That said, we enjoyed it. Loved the aspect ratio - unusual.
I really enjoyed The Creator a lot. Also, I did notice quite a few crying in the theater when I saw it so it felt like at least my group connected with it.
It’s hardly original, but it was entertaining and nicely shot and directed. The majority of mainstream Hollywood movies are far from original, they are mainly remakes, sequels and endless Superhero movies and bad CGI cartoons (a couple of exceptions from the past few years would be Pixar’s Coco and Soul). Personally I prefer independent, cult and classic movies.
Enjoyed it, though many reviews have been lukewarm. I perceived it as a commentary on the colonial and imperialist attitude of the west in particular and also on genocide which crops up in our cultures from time to time especially settler colonialism. The east being the victim of this seemed particularly pertinent and the disregard for rights and life. The Military industrial and media complex takes a big role as well as surveillance. I have heard arguments the plot doesnt make sense - but i found it easy to follow and if i have any negatives about the movie it is maybe that it does lack some focus and character development was lacking to a degree.
It was a solid, visual spectacle. But it wasn't doing anything that its sci-fi contemporaries haven't done (and done better) already. I will say that it is another - box office wise - disappointment; along with BR 2049, and to a lesser extent, Dune, The Creator is another hard sci-fi, big budget film that hasn't quite captured mainstream audiences. But yeah, the likes of Dune and 2049... and going back a bit further, District 9, did this much, much better. It's hardly a return to Kubrick or Tarkovsky, but it is a fun time overall.
The Creator is what happens when I do not care about the characters. Gareth Edwards might be a solid director but with all of his films (yes, even Rogue One) there's this alienating feel of characterization being kept at arms length. Because of that I can never be immersed in his films.
I thought it was overall an enjoyable film and certainly looked great as you mentioned. But it did feel like there was something lacking to make this an outright classic. You probably covered some of those gaps with your points. So overall a very good film in its own right but I think it's a stretch to maybe be saying it's the "saviour" of sci-fi on film! I don't think the film is good enough overall for that accolade personally but it is a very good albeit flawed film IMHO.
I enjoyed the visuals, they were beautiful indeed. The film itself I didn't enjoy. The story felt dumb and uninspired, and character development was terrible. In the end it felt like another potentially great film that was let down by a lousy script.
This had the potential of being great but was let down by a rushed weak script. I like films that ask a bit more from their audience & unfortunately this film spoon feeds from start to finish.
I loved the film. It's on my Top Five of 2023. But I do consider it a "Flawed" Masterpiece. And I do feel that like "BLADE RUNNER", "THE THING" etc (films that were initially panned and box office flops), it will be respected as time goes on. I'm glad I saw it in IMAX. It looked AMAZING!!!
I wanted to love this film. That didnt happen. I loved the look and the general idea arc, but the story was just hollow, with a predictable but nonsensical ending. It's caused me to waiver on buying the 4k.
Its not even the most original or interesting scifi movie from 2023. Let alone the last few years. I don't understand how many "scifi fans' don't even watch many of the scifi movies that come out.

Its a sci fi version of The Golden child (1986)

Agreed. In my top 3 easy.

The ending was so rushed it felt it was cut by twenty minutes. A solid 6/10.
I did enjoy "The Creator," but found it hard to emotionally invest in the characters and performances, which I feel the film really leaned on. Some of the effects and set pieces were extraordinary though and some cool ideas as well. Nice review!
The bit when the army launches the attack on the town with those running robots was very cool! Thanks for watching Ken 😎
@@ElliotCoen Ohhh yeah dude! My favorite part honestly. Lol

Yet to watch.
( Recommend the much underrated Sunshine ).
I’ve never seen Sunshine but will prioritise it thanks to your recommendation Jonathan!
I second the Sunshine shout out
I third the Sunshine recommendation
Event Horizon.
Great Review Elliot! I still need to watch this.
Thanks so much! Let me know what you think when you get round to it. I think it’s just gone on Disney+ too, at least here in UK

Wanting this and Oppenheimer on 4k (saw both at cinema) but £50 for 2 films is a bit too much for me so will have to wait till I can get 2 for £30.
I can’t fault that! 4Ks are expensive on release. Enjoy them when you get them!
Thanks
John David Washington was great in both Tenet and The Creator

Looks fantastic but lost interest in the movie after 30 mins. Id love to see TW go down this route (visually) with his live action Akira.
It's style over substance. The story is very basic and if you think about for a few moments nothing makes any sense.
So, Gareth Edwards is like the next James Cameron?
Great review . My exact sentiments .looked great but a bit souless .
I enjoyed the visuals, they were beautiful indeed. The film itself I didn't enjoy. The story felt dumb and uninspired, and character development was terrible. In the end it felt like another potentially great film that was let down by a lousy script.
Godzilla, Rogue One and this all look great but the characters are so dull.
This had the potential of being great but was let down by a rushed weak script.

I wanted to like it, but with no difference between the A.I. and human characters, it was pointless.

MASTERPIECE
Easy answer, no intriguing plot, cliché ending, main actor don’t care for him, should leave Hollywood…just nice visuals…😂😂😂
It was shit
Great insight.
