- In the six years we've been driving electric cars, there are things we love and can't live without. But what about newbies? I go on a test drive with people who've never driven an EV before to get their first impressions.

I've been driving 50+ years and had dozens of cars including V12 Daimlers, but swapped to evs a few years ago and would never dream of an ice car again. We still giggle like school kids when I floor our Tesla...
Same here, many years driving different cars. Even more so now with a company car change every 2 yrs and if I have to fly somewhere I hire cars at airports, have had some lovely cars to drive.
However I hired a Polestar 2 recently in Scotland for 2 weeks, it was a joy to drive, build quality as good if not better than most and the android automotive was the best I’ve used. Charging was no problem at all, in fact it taught me to take a 20-30 min break on long journeys rather than haring across land only to arrive in a rush at my next work appointment.
I was singing it’s praises for weeks, usually it would have been yeah it was a nice car but I’m glad I’m in my own.
Needless to say I’m driving an EV now and so is my Wife, she even said to me how she loves her car, she’s like Flaviana, grounded doesn’t go for the flash or ‘must have’. But even she realised it’s the way to go. She even has a free charger use at the local Sainsbury’s! Win win!!
I absolutely agree, been driving 45 years had a Leaf 5 years ago and said I'd never go back from day one, just bought 2016 facelift model S and gets me to 60 in 3.9 seconds, Makes me laugh too,

I’m 64 and have driven everything ice. I’m now disabled and am going to order my first ev. I want a Skoda Enyaq, but the new 24 model is released and it’s not on Motability yet. I’m disappointed that I can’t order one. It seems very poor of Skoda and Motability to not have this sorted as the cars were announced months ago.
@@niptodstan - unfortunately we found Skoda impossible to deal with and went elsewhere.
Flaviana acting all calm, layed back and smiling feels really unsettling. Kind of like before a huge storm approaches and all for a sudden all the birds stop singing. 😂
Just teasing! I genuinely enjoy the positivity you both bring - love your videos!
With one foot driving, honestly think it's as different to drive as going from manual to automatic. not harder, just different.
Totally agree with all you and Flaviana are saying about EV ownership. Most none-EV-users are usually pleasantly surprised after the first ride, but what is holding back many of them (apart from the price) is the lack of charging experience. As they are so used to petrol car behaviour (fill it up when it's empty) they worry way too much about charging and range. It needs a few weeks or trips with an EV to realise that this isn't an issue at all.
Love electric cars - acceleration, quiet, reduced local pollution, one pedal driving - but it is still a lot easier and cheaper if you are able to charge at home or work. I might not recommend the switch yet for people in the UK without those options.
Flaviana is absolutely correct, an EV is much smoother than an ordinary automatic car. I also agree about the car being ready to go and not have to think about filling up with petrol. Charging on a long journey is fine because you need to stop for a coffee and a comfort stop which often takes longer than the charging time.
Insurance.... since it came up in your video...I must extol the virtues of LV insurance for my EV. Came up with the lowest premium and only one of two less than a grand per year. Since then, have moved other insurances to them as they just seem to be on-the-ball. Well done LV.
Agree with everything here. Still loving my EV. I had been to Como in the ICE car but this years trip to Sicily was so much less stressful....apart from one test of the brakes just outside Bologna (nobody hit anybody). Still loving the car.
Great to hear a positive insurance story for a change!
Phillip, did you forget to adjust your seating position and your steering wheel??? It looked like your head was going to hit the ceiling and you were scrunched into a tiny 1960s mini!! hehe. Oh well, hope you enjoyed the drive!
My car’s exhaust fell off last week which was expensive. That doesn’t happen in an EV. I think the used market is starting to get interesting and hopefully when we are forced to replace our cars it will be electric all the way. There are so many supposed issues with EVs but the real problem people have is purchase price. That situation is improving. The cars seem great and I look forward to owning one.
A very enjoyable "short", you should do more of these real-world interviews of EV experiences
Haha, Flaviana with no outbursts! She’s always right though… more automatic than an automatic, braking without braking, no more petrol station visits… thanks!
My son lives south of Limoges in France and from Maidstone where I live it is a little over 500 miles. In the summer we travelled to see him and only charged up twice on the way there and on the way back. Arrived with 100 miles still in my EV6 and it was glorious. Charging was a non event as there were chargers everywhere and we stopped at one with just one charger in a leafy l'aire and achieved 254 Kwh charging rate and we were charged and ready to go almost before our ablutions were finished! Awesome
Wonderful to hear! I really need to try out the EV6 one of these days.
It is a truly beautiful car to drive. I love it. Shout when you're in Maidstone lol@@MrEV
The continental charging infrastructure is light years ahead of the UK. As you say, they are everywhere. I drove to Budapest this year. I elected to use only IONITY chargers as they were free. The max distance between them was 70 miles and there were at least 2 more charging stations with at least 300kW chargers between each IONITY one. Car only needed 4 charges of 35 mins each to cover 1200 miles (we actually stopped way more than 4 times but didnt bother charging each time)
We attended Fully Charged in Harrogate this year and just 2 weeks ago, bought a 2nd hand Renault Zoe (2018) for my daughter and me as a runabout. We also have a BMW X1 auto, which is very quiet and fast and the Zoe feels just the same, if not more exciting, in a small sports car way!
I drove my wife's ICE Mazda 2 yesterday and it feels and sounds like a car with a severe chest infection, by comparison.
Flaviana is now using a lot more Brit-speak words though her Italian accent has hardly changed at all. Her candor is so refreshing. Like her hair too!
LOL...thank you Mr. and Mrs. Car!
Yes! We need more videos like that! My wife totally agrees with Flaviana.
I had my nephew over last week and had a discussion about EVs. It is unbelievable how much crap some media are throwing at EVs. He was literally terrified of being forced to drive EV in the not too distance future and how miserable his life would then become. The list of inaccurate information he was giving me is simply ridiculous. And it was impossible to debunk some of that, it was sooooo fixed in his mind... I simply told him that we have over 2 years of experience with the EV, we love it, we would never go back, we fight who's going to get the EV when we need two cars at the same time - the second is an ICE - and how there is a world of difference between using an EV and the crap in the media about it.
Finally my rant on one pedal driving: I've tried it many many times, I always go back to min regen. Coasting is slightly more economical. And when you push the brake pedal on an EV, it is not using the pads, it is using regen first and only for the last meter it uses the pads. With one pedal I tend to use the inverter more, the ride is less smooth and the inverter looses more energy to heat. It is perfectly possible to coast with one pedal, but I find it to be easier with min regen. That may be just me. So I do not agree one pedal driving is so very important. Regen is important, very important, but you do not need one pedal to full stop for this. What is more important to me is how much power regen can take, the more the better. So that with an emergency breaking, as much as possible goes back to storage. So having the option to do one pedal or set it to max coasting is important, as obviously many people think one pedal driving is a big deal. I'm just not one of them.
I use one pedal drive always, and also adaptive cruise control where I can. It seems to give me a good MPKwh, Tested over 5 years and nearly 100K miles. Much of my driving is on Motorways and open roads where constant speeds are best and regen normally does not happen.
Yes, I'm hearing a lot of the same things from people who swallow everything they hear/read from the media. It's a shame because so much of it is easily refutable but for anyone that's already suspicious of EVs, it's confirmation bias.
As for one-pedal driving, I find it can be a bit jerky and vomit-inducing for passengers. I tend to go for strong regeneration around town and then far less on the motorway. It's great having the option to change it though as everyone has different preferences!
I have been driving nearly 50 years and the EV is by far the better driving experience. Going from my Volvo XC40 Twin EV to my manual diesel work van is like driving a Ford Model T by comparison. Cost wise - I lease through work and my overall motoring costs for the Volvo (including insurance) is £50 per month less than the diesel Jaguar I owned before. As ever, Flaviana rocks, but we need more recipes 😁
More recipes coming!
Just found your channel, love the Ioniq 5 and also shit with languages.
Slightly personal question but what was the story behind mini stroke? (it popped up on twitter) V glad you are ok.
Best, Will Mac
Thanks Will! I had a mini-stroke back during Covid lockdown. I've still no idea what caused it! Stress or lack of sleep perhaps as I wasn't sleeping much back then. It seems I do have quite high blood pressure sometimes and a client had cut a lot of my hours during lockdown so that didn't help!
I drove an EV for the first time last Monday when my ICE Golf was being serviced. Unfortunately the main dealers only have EVs as courtesy cars but at least it forced me to drive a 2 pedal car for the first time in over 60 years.
A fascinating experience and experiment but obviously spoiled by looking at the SOC all the time and making sure I did not use too many accessories. Naturally I don't have any home charger and do not relish having to hang around at some drafty, wet charging stall finding out how and what method I need to put some juice back into the car.
The only real benefit of the day was that I drove a car without a clutch for the first time and this will lead me to buying an automatic ICE car next time. Many thanks EV experience.😊
Why did you need to worry about the SoC and accessories (which use a minuscule amount of power)?! Surely it was a modern EV with sufficient range, and not a G-wiz or something!
You can pay at the vast majority of chargers with contactless payments now so not too much of an issue. Provided you have an umbrella! 😀
@@MrEV
In all fairness I didn't name the car but it was a VW E-UP and had about 136 mile range as given to me. I had no intention of driving around all day in it but just a get-me-home vehicle. I have to admit that the four levels or regen were excellent and provided a novel, relaxed way of driving.
You are clearly an EV devotee and I respect that but it is not for me with the current charging structure in the London Borough in which I live. At well over 80 years old the last thing I want to do is struggle with various charging leads and socketry whilst getting soaked, as someone did at my local Supermarket whilst attaching his cable to one of the four slow chargers there. Apart from shopping or sitting in the car there was nothing else to do. That scenario is dire IMHO.
Not for me but keep up the good work and entertaining videos.
Good to know you have at least tried an electric car.
Reputedly the VW EV you tried is pretty good, but was aimed at people doing mostly short local journeys. Not sure what your ICE vehicle is so it would be difficult to compare. Regarding charging, your local supermarket would expect you to be doing some shopping whilst you were plugged in. That way you wouldn’t have been waiting for the car, rather, it would be waiting for you. Also, whilst I understand many people cannot charge at home, those that can reap big financial rewards especially with off-peak tariffs - and if they charge whilst asleep overnight, they are never kept waiting. Filling up at home in an ICE vehicle is not an option unless you have your own pump, or you have walked with a petrol can from your nearest filling station. Otherwise you have to drive to the filling and station and back first.
Fully understand why you would choose an automatic for your next car. Suggest you try a few EV’s before you opt for another ICE vehicle. You may be surprised at how good many of them are.
We don't do a lot of miles in our E-Niro, but our biggest issue with it is the lack of decent mobile phone signal round where we live - it makes the app pretty useless, and so much of the goodness of an EV is accessed from an app nowadays. If Kia had picked anyone else other than vodafone to partner with, we'd probably be ok !!
I'm with you there! Kia Connect is useless much of the time. And it gives up completely if you park it somewhere without any signal and needs resetting!
My hubby and I will see how the charging networks and range goes with this, because from the other research we have done, the charging network doesn’t live up to the hype, the range of these cars; ridiculous. Not practical for people wanting to go on longer journeys.
The price and depreciation- will
bankrupt us. Some insurance companies are refusing to insure electric cars or putting the prices up….
So we will run our diesels into the ground until charging is easier, range is longer and the price of the cars isn’t so ridiculous, I have a normal job, I am not rich!
I know I am in the minority in these comments, so nervous of commenting, but there is it, my opinion! 😂🙈
You shouldn't be nervous about commenting as these are valid concerns!
Depreciation on any new car is terrible, but EVs recently (partly thanks to Tesla cutting prices like crazy) have definitely been hit hard. It's starting to improve again though.
We've not finished the video about it, but we just bought a 3-year-old Kia e-Niro. It has a realistic 280 mile range (300 miles when I picked it up, even with motorway driving!), 4-year warranty remaining, and I got it for £19k. Insurance was £677 by the way - it was £485 when we last had an e-Niro in 2020, so yes, it's gone up a bit but not by the silly amounts I've seen mentioned in the press. (That's also without a no-claims bonus). Obviously everyone's case is different but it's not anything to worry too much about.
I know £19k is still a LOT of money, but getting a used car with finance is a pretty good way of getting an EV as it takes the heavy initial depreciation out of the equation somewhat.
As for long journeys, we just came back from a trip from Canterbury to Norwich. 3 hours each way (160 miles). No charging needed on the way there and back, and we just topped-up the battery in a car park while we shopped.
So although the range is obviously much less than most ICE cars, it's still very usable. Even if we were going a much longer way, we'd be happy to stop at the services and charge while eating after three hours of driving.
I'm not going to lie and say it's always easy, and I suppose there's quite a learning curve, but the pros far outweigh the cons.
@@MrEV thank you! That sounds quite doable, we don’t do finance in our house, we are weirdos, but in a good way (that’s what we say anyway 🤣). So we will be saving and buying outright, so it will have to an amount we will have in a number of years from now. Hopefully things will change more for the better and we will find it viable. We are sure to watch your next one!
@@gemmac3371 Nothing weird about that! We bought our Leaf outright. It's nice to actually own something!
Thanks for clarifying at 0:13 who was who 😄
I'm so glad I got the labels round the right way or there'd be instant divorce proceedings!
2 Years into owning a Polestar 2 and I'm just not happy taking it around Europe as I often do for business. Germany is all fun until you get to the eastern part where DC chargers are few and far between and don't even get me started on Belgium or France.
Unless things change for the better (including battery range in the cold!) my next car will *not* be an EV.
The tech and infrastructure simply isn't there (yet).
I found the same with Germany. I was quite surprised and disappointed.
I've heard nothing but good things about France though. Don't all the services now have decent hubs? (Baralle remains terrible, I know.)
What's the Subaru EV that Phillip was driving?
That's the Solterra. I didn't drive it myself but it seemed pleasant enough.
Driving is even more enjoyable in an EV than it was in ICE vehicles. Driving a rental or loaner ICE vehicle now feels like a punishment, it's so depressing.
EVs are much more pleasant to drive, i'd rather drive my 2011 nissan leaf than my gas Lexus.
Andrew I cannot put all notifications on , odd
You mean the bell icon? That is odd!
Yep @@MrEV just for this video for you, haven't checked your other videos. ill do that later.

@MrEV So logged out no difference, had to unsubscribe and re subscribe now works. Maybe one off just for me on your channel, sorry to have bothered you. Keep up the excellent work..
EV’s are great and Andrew is nice, but really Flaviana is the star of the show. So give the people what they want, change the name of the channel to ‘My Italian Wife’ and just post videos of her getting angry and complaining about stuff, your views would skyrocket and so would your bank balance! 😄
If I could get her to willingly appear in videos more often, I would!
It depends on the topic! But sure, having a pragmatic, non-petrolhead opinion is super valuable. Seeing the same on a french channel (Electric Vince iirc), the wife's input is often based on different things, and that gives a more complete understanding.
😮
No sound
Could you try on another device if you can, please? I've not had any other complaints?!
Imagine this .... A World where every one had only ever driven EVs and you tried to introduce the concept of petrol and diesel cars. Can you imagine trying to explain how you get them to work?
Salesman - "OK, you pour several gallons of highly flammable liquid into it, just below where your kids sit. The flammable liquid is only available at special distribution centres. It will cost you about 100 quid every time you visit. Then you set fire to it, in millions of controlled explosions, using thousands of interlocking gears, pistons, belts. They you keep waggling this gear stick every minute or so, to make sure the engine doesn't stall or explode. Every year or so you must change all the oil, belts, clutch, brakes".
Can you imagine trying to sell that concept? Not to mention the constant distribution of millions of gallons of flammable liquids, imported from various dictatorships and war zones around the planet.
True! I made a video ages ago with that sort of idea in mind actually!

I'm very lucky that she puts up with me doing these videos!

Scripted ones pay the bills! But yes, it’s the last of this series for ElectriX. Another Flaviana video coming very soon!
Great episode Andrew and Flaviana! I teach learner drivers in a Tesla Model 3. My 17 year old learner drivers are fully aware of sustainable energy, low emissions, and... have no intention of learning how to deal with clutches, manual transmission, matching road speed, gradient and RPM to gears etc. More mature learner drivers who gave up driving years ago through being shouted at by driving instructors because they had difficulty understanding clutches, manual transmission, matching road speed, gradient and RPM to gears... are relieved when they discover just how easy it is to drive an EV. No clutch. No gears. No gas. No fuss!
I have only found ONE snag with owning an EV, my personal mileage has gone right up, it's so cheap to drive and so more pleasant.
Same here!
this has been noticed in several countries overall statistics.
My spouse, who rates cars purely in terms of comfort and convenience, loves our EV. She doesn't care much about acceleration or regenerative braking but she likes the quite smooth ride of the EV. That and never going to a gas station. It is not as good as a gas car, it is much better.
More content with Flaviana please... her honest opinion as (a non - car person) is very refreshing in this space,- and very similar I am sure, to many of our wive's and partners who just want a car to go from A to B without the fuss or adjectives a car journalist would use.
Acceleration and smoothness are the key. It's so hard to go back to an ICE car after driving EVs. Do you know of a good hire car companies that rents EVs at holiday time??
In the UK or abroad?
@@MrEV UK please
@@adrianupnorth I've used evisionevs.co.uk a few times. Great selection of EVs and lovely people in my experience. They can drop the car off to you too. Other than that, I think the big companies like Hertz/Europcar/Enterprise have some EVs on offer as well, although never enough!
Your bride hit the nail on the head when she said it’s more automatic than an automatic.
For those who think that playing with gears and stuff is exciting, I simply don't get it. But hey, your choice.
You are right, EV driving is easy and once you have the EV, cheap as a lot less maintenance. If you can charge at home and grab a cheap overnight tariff, mileage will cost a round a tenth of an ICE cars fuel cost.
I would never go back to an ICE car and now lots of EV's can give over 200 miles of range whatever the weather, so again the number of charges away from home is minimal and a good chance of grabbing a coffee and stretch of the legs on those very long trips.
Have driven mine from Lincolnshire to Disneyland Paris, stopping when we needed to stop and charging at those times, so at Euro Tunnel, then a services in France, then again at Disneyland Paris. Return was easy as next stop at Euro Tunnel, than Maidstone services for food and drink. Car had enough range to get home by the time we came out of services. Nearly 900 miles at a cost of £35 thanks to a few free charges along the way! Never had free petrol before...
Less than half what I get in my Gold after filling to the brim (500 miles) and petrol stations with overhead protection from the weather to boot.
I have an EV and an ICE that is due to be replaced next year. Trouble is that until the charging network gets super reliable I will always keep an ICE in the garage for long runs or towing.
I think that’s fairly sensible. Especially if towing long distances which, although possible in an EV, isn’t going to be much fun to unhitch at most chargers.
Had my model 3, 2 weeks now. Honestly best thing ive owned and this is well over 50 vehicles. Its smooth, acceleration is great, one pedal driving excellent, no issues with charging, but dont do high miles. And so chaep to run. Doubt I'll ever buy an ice car again.
50 vehicles! Wow. Quite an endorsement then!
@@MrEV far too many really. From a mini to a porsche. Last car before the ev was a 430 hp m140i bmw. Sounded amazing and quick, but this is just such a good combination of quick and chilled if you require all in the same package. Sound system although the basic package easily matches the hk system bmw fit, if not a little better.
"Yeh, you go" ... cracked me up that one 😂😂😂😂
In the U.K. electric cars are great for town driving or a 50 mile radius trip and then back home to recharge at the standard 7Kw. Any longer trips then your in the hands of the 14 or so private charging companies that form the charging infrastructure and the cost using these chargers become very exorbitant to say the least. Just look up Lee MacMasters videos to see his first hand experience of these 14 or so private charging companies costs.
A few days ago we drove 3 hours/160 miles in a Kia e-Niro from Canterbury to Norwich - just slow charged in a car park for a few hours when we looked around the town - then drove back with plenty of battery to spare. We didn't need to use one rapid charger and, although we stopped en-route, it was just for a toilet break.
So they're certainly not just for town driving. I agree some of the companies are very expensive right now, and especially with inefficient cars (Macmaster's Taycan for instance), but for anyone that can charge at home, EVs still work out far cheaper to run in most cases.
my 2 month old EV is supposed to have a top speed of 99 MPH but will only do 50 MPH, the dealer is currently baffled and contacting the chinese manufacturer, I think it is in limp mode, but they have never met this before, has anyone else had this problem, my MG ZS never had this problem
Fascinating. I've never heard of that! It does sound like tortoise mode. I hope someone can help.
I'm a "driver" and I still love driving our first ev. My wife is a "get from a to b" sort of driver but even she enjoys driving the Ioniq38kWh and are both a lot more relaxed after driving it too.
No home charging but we have subscription for cheaper charging and its no bother, just do it while shopping or having a coffee, or getting some work done. Maybe one day ill work out how we can charge at home or the council will put in some ac chargers in our parking bay.
That's great to hear. I should interview you for a future episode about having no home charging!
I'm using a Honda Jazz Hybrid as a gateway drug to an EV. The electric motor drives the wheels all the time with the ICE engine acting as a generator and only rarely cutting in to take over at high speeds or under very heavy acceleration. Flaviana's description of more automatic than an automatic is spot on. I had a CVT auto before this car and that was easy to drive but noisy. Where we live EVs are noticeably more common than even a year ago. I think a tipping point has been reached.
The Jazz seems a great little car! Hybrids are brilliant as a gateway drug. I've seen many more EVs driving around recently too.
Yes they are fun to drive, i have a i3, and i love it to bits, but if you do not have a driveway its a pain in the butt to charge, at first its so complicated, charging at home is super cheap, but blooming expensive if you use public chargers, and some use apps like BLINK, and i wish it was cheaper to charge, 79p per kw is taking the piss.
That's true. If I didn't have home charging, it'd certainly be more of a pain. I'm planning a video about it actually as it'll be interesting to see how feasible it is to live without the luxury of home charging for a month. (My nearest rapid hub is 25 minutes away.)
I drive Ioniq 5 since September, I don’t have access to home charger. Only use public ones, some AC some DC. Never had any problems, and here in Scotland free charging is still available at some places. I pay 20 or 40 pence per kW depending on a speed of a charger, still cheaper than my old diesel
I do. It was a Tesla model 3. So responsive and quick!
That's a fantastic first EV to try!
