When this first aired, I remember thinking they well and truly seem like the perfect couple. Looking back on it now, I realise there's no way they would work as a couple. Despite their shared love of literature, Ken would never adapt to her way of living. She's way more adventurous than he is, moving around from place to place like a free spirit, something Ken never was. Also, when she describes her friends, they sound a lot more adventurous and bohemian than Ken too, and he wouldn't even fit into her social circle. That relationship would go sour quickly and he'd end up regretting leaving not just Deirdre and his family, but also the street where he has always lived. It's all where he truly belongs and where he's content to be. The beermat was indicative of that, as well as Deirdre being his soul mate, as they had been through lots together in the past, and she was also content to remain where she is. This was all just a brief fantasy for Ken that would never have truly worked.
You missed a lot of important scenes, such as Deride always asking where Ken had been going all the time, Ken talking to Ted about his dilemma, Audrey warning him and Peter convincing him not to leave.
Was meant to be the return of Joanna Lumley's girlfriend from early 70s,but she was either unavailable or didn't want to do it,so a new character was created...🎩
Given that Deirdre has also cheated on Ken including the time she had an affair with Mike Baldwin I think it was only fair that Ken got to have his own adventure with Martha on the boat.

Ken is almost tolerable but in the end a spineless boring swine how and why Deirdre put up with him she deserved so much more may she rest in peace
Watching it like this, you almost forget Dedire was at home waiting for her Ken.
Miss such well done storylines (even if it's cheating on your love).
