- This mall has a rougher parking lot then the surface of the moon. The huge concrete structures that once stood as anchor stores now lie vacant and without purpose. Join me as we drive around and discover the Southridge Mall! An update video will come later in the year hopefully being able to explore the inside.
Disclaimer! I do not actually have any partnership with Marshall Publishing! I just like the logo.

Glad to see one of my childhood malls covered. I used to like going there for the carousel they had in the food court.
2:55 Unforgettable 😢
When that mall was new we called it South Pig or Sour Ridge...it was always dirty. Worst mall in (1984-88) DeadMoines...hahaha I think I saw Saturday Night Fever at the movie theater...and...ya, I got nothin on this mall other than The Corndog Factory was so good it made the whole food court smell like wonderfulness.
Just thought I'd say I like this video. I went there a couple times as a child. They had a food court with McDonald's, and a few other vendors. I think maybe Taco John's, Maid-Rite, and a couple other things. It was a nice mall back in the 1990s.
I remember Orange Julius!! That place was amazing, now they’re only at Valley West. Sadly.
Love that you used the most mysterious song on the internet
It’s a great song🤷♂️lol
And What Is The Mysterious Song?
if you go back now, toys r us is some medical building now-
Yup, thankfully the VA owns it. 👏👏👏
I grew up on the south side of Des Moines and spent plenty of time at this thriving and bustling mall. Then 2 years ago, after having not lived in Des Moines for 16 years I decided to go to the mall to check it out after dropping my wife off at the airport. I was shocked to see that they had essentially turned the mall inside-out by emptying the inside [with the exception of some kind of head shop and the presence of a church and a Des Moines Area Community College section] and forming a strip mall on the outside. I felt like I was in a low budget sci-fi movie.
It’s insane to see the inside of this mall in the state that it’s in. A new video is coming soon where I got inside so be sure to look forward to that!
At one time that mall even had an INDOOR water slide! I never went on it but that was quite the attraction. I also remember that when I was a kid people could still smoke indoors so I remember all of those open common spaces had people sitting and smoking around the ash trays.
Chris Whitehead interesting! I never knew it had a water slide, also yeah I can imagine everyone smoked in the malls back in the day! Lol
The way malls are closing now, I wonder if it will re-open.
it looks like valley wests twin there's only a handful of stores
that mall had a water slide inside
Almost as bad as Marshalltown
