Hello Dynaudio Academy. I recently listened to the Evoke 20 (in the beautiful white finish) and fell in love. Unfortunately, as a dad of two, I cannot afford them. Recently, I've read that the Emit 20's share a similar tweeter and mid bass driver. Are the Emits a large downgrade? Sadly, the shop where I auditioned the Evoke 20s does not carry the Emit series. Thank you!
Hi@@ramondelgado6778. It is true that they share a lot of components, and are in many was quite similar. While the Evoke is better in several ways, you will definitely regognize it as a similar speaker, especially if comparing to other brands, which will inevitably be much more different. Also consider that the difference between your own room and the in-store demo-room is likely bigger than the difference between the speakers. If you liked the Evoke 20, but it's out of reach, the Emit 20 comes pretty close, at less than half the price. /Otto, Dynaudio Academy
@@DynaudioAcademy Your reply is greatly appreciated. Can you please confirm which components are shared and what should I expect to miss going with the Emit 20? The Emit seems to be what I an afford and love that it comes in white. Thanks again!!!!
From a technical standpoint, the tweeter is the same. The woofer is the same but with steel basket instead of aluminium, and a bucking magnet to compensate for the lack of BL this causes. The cabinet is actually larger in the Emit 20, due to the sides not being slanted, so ultimate bass output is at least similar if not slightly better. The approach to the crossover design is slightly different, with a simpler design in the Emit. Most of the difference is in the cabinet design, with the Evoke cabinet being both visibly and audibly a higher-end design. Measured distortion is lower in the Evoke, and max volume before audible distortion is consequently a little higher. It's not night-and-day though. I usually don't go deep into the subjective experience, as this can be quite personal and your experience may differ from mine. But I will argue that you will experience an overall quite similar sound, but with a little less "finesse". Honestly, the visual difference is larger than the audible difference. I bought the Emit 20 last weekend and have been comparing it to the KLH Model 3 for the past few days. I’m using Marantz PM6006 and Arcam SA20 integrated amplifiers in a well treated space. Both speakers are very different but both very good! Musically I’m all over the map, rock, jazz, country, metal, orchestral, etc….IMO the Model 3s are snappier and more dynamic, the Emit 20s have a more suave, sophisticated (if muted) sound. I used Stevie Ray Vaughn’s “Tin Pan Alley aka roughest place in town” as a reference. The bass note’s through the Dyns was amazing, the guitar riffs ethereal…SRVs voice was recessed, muted even. The deep bass with the KLH was not as deed, mid bass was great, vocal attack was spectacular! Spacial cues are amazing on both speakers. These are both spectacular speakers for the money (and even more), the KLH are for the days you want to effing rock out, the Dyns for relaxing after a hard days work. I can hardly believe that speakers this good can be purchased for this few dollars! My “gold standard” speakers are Dynaudio Contour 1.3 SEs powered by Krell FPB 750 mono blocks. Hi Erin, I believe the Elac Debut 2 B6.2 speaker has that same 700Hz peak followed by a 1-2KHz dip. It also uses a pressed steel frame. In all other respects the Debut is a very good inexpensive speaker. I wish someone could identify the cause of the peak & dip & come up with a simple (non DSP) solution?
I had a similar resonance @500Hz on my pair of wavecor wf152bd06. It turned out to be a spider resonance, you could clearly see it when the mic was placed behind the cone right in front of the spider. It also went away if I lightly pushed the spider with my fingers when measuring the driver.
It would be really awesome if you could review the Evoke 20s. I'm ready to spend more serious money on my next upgrade. I'm currently using the DBR62's and I like them but I'd like nice upgrade with a pinch more clarity and hoping Evoke 20s will fit the bill.
Regarding low order filters, I don't consider the lobing effects to be an issue as the listeners height is usually well defined - normally around the tweeter level or a bit below. Sure, if you're walking around the room there will be peaks and dips but in that scenario you're probably not listening intently anyway. I personally think low order is the best topology for home listening, provided the drivers are designed with that in mind (good tweeter Xmax and well-behaved response).
Treble boost and bass boost because of too close to wall in shop. U-shaped or V-shaped! Now ask Dynaudio to send the Emit 10. They sounded more linear/flat to my ears.
I have Emit 10. After eq they are awesome. Well... except limited dynamics which is just annoying for me. But... as long as you get low distortion, good directivity - eq should do.the job and you can enjoy really good sound out of cheap speakers.
@@jdm724 well... peceived difference between loudest sound on the track and most quiet one is low. This is what i mean by that. And crossing them at 80Hz does not help
I lived with Elac unifi UB5 for almost 3 years before upgrading to wharfdale Linton. Elac UB5 bass extension is impressive for a bs speakers. No brainer deal for less than 300$
The 700Hz issue looks like a surround/cone edge resonance. The resonance looks more pronounced and is lower in frequency than most 6.5 inch "soft" cone woofers, which typically have an edge resonance around 900Hz.
Yeah, I wondered if that might be the case but it seems a good bit lower than I would have expected it to occur. Most drivers this size have that issue around 1.2 kHz.
My thoughts as well ... note the Compression Dip, any chance that's some manner of excitation nulling? I've no idea. I'm curious if observing compression data from the drivers individually, vs typical loudspeaker as a whole would reveal some insight.
Would you be able to subjectively compare the Emit 20 vs. Special 40 that you also liked? Do these do what you enjoyed from the Special 40 at a more sensible price?
Great job Erin !!! You should try & get Dynaudio to send you a core 59...... I have had them in a home 2 channel system for 4 years & nothing I've ever heard touch them at the price point & much beyond. They deserve to be measured & reviewed by you. I do use an Elysia xfilter in chain to carefully tune to taste.Thats my room & some of me for reason of why on the Elysia. Joe
Really enjoy your videos Erin. You’ve mentioned tweaking the EQ a few times with a minidsp, is there any chance you could do a video on how you approach that? Just stuff like how you choose the Order and Q for a filter. Keep up the good work, great stuff.
I don’t listen to music with all these data, numbers and graphs in mind but it’s good to know. Or maybe I don’t need to know? Because the more I know these numerical values, the more my mind is distracted away from the main reason why we listen to music. It’s all about the feelings and emotions we experience. If it gets you, it works.
The the cross-over coils were parallel and adjacent to the point of almost touching. I have no clue if that is a problem or was engineered out or just a stupid observation. Love your technical reviews. Nice work.
That resonance at 680(?) Hz, I thought at first that it might be cone edge resonance, but 680 Hz seems a bit low in frequency for a 6" woofer for it to be a cone edge resonance artifact. Does the bass driver have a vented pole?
I agree. It just seems almost a half octave lower than where I would’ve expected it to be. But I don’t know for sure. Hopefully someone from Dyn can give us some more insight.
Hi Erin. About that vertical lobing, could it just be that the acoustic centers of the drive units are not aligned well, so tweeter is much more front than the midwoofer? I would guess that if you tilt back the speaker, so that the acoustic centers align, measure it and set the reference point between the drive units, the lobes should align.
That plays apart, sure. But a steeper slope would definitely help. I’d say the slope is by far more the offender for this particular issue than time alignment.
@@ErinsAudioCorner, I was just looking at this quite weird, "tilted sweet spot" at the driver overlapping area. Feels just weird that this could be possible with time aligned drivers (pic below). The width of these lobes are for sure a result of a gentle slope. drive.google.com/file/d/1lq8WdehvHbJGHSKXgjjDCWYHzjUqYJe_/view?usp=drive_link
I think it’s time a company reaches out to you to help them design a speaker. Is this something you would consider? Do you think you would be good at it?
I don't like these cheap drivers in new Dynaudio lines. Last cheap Dynaudio speakers with great old drivers with cast baskets etc... are actives BM5 MKIII. They are greatly done. And they go low too. And I will be happy to see your review of BM5 one time.
You previously gave a glowing review to the Elac Debut Reference. Given those speakers are less expensive, why would someone buy the Emit 20 over them? (And in general I think this review is missing comparisons that would give the viewer some sense of where it fits in the market compared to other similarly priced speakers.)
I used to lust after Dynaudio drive units. If you used a high-speed camera, do you think you would be able to see out-of-phase motion between the cone and surround?
Those low-order crossovers make for a dull sound while standing or walking around a living room. I just put my old Infinitys back in the living room because of the 4th order 24db/octave crossover so my casual listening would be more enjoyable. Polk R200 went to the computer room where vertical on-axis listening is 99% of the time.
Hey Erin! Thanks for the review. I'm curious, do you think upgrading the crossover parts could help improve the speaker? Like buy it for the woofers, upgrade it to take it up another level? Or would you suggest buying a more premium unit to avoid the limitations of the woofer in that case? Thanks if you find the time to respond!
Hey Erin. Do you think you can become the Dynaudio Emit 30 for a review? I like them really and listen often much music in different genres. Love them. I would like to have some of your detailed measurements. And i think you will like the sound quality. And they can be loud. Greetings ✌🏻
There’s a fun subject! The thing with Bernon isn’t necessarily that the speakers actually change or improve. You’d also have to ask yourself why would a speaker suddenly stop changing. And then at what point is it that a speaker has changed too much. These are the things about burning that People should consider when they are asking themselves if it’s a legitimate concern or not. Typically burning is really the process of acclimating yourself to a different sound. You’ll often notice people say that some speakers are detailed. When in fact, they just have accentuated trouble. Overtime the listeners grow accustomed to this and when they hear other speakers that don’t have boosted trouble it’s a noticeable difference. In research it is shown that listeners generally prefer a speaker that is Neutral, but that is a different topic altogether.
This new Emit 20 is GREAT DISSAPOINTMENT to me. I could not believe Dynaudio use Chinese woofer made of stamped steel! And the marketing spin with the Cerotar tweeter which is crossed at 3800Hz?!
A bit disappointed in a speaker at that cost ($1700 here in Aust) that is using a stamped steel basket & a basic crossover with quality questionable parts. A better designed crossover could have easily smoothed out the top end. While the 700hz resonance is in the design of that mid woofer.
I just saw that Nubert currently has an 11% discount. So, the costs are comparable to the Dali Oberon 3 series. Does anyone know if the Dali Oberon 3 series performs well compared to the Nuboxx B40 series?
Im kinda shocked with that very bumpy FR... expected it to be more linear even though voiced. Low frequency is a big part of our listening experience so I can understand why you like it. The Diamond 12.1's FR seem more neutral, besides that so called BBC Dip.
Please suggest me this one #Emit 20 vs the #Polk r200 my amplifier is 20wpc #Class A. I am listening to pop rock hiphop and 90/80s songs? Thank you Erin
Always Like Watching your Reviews, very informative... Just like to make a suggestion. DO you think it is possible for you to add an Icon for the speakers That is Color Coded for the Degree + - they are placed At for preferred listening, AKA Off Axis, On Axis etc Best would be green, Ok would be Yellow, and well of Course Red would be Not an Option or, Why would you??? Cheers
i bet these are very comparable to ascend acoustics' sierra 1 speakers....cept they are made of bamboo (which seems great / sustainable) so maybe less resonance issue. maybe i will send you mine to review one day if interested :)
I haven't watched through yet but is this going to be yet another Dynaudio speaker with a sensitivity of, like, eleven dB? What's a person supposed to do with all those rave reviews out there of speakers that will cost three times as much money to drive, as they did to buy -- and why isn't anyone producing a seventeen-minute, rage-screaming rant about it?
Bass volume means NOTHING...it's the tightness and speed. Just got a pair of Triangle Borea BR02 for small room (10x12) listening. I dare anyone to compare the build quality, bindings, grille and chestnut finish of the BR02...all for $200. Also I'm streaming Flac/mp3 to vintage Pioneer SX-550 receiver via BT5.0 dac.
Triangle, like other French companies, famously uses "pure" paper for their cones, I simply don't find them satisfying on the bass department. Dynos also offer tight low extension bass, without that Triangle/any other front-ported speakers mid-bass bump that I don't care for. Also a much superior tweeter - and I have midrange speakers from them, not the SP 40. But yeah, they're overpriced, so I bought an used pair.@@tigerbalm666
Great job from another long-time Dynaudio fan. BTW, have you seen the GR Research tweetergate controversy happening on Danny's channel? Looks like he screwed up big time. Would be great to see your analysis of that Seas T25 driver used in the Jamo Concert series.
Dynaudio Emit 20 are almost the worst loudspeakers I have ever had. Rumbling bass, subdued high tones, chaos on stage and very strange behavior when playing some instruments - it was as if each tone of the same instrument was coming from a different place scattered in space. The quality of the black version casing is below criticism. The overall impression is a cheap, Chinese junk product.
Yeah, if you can't properly control that Dynaudio famous bass you need to turn to other options because it will ruin the whole experience. A very good amp is also needed, all Dynos eat a lot of power, regardless of the price point. Anyway, distance to the back wall is crucial - at least 50 cm.
@@cezarjipa72 At that time I had a quite nice Arcam A29 amplifier. 165W per channel, damping factor 58. There should be no problems. The loudspeakers were moved away from the wall behind them by at least 65 cm (90 cm from the side walls). It played poorly, and the plugs completely turned off the low bass. Dynaudio is simply not a particularly good brand. If even cheap Opera, Dali, Focal, Wharfedale, Tonsil could play with the same amplifier, in the same room and it was fine, it means that it was not the fault of the amplifier or the room.
Unfortunately, I don't like metal drivers anymore, paper has no bass, and some other issues, fiber glass/Kevlar have a colored sound, so, what's the alternative to than PP ? @@r423fplip
You must have got a bad batch. Dynaudio states: ''The entire Emit family has been put through its paces in our world-class Jupiter measuring facility at Dynaudio Labs. We treat it exactly the same as we do every other speaker in our range: no stone left unturned.'' So obviously if you are seeing resonances at 600hz you must have got yourself a bad speaker. Contact Dynaudio and ask for a replacement
Yeah… you definitely have not seen my other reviews nor the comment that the Dynaudio rep left in response to the non-linearity. Aside from the fact they don’t make their speakers to have a flat on-axis response, the same resonance shows up in some measurements performed by others.
@@ErinsAudioCorner But Dynaudio obviously measure their speakers in their Jupiter measuring facility and they didn't see it. So there's a discrepancy here which needs to be resolved.
@@ProfessorJohnSmith how do you know that they did not see it? Here is a Czech review from January 2022 that shows the same resonance. www.hifi-voice.com/testy-a-recenze/reprosoustavy-regalove/3615-dynaudio-emit-20#

Another great review. Thank you!!
Glad you liked it!
Good detective work on the mid-bass driver resonance.
Hi, no, I’m not aware. I typically don’t have time to watch anyone else’s reviews.
But... as long as you get low distortion, good directivity - eq should do.the job and you can enjoy really good sound out of cheap speakers.
please, tell me. what do you mean with dynamics? thanks
@@jdm724 well... peceived difference between loudest sound on the track and most quiet one is low. This is what i mean by that. And crossing them at 80Hz does not help
thanks!! shitty for HT
I think the Elac Unifi UB5 and UB52 have about the same bass extension down to 40-45 Hz but none of the other issues to that degree.
When will you design a loudspeaker? Should be a good one with your knowledge….
Could you please test Dynaudios Evoke series speakers!
Excellent and insightful analysis of the resonance thanks Erin. Brilliant 👌
Glad it was helpful!
Great review. Now the evoke 20s please!!!!
Thank you Erin,, 👍🌟👍
hey Erin you should do a little tour of your setups and what gear and room you use for the subjective part of your reviews
I have a tour of my Home theater from my old house that you might find interesting.
already seen that ^^
So basically you use the same amps and whatnot ?

Better bass would be my guess. I actually don't like either without a little EQ, but it doesn't mean they're bad speakers....
I used to lust after Dynaudio drive units.
If you used a high-speed camera, do you think you would be able to see out-of-phase motion between the cone and surround?
Possibly. That could be the case, but my gut doesn’t lean toward that as being the issue.
how you detached the woofer? there's no screws on the woofer
What about after burn in? I had the Emit M10’s before I just ordered these and remember they changed so much over time. At least to my laypersons ear.
Really good analysis ..As always ..bit different, class apart ..Thanks 👍
This new Emit 20 is GREAT DISSAPOINTMENT to me. I could not believe Dynaudio use Chinese woofer made of stamped steel! And the marketing spin with the Cerotar tweeter which is crossed at 3800Hz?!
Another great review!
I appreciate that.
An other great review, thank you! The vertical directivity is so bad in this speaker! That’s why I like concentric drivers!
I see a lot of speakers with that 4k bump and I swear it makes some content physically painful. Don't get it.
A "4K bump"???? I think I had one of those on my forehead when I was a TEEN! :P
A bit disappointed in a speaker at that cost ($1700 here in Aust) that is using a stamped steel basket & a basic crossover with quality questionable parts.
A better designed crossover could have easily smoothed out the top end. While the 700hz resonance is in the design of that mid woofer.
Will you test Emit 10 also? 😊
Possibly but not anytime soon.
Audio monitor bronze 100 at 20m2 vs daudio emit 20 which has more bass and is it soft, like the midrange withdrawn or like in ma b100
I just saw that Nubert currently has an 11% discount. So, the costs are comparable to the Dali Oberon 3 series. Does anyone know if the Dali Oberon 3 series performs well compared to the Nuboxx B40 series?
Ive had them. Best speaker around 500 dollar
I bought a Schiit Loki 4-band eq to boost the midrange. The speaker sings now.
and THAT'S what eq's are for.
i want a bookshelf that can sound great for movies and music that looks modern but not expensive with good solid mid bass and warm highs
HECO Celan Revolution 3 ?
@@luxpiotr i def consider them but their not available any more
Great review, thanks
Always Like Watching your Reviews, very informative... Just like to make a suggestion. DO you think it is possible for you to add an Icon for the speakers That is Color Coded for the Degree + - they are placed At for preferred listening, AKA Off Axis, On Axis etc Best would be green, Ok would be Yellow, and well of Course Red would be Not an Option or, Why would you??? Cheers
Is it comparable to SP40 in any way?
i bet these are very comparable to ascend acoustics' sierra 1 speakers....cept they are made of bamboo (which seems great / sustainable) so maybe less resonance issue. maybe i will send you mine to review one day if interested :)
Can confirm Jeezy - “Put On” is the perfect song for checking sub bass. 😎
😂😎
Maybe I’m mistaken, but did you have a review for the Avantone Pro Gauss 7 studio monitors or end up taking it down or something ?
@@medeuce nope. Not me. I’ve never even had those speakers in my possession or any other from that brand.
@@ErinsAudioCorner got ya. I hope they end up in your corner soon 🤞🏽
Also claim 40hz
Hope Dynaudio fixes woofer resonance, seems like it would be much better.
Would like to see review of dali oberon 1, 3 & 5, like your honest reviews..
If you would like to reach out to the manufacturer on my behalf, to see if they would be willing to loan me any to review that I would be happy to.
That vertical polar has to be one of the worst I've seen.
Compare these with the original Emit 20’s would be interesting…
This channel deserves a lot more subscribers and views (a bit like mine) but who wants to hear accurate, valuable and rare information ;)
We don't watch graph while enjoying music , are we. ?
Wow ! They are $1,049 now ! Huge price increase.

Me, too.
again with soft slope dynaudio, crossover is to high at 3.8khz for a 7" woofer
Bass volume means NOTHING...it's the tightness and speed. Just got a pair of Triangle Borea BR02 for small room (10x12) listening. I dare anyone to compare the build quality, bindings, grille and chestnut finish of the BR02...all for $200. Also I'm streaming Flac/mp3 to vintage Pioneer SX-550 receiver via BT5.0 dac.
Still, quite inferior sound vs. the Emitts - unless one prefers cheap paper drivers to PP cones sound, that is.
I has drivers made of rice paper...
But yeah, they're overpriced, so I bought an used pair.@@tigerbalm666
good
Great job from another long-time Dynaudio fan.
BTW, have you seen the GR Research tweetergate controversy happening on Danny's channel? Looks like he screwed up big time. Would be great to see your analysis of that Seas T25 driver used in the Jamo Concert series.
what happened?
Yeah, what happened?
Oh that's total BS..................LOL you don't need all that testing. End the end all that matters if it sounds good to you.
Yeah its like buying a 1000 dollar car and testing it for being the best car possible. Ofc its not, this is budget stuff
I've never seen speakers with a butt plugs
Alternative title: "Great speaker for Wiim streamer owners" (has PEQ built in)
Dynaudio Emit 20 are almost the worst loudspeakers I have ever had.
@@cezarjipa72 just don't buy Dynaudio speakers. Way overpriced for performance.
We treat it exactly the same as we do every other speaker in our range: no stone left unturned.''
So obviously if you are seeing resonances at 600hz you must have got yourself a bad speaker.
Thats called marketing. You cant make a speaker that cheap and not expect some quirks.
@@scanspeak00 It's a question of trust. Who do we trust? Do we trust the DIY enthusiasts like Erin and others, or do we trust Dynaudio with their state of the art million dollar Jupiter measuring facility? Who's measurements are correct? They can't both be right.
