I was using a brace. As a 30 year drummer learning guitar it was really causing me some issues. The brace I mount most comfortable is more os a compression support it’s the 3M futura performance comfort support. Strap it where the pressure is focused in the smallest area between your hand and wrist that area really responds to the compression well because you might have a slight bit or carpal tunnel. But one day I started standing up only doing
My lessons and focusing on keeping my elbow at my side and it has sort of instantly changed my posture to a more correct position. Another thing I noticed was I had a subconscious tendency to slide the body of my guitar way to the right side of my beer belly and that was causing a lot of the posture issues as well. Especially sitting in an office chair. Forcing myself to play standing up was a game changer

Haha nice man, just subbed and good to hear you talk about injuries. I’m a PT and after my finger started killing me (should have listened to myself when it originally started a few weeks prior) I took a few days off. The stopped bending, and only played for 10 minutes every other day, then started a few bends a day, so on. Glad I found the bend video to prevent another injury. The key is, you can just quit for months, everyone has a dosage they can dose themselves by playing for very little times per week. Pain is your guide!

Good tips (I'm a PT). Regarding tennis elbow aka tendinopathy of the common extensor tendon, it can develop from activities involving gripping like biking, using a grabber tool or tennis. Tennis is a big one due to using the hand and finger extensors to decelerate the racquet after ball contact. It is not a commonly known fact that power gripping involves the wrist and finger extensors just as much as the flexors which is why the finger band exercise can be effective. Tennis elbow can be problematic for the left hand in guitar players too and very gradual progression of extensor tendon loading like the ones you demonstrated as well as griping exercises is beneficial.

Visiting as I have shoulder pain and thumb pain after learning barre chords. This is a brilliant in depth video that delves much deeper with great comprehensive advice. Thank you . On the matter of the gyro ball you highlighted, do you happen to have a link for the one you purchased? I have taken a look, but there are just so many to choose from with some even mentioning they are pull cord activated. Thanks

      1.
If you're facing pain in other areas or at all, progressive relaxation is an extremely helpful tool. I have a guided progressive relaxation for guitar here:

      2.
It really doesn't matter which exact gyroball you get. They're all the same thing from China. Just search Gyroball on Amazon and pick one that has a lot of reviews. If you see any item with more than like 500 reviews, well... That means it's sold a lot so there's a high likely hood it's good.

iv had mild pain in my right wrist, which has gotten progressively worse over several months. should i completely stop practicing for a week or so? iv tried braces and painkillers with very little fiddling on the guitar and have noticed that when i play, even when im careful with the technique, it hurts more the next day. lately my left wrist has also started hurting a bit. this is a bit demotivating and i feel hopeless about having to wait another week to start practicing again :" should i just keep pushing through the pain?

      1. Yes, a complete break is a very good idea in the first phase of the healing process.
      2. Watch my left hand masterclass video for tips on left hand.
If the pain is getting worse, while you're also lessening work on guitar, I'd look for lifestyle factors (poor workplace ergonomics) that may be affecting your wrists.
Highly recommend chiro to MANUALLY adjust wrists when first getting back on track. The guns that chiros use are OKAY. They're not a bad tool, but for the wrist specifically, manual adjustment is essential IMO.
      Stick in there!

Hey dude, great video, it really resonated with me. Been suffering 2 months + with some sort of tendonitis from hell on both arms/wrists/hands. I am unable to download the diet PDF, do you by chance have another link?

You're very welcome. You can heal. I believe in you! 🙂
I'd recommend watching my "How to Hold a Guitar Pick" video as well the "Left Hand Masterclass" videos to fully address any potential ergonomic issues that may be present.
The link still works for me! Even in an incognito window...
Can you tell me more about the issue you're having so I can fix it at the root cause? A few people have been having issues with my links unfortunately. ☹

To get started, don't overcomplicate it.
      1. Memorize the passage you need to work on
      2. Play WITHOUT a metronome until you can play it through with good accuracy at a low speed

tysm for the tips! leaving this here so i can come back to it later.
    ☆ for wrist pain
    1. rest
    2. ice, painkillers braces (more muscles atrophy)
    3. look for any obvious technique issue
    4. change posture, different positions
    addressing the left hand:
    5. the finger, not the whole hand, should move
    6. make sure ur action is set up properly
    7. complete rest period
    ☆ strengthening methods:
    1. gyroball
    2. exercise band 7:51
    3. see a chiropracter or message therapist, use a message gun
    4. reverse stretching 11:00
    5. stretching 12:30
    6. all of our bodies have a unique response to wrist pain
    ☆ things to avoid:
    1. grip strengthening tool
    2. psychology of the words u use: instead of "i have x, im fighting y", say "i have wrist pain tdy"^^
    3. pankillers unless necessary, can be toxic for liver

    • @mattwright466
      @mattwright466  2 месяца назад

      I'd edit to:
LIMIT painkillers. They're a great tool. Just don't become dependent on them.
Exercise band is the alternate to the Gyroball. Gyroball is all you really need.
If you use a massage gun, only use it on the belly of the muscle, NEVER ON TENDONS.
