The Venus Flytrap Genome: Why It’s So Complicated

  • The Venus flytrap or Dionaea muscipula is part of the droseraceae family. It has raised attention that crossing 2 cultivars of Venus flytrap almost never results in the same offspring plants than parental plants. Here, we explore different possibilities on why this phenomenon happens at the genome point of view. Presented by Alexandre PONS.

    I won’t pretend that I understood most of this but I did learn some things that will better help me understand what to expect in my VFT, African Violet, and rabbit breeding projects. Thank you for posting this discussion!

    I have used the sawtooth (such as Dracula) and all red VFT (such as Maroon Monster) as parents for years and have produced many offspring that resemble the parent

      Yes, indeed some traits are dominant. But not all of them ;)
      Red sure is dominant in some way, but for the others I don't know. One would have to rigorously cross 2 cultivars, and do some statistical tests on it !
