You discussed being trapped by identifying with “something that happened to me or that someone did to me” but what if you are trapped by something that YOU did- the actions I chose and I did that I regret. How can you NOT identify with your own actions, mistakes, bad decisions?
Great question! I may need to make a video to answer this one thoroughly, because it's more than I can put in a RUclips comment.
First of all, the you that did that is the ego program, not the real You (the Awareness and Presence who is watching). Please see my video on How to Overcome Regret to see that the ego is arbitrary.
We need to keep coming back to identifying with the true Self over the ego program, but even if you think it is still you, you change and are new and fresh in each moment.
The cells in your body are all different than 7 years ago, the emotions and thoughts are always coming and going...so who is the you that retains identify? It must be changeless and have duration to have identity. Otherwise it's just a process, like the ego program. So who are You? See my videos on Self-Realization.
Now, this is not to say we should not take responsibility for our actions, lack integrity or continue doing something hurtful. It just means that we are allowed to heal, forgive ourselves for our ignorance at the time (the cause of suffering) in not knowing who we really are in order for the actions to come from there. In doing so, our actions come from a more pure place and it corrects the underlying issue of actions we regret coming from ego.

The ultimate method for transcending identification was taught by Buddha. He was a true investigator and reporter of the process. Just be still and direct your attention away from all thought. The breath is probably the most common object to which one can direct one's attention, but somatic experiences in the body are an option, too and might be more "entertaining". Regardless, one pitfall, and it's a big one, is creating a story about dis-identifying with another story. A story is a story is a story..
Thank you 🙏🏼 Buddha also taught Vipassana as his direct experiential method, which includes somatic awareness with equanimity.
Disidentification by itself is great for Self-Realization whereas Vipassana and Somatic Experiencing are great for emotional integration or what my teacher calls liberation work. Both are needed to avoid bypassing and this channel tries to reference both 🙏🏼
