  • Back in 2018 I did a repotting a bromeliad episode, featuring a number of bromeliads in my collection-one of which was this Quesnelia marmorata 'Tim Plowman'. Well, after three years, it's time to survey the roots and repot it again!
    This episode is brought to us by our partner-sponsors, Espoma Organic. You can find their products at www.espoma.com.

    Living in Australia I use Casurina needles (leaves) while making up Neoregelia potting mix. I collect them along the river and the bromeliads grow really well without fertiliser. I like watching your videos Summer.

    I love BROMELIAD, I have the one is called tears of queen and I have around 150 of this, I love it!!’ Excellent videeo! The way in which bromeliads work is that the mother plant grows into adulthood and blooms and when the flower dies, a baby plant begins to grow there, which is recommended to remove it from the mother plant when it is at least 8 inches long. and in the end the mother plant ends up dying.

    If you fill the leaves when you water them every few weeks or so, it'll help them grow better. We plant them a little further down in the sand.

    This was super helpful. It also made me aware that I should wait for the mother plant to go before I separate my urn plant pups.
    My urn plant is so low maintenance!! Thrives with barely any humidity and has given me 2 big pups.

    Absolutely loved watching this, I also adore finding new uses for old pots. The guzmania I've had for about 16 months has two beautiful big pups now, it's still alive so should I leave them attached to the Mom until she dies completely? Or can I take them off earlier? I'm not really in a rush though the plant does take up a lot of space given it's structure. Thank you!

    Enjoyed repotting "with you" ! I noticed you didn't water/fert into the vase of the bromeliaed, is it necessary or is that a species specific thing?

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  2 года назад +7

      I don't water/fertilize the inside of bromeliads indoors. Just not enough of that airflow and ecosystem interactions to warrant it. From speaking with bromeliad growers in Florida, they recommended to me not to water the vases.

    So what will be your winter watering schedule for this Bromeliad?

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  2 года назад +1

      I guess it depends where she winds up in the house. Right now she is closer to a south-facing window, so may need to water her more frequently. When she was in my NE-facing window, I got away with a watering schedule every week or every other week.

  • @salrial744
    @salrial744 2 года назад

    You probably already know about this, but I've used baking soda and fresh lemon juice (successfully to get rid of rust stains on less porous surfaces. I wonder if that would work on the pot.

    • @summerrayneoakes
      @summerrayneoakes  2 года назад

      Thanks! I used a vinegar solution and later soap and scrubber. No dice. May try baking soda and an acid next time around.

    when I use orchid bark I get a layer of white fuzzy mold or fungus grow on the top of the pot - after I repot it happens after the first watering... I use promix and know their soil has mycorrhizae fungi, wondering if they add it to their orchid bark as well and if anyone else experiences this problem? Is this a watering issue?

    • @STRcircaFKR
      @STRcircaFKR 2 года назад

      I think it will happen with any bark. It is just so porous and prone to decomposition

    Bromeliads put out a pup after flowering & the the mother slowly dies. That’s the cycle of a bromeliad.
