  • Bromeliads are striking plants for the home, and though many varieties are sold at the height of their maturity (meaning, while they are in bloom), they can exist and survive for years afterwards. Bromeliads, like the related Tillandsia (or air plants), actually begin to produce pups, or offsets, at their bases after they finish blooming. Once that happens, you have the option of removing the pups or removing the "mother" plant. This video covers that process! #sponsored

You posted this three days before I have to attempt this myself (I'm moving across town and have to remove some from a pot where they've been growing for years)-- THANK YOU! Couldn't have been more perfect timing!

Hi there, just subscribed😃👍 Thank you for the video. I've had an Aechmea Fasciata for over 4 years and, no joke, it is the absolute oddest bromeliad in my garden. She does not die, will lose a leaf every now and then and has yet to give me any pups. Not a one, ever. She has, however, given me 3 blooms in her lifetime. 🤯Have you (or anyone else??) had this experience. (...gosh darn, hope I haven't jinxed her now) 🙂.

I have a Aechmea Fachiata with tons of grows on it, and was looking at multiple videos how to separate the mother and the pups and how to plants them etc. This is the best video I seen so far. First video that told me to wear gloves because of the spikes. I knew, because they do hurt me, but not everybody else does. Some people do not wear any gloves. Great video. Thanks

Just got back from my vacation and on the way home I was already excited about a new "plant one on me" :) I've got an idea for a new episode...how to create an urban jungle on a budget! It can get so costly to buy many plants and pots and I can think of a few things (propagating, plant swapping, finding plants on sale or plants from the "I need some extra care" section, thrifting pots) but I'm sure you have a ton of original ideas to keep the costs down that I would love to hear

Another benefit to this is it requires way less manpower. Takes longer to wait out, but far easier way of doing it. Also I'm going to try and plant a pineapple now, thanks for the tip!

Here a b-side question about the humidity absorption quality: are bromeliads and other plants that have high humidity requirements good helpers for absorbing humidity excess in certain rooms? Let's say bromeliads, tillandsias maybe, philodendrons, calatheas, prayers... - Thank you big time!

Wish I had seen this a few months ago. I have an Achmea Blue Rain and I repotted two pups. Watching this, I probably should have left it longer. They seem to be doing ok, would love them to flower again. I read somewhere that you can cover it with a plastic bag with a banana and this helps them flower. Haven't tried it yet though.

There is content from a guy that propagated his Bromeliad. It looks as though he has had some success in doing so. He kept the mother plant and got 3 more pups from her. As this is such a long process to flower I am wondering how viable the 2nd set of pups will be.
I think that the more "natural" way of keeping everything intact until the mother is completely spent may be the way to go. So that is what I am going to do with the one that I have rescued from the compost bin.

My bromeliad is a purple one with an arrow shaped cluster in the middle. Not sure of the specie. I may have been told wrong. Lowe's said to transplant it, use half & half orchid and citrus soil mix. Leave the original bark around the roots. Don't break it apart. Put into a larger pot, then add the new mix up to the original level. Mainly just water in the cup. Don't get it too wet. They had like 3 plants out of 9 that were still alive on a clearance shelf. Poor plants inside the store with just store lighting. It's looking good, but does it actually need dirt? Everyone on here has their soil beliefs. I was making sure my mix is correct.

Hi! I have a bromeliad who has been giving off babies like no other. I have sadly failed at one and have two more babies growing. They are in their own pots. A couple of questions: 1. what size pot is best? I have both in a 6 in" pot. 2. What should the soil level be? The mother is in a smaller pot but the soil goes up to the bottom leaves. 3. Do bromeliads grow tall then out? If so, does the soil need to surround their stems? 4. What kind of soil? I am using soil meant for cacti and succulents I believe. I was instructed to use that. I know I am asking a lot, I just want to make sure I re-potting and growing these beautiful plants correctly!

Regarding the watering at the end: shouldn't it drain out? Do you just give them a quick sip and let it stay if it collects in the tray? Great information, again.

So do you still recommend growing the pups with the mom when there are 4 pups? Or should I be transplanting these?
