Welcome back to SUBI, your trusted channel for insightful discussions on African culture, life, and diaspora experiences. Today, we delve into a crucial and often underreported topic: the realities faced by African maids working in the Middle East. We have the honor of interviewing Najjemba Rebecca, a Ugandan author and former migrant worker, who shares her gripping story and invaluable insights as captured in her book, "760 Days In Saudi Arabia - A Journey Through The Life Of A Migrant Worker."
    🌍 Exploring the Realities:
In this candid interview, Najjemba Rebecca walks us through the highs and lows of being an African maid in countries like Saudi Arabia and Dubai. This is a journey many women undertake in search of better economic opportunities, but it is often fraught with significant challenges. From facing exploitation to finding new beginnings, Najjemba’s story is a testament to the resilience and strength of these women.

    📚 Najjemba Rebecca’s Story:
Najjemba’s book provides a detailed account of her two-year experience working in Saudi Arabia. She shares the hardships she faced, including long working hours, minimal rest, and the constant fear of mistreatment. Despite these challenges, Najjemba’s resilience saw her through, and she now uses her experiences to educate and prepare other women for similar journeys.
    💡 Key Discussion Points:
During our interview, we explore several critical aspects of this issue:
    Pros:
Employment Opportunities: The chance to earn a stable income and support families back home.
Skill Development: Gaining valuable work experience and skills.
Financial Independence: Many women achieve a level of financial independence they might not have had otherwise.
    Cons:
Exploitation: Vulnerability to exploitation by agencies and employers.
Isolation: Cultural and social isolation in a foreign country.
Abuse: Instances of physical and emotional abuse with limited avenues for recourse.
    🔍 Empowering Migrant Workers:
Najjemba is now dedicated to empowering young women who are considering work abroad. She offers practical advice on how to protect themselves from exploitation and make the most of the opportunities available. Here are some of her key tips:
Education: Learn about your rights and the realities of the work before leaving.
Preparation: Be well-prepared for cultural differences and potential challenges.
Support Networks: Establish connections with support groups and networks in the host country.
    🛡️ Combatting Predatory Practices:
We also discuss how to tackle the predatory practices of recruitment agencies. Najjemba suggests several measures:
Stricter Regulations: Enforcing stringent regulations to ensure ethical recruitment practices.
Raising Awareness: Conducting awareness campaigns to inform potential workers about their rights and risks.
Support Systems: Creating robust support systems in both the home and host countries to assist workers in distress.
    📣 Call to Action:
We urge our viewers to support initiatives aimed at protecting and empowering migrant workers. Whether it’s through advocacy, supporting organizations that help migrant workers, or raising awareness, every action counts.
    📚 Read the Book:
For a deeper understanding of these issues, we highly recommend Najjemba Rebecca’s book, "760 Days In Saudi Arabia." Her firsthand account is both eye-opening and inspiring, highlighting the urgent need for reform in the recruitment and treatment of migrant workers.

Thanks for sharing! I would say, Ugandan Agencies that are taking people abroad, specifically (Saudi Arabia) should be regulated by the government with full accountability which involves track record of expatriates.
Pls, note!! regulations don't only stop at issuing license and getting revenue collection only but more work is needed diplomatically whether the government of Saudi is interested with the workers so that monitoring can be easy. I'm sure if everything is discussed diplomatically no killing no other criminal acts can happen to the workers as it's the case with Philippines.
Otherwise, if it remain private 'worse' will be the 'worst' and it's true once Agencies get their money to hell with you I guess they don't follow up!!
