There was one tidbit of info that I wasn't aware of (or didn't remember) ... even though I had done quite a bit of research. Guess I just overlooked it. That is a difference in HD availability. Just another check mark as to why I prefer Dish over Direct TV. Have experienced both home versions. :)
Jody took me to school on this one. I knew basically nothing about RV Satellite systems prior to speaking with him. Everybody can always learn something from someone else.
newbie here and you helped me greatly - went the hot spot this season at a camp site - permenent set and your videos like this one help a lot of us i called dish today
The Mrs and I love your videos, Josh! We are from Flint and there are several RV dealers that are very close by. We have made the decision to go to Haylett RV to purchase our first camper/travel trailer/popup. We even have a relative who owns an RV store and yet still made the decision to come to you guys to get our first RV. So hopefully at the end of this month, the weather will not be bone-chilling again. Keep up the great work Josh and the rest of the team at Haylett RV!!
This video is about a year too late for us. lol. We installed a Dish on the top of our Apex 275BHSS a year ago. We had a LOT of fun (insert sarcasm) pulling off the craptastic antenna that came with it and using that hole to route the coax into the RV... and getting into the entertainment center to run the new coax. Lordy, the builders used a LOT of zip ties to tie down the coax. That was fun. But, we managed it and we're very happy about having the dish, we always have TV now, always! Oh and we've never needed to enter the zip code, just the state we are in, easy peasy.
Another thing to mention is that dish network uses two satellite arcs. If a customer is a full timer and going to be going coast to coast they need the dish that can pick up both arcs (which is more expensive). But, if they are just seasonal and stick to one coast they can get away with a cheaper satellite that just does one of the coast. Directv doesn’t have that issue.
I am not sure if this is an old video or not but. I have Direct TV Service. I had 3 TVs hooked to a Winegard Dome Satellite in my 2006 travel trailer. The Dealer told me I could hook more than one TV to it but had to watch the same channel on all TVs. Said I couldn't watch different channels at the same time. When they got done doing the install I showed the tech how you can run multiple receivers. Needless to say the tech was amazed. Although it was SD not HD. I then bought my new Fifthwheel and tased them to install a new winegard onto it. Again they told me only one TV so I had them hook up the one TV and I would fix it when I got home. I again changed it to be able to watch 3 TVs on different channels in SD. I then bought 4 new flat panel HD Smart TVs for the RV. I had the winegard Dome Satellite changed out to the Traveler Satellite also by winegard. It is a self finding Satellite dish that locates and tunes itself to the Satellites also but in HD. Now I have hooked up all 4 HD Smart TVs to this dish and have HD TV in 4 areas in my trailer all are able to watch full channel selection at the same time. I have a home account but I do believe they have a prepay account that you can be on. If you are using your home account you can take your hone receivers into the trailer when you want them and then put them back into the house when you get home. Myself I had separate receivers in the RV and when I wasn't using them I would put them on suspension when I was at home. So what ever system you are using Direct or Dish you can have HD Tv in your RV in more than one area in HD or SD with no issues. Feel free to contact me for more info if you would like to have the details on how this it so you could make a new video with this new information. Great Videos though keep up the great work.
I have an extra receiver and put my card in the old one, the satellite couldn’t find a connection and I even put my zip code in. Am I doing something wrong? I have tried several times and days and still nothing. I even took my current receiver out and added card to it and same result no connection or couldn’t find.
Many newer travel trailers and fifth wheels don't provide a great place to put your satellite receiver so it would be best to have a receiver that doesn't use a "line of sight" remote control so the receiver can be behind the TV or in a cabinet. Unfortunately, for us Canadians, the 2 satellite TV companies - Bell and Shaw - don't offer such receivers. So the only way to be able to put the receiver somewhere without "line of sight" is to use a IR remote extender or repeater.
Thank you for sharing a Canadian perspective on this. It's obviously something I don't experience on a daily basis, but we have a large number of canadian clients who appreciate the insights.
Josh there is another thing that is important in 2006 in our home we had cable tv and paying $65.00 a month for 55 channels same provider we switched to satellite tv same price per month for over 200 channels in 2001 when we had the cable installed the installer at the time installed coaxial RG 6 cable in the house 5 years later the installer that came to hook up the satellite was surprised to find out that the cable required for the satellite was already ran all he had to do was run 2 cables to the dish after installing it and activating the boxes older RV trailers may not have sufficient enough coaxial cable in them from the interior plug to the exterior input
Regrettably I have dish net work already but I also have a Winegard 360 on my RV. Should I get rid of the Winegard 360 and replace with it with the dish? Planning on one inside tv and one outside.
I have a Winegard stationary system on my RV (Direct TV) and at times on some channels give me an alert that the signal is week and offer to watch in "low resolution". The picture size is reduced a lot and it's not in high def. It's inconsistent on the channels with this issue but is starting to happen more and more. Any ideas on a fix? Thank you, Harlan
My RV was already set up for satellite in my Newmar with DirectV capability. I have an older receiver box from DirectV that I wanted to use… according to the information on The satellite my box should work. But when I tried to find the satellite connection on the tv… the system said it couldn’t find the satellite connection. I even put my zip code in. Am I doing something wrong?
@@JoshtheRVNerd Josh, with satellite, for 2 receivers you have have two lines directly from the dish, possibly using a switch, or you can split the output from the receiver to view the same program to two TVs.
This was my question as well. With two TVs we have two cables coming from the Dish so I would think we need a cable home run to each TV receiver. While the installed factory wire plant may provide coax to all the internal jacks, it only has one connector on the outside to connect the Dish. Can’t believe that I am the only one that wants to be able to watch something different on the TV so I don’t have to watch the crap that my wife watches.. Also would be interested to know how the Cougar new KEYTV would/could handle the above scenario?? Thanks for bringing this up and hope that you have the silver bullet for this situation.

Enj'd the video with you guys. Ques: Does Dish offer diff plans (price points); we don't view a lot of diff channels (cable at home), so don't want to have super "expensive" plan with lots of channels. Thanks much. Y'all Be Safe!
As mentioned in the video I'm not a satellite expert. I would recommend contacting Dish directly on that one. I don't want to try to speak on behalf of another company.
Didn't know you can do month to month which is nice since I don't use satelite services anymore daughter works for cable and get it dirt cheap but you are wrong you can get Directv in HD just have to take a dish with you the ones that automatically find it won't do HD for directv
There's a reason I asked Jody to speak here -- I'm "satellite illiterate." I would recommend contacting either our parts team or simply looking up Dish or Direct more directly. I don't like speaking on behalf of someone else's company
If you RV where there are a lot of Trees ? Like most State Parks usually have . Satellite is nearly worthless . No Southern Sky ? No Sat ...it's that easy .
Depends on if you have a 12v capable TV (which can run on an RV Battery) or a household-only TV. The trick is if you want to run things like satellite, then you need either an inverter or generator.
I have to disagree with some thing your "tech" guy said. 1st, even if you have 2 wally receivers, say one in living room one in bedroom. You can NOT watch both at same time and different programs. EVEN if your satellite has 2 coax plugs. We've tried it, it does NOT work. Same if you only have one Sat plug on that portable. Can't watch 2 different shows, in 2 different locations in the RV. NOT with a portable! You CAN get a roof mounted "DISH" antenna like at home, one that is powered to find signals automatically, THEN you can watch 2 or 3 different shows in different rooms because the roof mount has 3 beam's like you home antenna would so it can capture all 3 satellites at once. Direct TV only uses ONE Satellite, but DISH has 3 in space. Your portable can not hit all 3 at one time and those 3 different space units carry different sets of channels.
I'm not aware of one, but I Asked Jody to speak because I admittedly know little about satellite systems. Considering most satellite systems are still marketed to home consumers I would be surprised if there was a 12v system. Inverter and/or generator likely required. 12v TVs are more common obviously.
I find your videos hard to watch, they are useful. We get it your a nice guy doing us favors and your overly humble about it cool. You don't need to repeat it throughout all of your videos. Not bashing you but damn man, others putting out same or better videos and they don't ramble about the small talk and are easier to listen to. Just some criticism for you.

Dish is the way to go
However if you have Directv at home you can take one, two, or 3 DirecTV receivers and use a DirecTV dish and it works great in the RV.
