  • In this video I talk about the differences between PT and OT in terms of choosing a career. I talk about the biomechanics approach to medicine rather than the holistic approach that includes the physical, social, emotional, cognitive, and spiritual. I also talk about why most people don't know or understand occupational therapy.

I am a PT and i feel like OTs are being sidelined. It’s overwhelming for me as a PT to take up all the responsibilities of a PT and OT as most organizations only employ PTs in rehabilitation departments. I have taken it upon myself to promote OTs in my country as most people don’t even know they exist.

I’m a male OT practicing in South Africa. I’ve worked in paeds, disability claims then moved to neuro. I’m enjoying neuro the most and I don’t think I would’ve changed to PT knowing what I know. We do so much so more in my eyes. Way more intimate than PT.

Hi...i'm a first year PT student. Im really curious about OT because i think they do the same as PTs or actually more. As OTs, do you also treat muskuloskeletal pains and disorders? I really have no idea

    • @otfocus

Yep. We treat the same patients at PTs. We pretty much see all patients admitted to a hospital.

In time people learn to respect you as a person and a professional not about the title. I like OT coz they are amazing and always willing to help.

After a stroke, I was in Palomar Medical Center for a couple of weeks. My OT was horrible to me ... very abusive. I would have loved to have you there instead. You seem terrific.

I am an OT student second year of university and I sometimes worry that with Physios upskilling so much they could make our profession almost redundant. 😣

That’s very true. I think that’s why OTs need to start doing more outpatient and sports medicine.

yes they do. and they actively exclude OTs from joining certain physical manipulation methods and at the same time take on cognitive rehab such as BrainGym. OTs should move quickly into the ergonomic and functional space to preserve their roles. They know nothing about respect and will bully anyone that doesn't fight back.

I'm a 3rd year PT student and PT has always been focused on function as well. We also focus on Patients on a holistic way, an OT cannot do the job of a PT otherwise why then does it exist. I don't understand why it's always a thing of comparing courses. You can still promote your course without comparing it to others. For a graduate OT, I expect better than this not to increase the already present tension.

I made this video after years of working at multiple hospitals that didn't recognize occupational therapy. Doctors wouldn't order us because they thought PT was more important. Also, most of the leadership, responsibilities, and other practice areas were only assigned to physical therapists. OT has been thrown under the bus for years. I'm just trying to show that there's not a huge distinction between the two. It seems like the only people who understand us are the physical therapists who are working right beside us.

@@otfocus And you can still recognize OT without saying it is better than PT. You most certainly don't have to say that you can do my job because let's be honest, you can't.

@@otfocus sure you've worked for many years but still, you're a professional and I believe it’s essential for all of us in the healthcare field to support and respect each other’s specialties, as we all aim to provide the best care for our patients. I would appreciate it if we could ensure our discussions about each other's disciplines are respectful and based on professional standards

It OTs keep going along their careers as airheads by the "quality of life blah blah " you will suffer the consequences because most QoL comes from better physical functioning. If you dont have a concrete skillset to sell in this digital age you are done.

Very true. We have to do more than just help people put socks on and brush teeth. We need an overhaul.

@@otfocus And you need to stop downgrading PTs. You cannot do our jobs just like we can't do yours. First read through the scope of practices for each course thoroughly, get your facts straight, stop being biased then you can make such a video. We don't only stretch and strengthen, we do Cardioresp Physio which is something OTs don't practice so please before misguiding people get your facts straight first
