  • The team takes 10-ish minutes to chat hunting rifle slings - traditional, modern, and pack-integrated systems. A sling can be one of the best additions to any big game rifle setup. Slings keep your hands free when navigating difficult terrain, hold the rifle to your back while riding a bike on logging road systems, keep your barrel pointed in a safe direction around others, provide stability for offhand shots and more. If you can’t tell, we sling their praises.

I would like to hear a 10 min talk on hunting side arms and their carry methods; belt holster, hunting pack, chest rig like a bino harness with a pocket. Lots of options out there these days.

Here are my two cents. If on a driven hunt 100% can do without. If out on a stalk the sling is irreplaceable.

17 minutes of conversation and not a single sling ever shown. Every single one discussed is a carry strap. How about an actual shooting aid like the Rhodesian or Ching or the RifleMann from Galco? Those have a loop to provide support and still useful for carrying the rifle.

Seems to me that this video skips the question of whether a sling is an accessory or necessity

USGI sling all day. Not just for carrying the rifle, but also a marksmanship tool.

Please bring the PRS folks in to show what slings should be. A shooting sling can be a great carry strap, but an excellent carry strap is a crappy shooting sling

OK... MARK...Super SIMPLE no brainer obvious but not OBVIOUS solution to the rifle sitting so far forward... adjust your rifle butt keeper length. flip the rifle over so that the scope isn't keeping the rifle from sitting more verticle. So scope down and the foregrio is up in your arm pit... SMALL changes make big differences... I have carried hundreds of miles like this. i also installed a quick clip and paracord for around the barrel.

If the flag keeps falling out, just remove the bolt while demonstrating like this.

Love my butler creek slings, the comfort is unmatched from everything else I’ve tried. Also really like the Uncle Mikes QD swivels as well, really a great product if you aren’t on a backcountry hunt

I got the Montana Sling for my 30-30 this year. Very easy to adjust and different ways to carry. Plan on getting more for my other rifles.

I have a V-TAC hunting sling on my primary rifle. A lot of V-TAC's tactical sling ideas went into the hunting sling. I should have picked up a few more when I bought this one.

I really like the Ultimate Rife Sling it's simply awesome and fully adjustable for many carrying and shooting positions check out their video. Also, it steadies the rifle for offhand shooting, it actually pushes the rifle back into your shoulder and is rock solid.

I use the Galco Riflemann sling. There's an adjustable loop on the fore end of the sling to put your arm/elbow through for off hand shooting, or you can just run your arm through and wrap like Mark did. The adjustable strap also works for a way to run your strong arm through the sling, bring the butt to your shoulder, tighten the strap, and the gun will lock to your shoulder and you're actually able to shoot without your weak hand even touching the rifle it's so secure. Very well padded as well. There's a video explaining how to set up and use the sling.

Personally I carry with my rifle in a scabbard mounted to my pack because when I'm hiking I want that rifle out my way and I use a 2 point sling normally used with AR15's that has QD cups that attach to my stock... So when I'm making a final stalk my pack might get dropped and my rifle is slung in front of me but I can still have my pack on without getting in the way of my rifle and it's much faster to get that rifle up for a shot when it's slung in front of me. It also feels much more secure then the rifle slings that go over your shoulder like the more traditional hunting slings. Great video as always keepem coming guys!!!

I started using an Outdoor Connection paracord sling and I’m very happy with it. The upper part is woven paracord and the bottom is adjustable nylon strap material. If I was ever in the woods and needed paracord I could cannibalize it for the paracord. I have a narrow nylon sling that came on a used rifle that I don’t like, but it doesn’t weigh much, so I put it in my hunting pack as a backup in the even I needed to use that paracord sling. The Outdoor Connection one has some stretch/bounce in it as well and stays put on the shoulder, either on my jacket or backpack straps. They’re like $20-25, so very affordable.

I've always found it curious how actual "shooting slings" seem to never enter the conversation; just pure "carry slings"? I also find it curious that when I see people practice with their hunting rifles, they never get off the bench/supported rest to practice any of the three common field positions such as standing, sitting/kneeling, nor prone with out a rest, but just the use of a "shooting" sling.
