CSX North & South End Sub Railfanning With AC44CW, CM40-8 & UP Leaders 8/20/2021

On Friday August the 20th a couple friends and myself decided to take a trip to explore some of the North End Sub between Rocky Mount and the NC-VA stateline. Starting out in South Rocky Mount we see W097 head south with an CW44AH leading a loaded rock train, and Amtrak P092 the northbound Silver Star. Working northward we arrived at Garysburg and after a brief wiat caught CSX F768 the Boykins Local on the Portsmouth Sub with a CM40-8 and an ES40DC. We headed back into Weldon and managed to catch Amtrak P089 the Palmetto running across the former Atlantic Coast Line trestle in the middle of town. Moving north again for Pleasant Hill we heard a southbound coal train. We were able to intercept T315 at the Weldon Connection with an ES44AC and a YN2 painted CW44AC up front and an ET44AH as the mid-train DPU. Arriving at Pleasant Hill we waited for Amtrak P079 the Carolinian for a shot at the Virginia Welcome sign. After catching 79 we decided to move South back to Selma stopping along the way to catch any Northbounds. The first train we caught was Amtrak P090 the Northbound Palmetto at the Weldon trestle. Next we stopped in Enfield for Q300 with a pair of ES40DC’s hualing the usual cuts of loaded Tropicana reefers and empty trash cars. After a brief wait CSX Q031 went south with an ET44AH on the point, and an ES44AH as a DPU. Arriving in Selma we arrived in time for Amtrak Silver Star and the Flagship; the Auto Train. NS also provided some action with P01’s crew moving NS 65D across the diamond with a pair of UP ES44AC’s. They tied the train down at Powhatan and then taxied back to the yard to pick up their train with a lone NS ET44AC.
